  • This is the Icom IC-A20 hand-held NAV/COM airband radio, covering 108MHz to 139.975 MHz. To my opinion, the Icom IC-A20 airband radio is the nicest one Icom ever came out with. Very rugged, excellent modulation and receiver, and lots of features.

    A great unit. I have one hidden away in a closet. We used to do a lot of light aircraft travel. It was invaluable as a backup - the 5w made it quite usable for local traffic requirements. I played with the Nav function a few times, but GPS made all that redundant. Thanks for sharing the story!

    Great transceiver Sir a real treasure, I used to have a 02N but sold it to a friend who needed it but he sold it to someone else, I have always regretted it ever since.

    Hi, I have been using my ICOM IC-A22 for so many years now and that I am very happy with the unit. While I already need to replace its original battery pack (CM-166), instead of buying an original pack, I was told its cheaper to replace the 10 pieces - 2/3A batteries inside the pack, probably even using a higher mAh than the original 600mAh. That way, I could use the radio much - much longer. Is this something you can recommend? Will this not damage the radio? Your thoughts / opinion on the matter will be appreciated. Thanks & regards!

    One advantage of this over a regular scanner is that it has the VOR function. It is also handy to have for certain kinds of emergencies. He does transmit (illegally) in this video for a very quick test, although he does make an effort to use an unused frequency. When he transmits on the IC-A20, it is legal because it is into a dummy load and he is only receiving the leakage on the other radio. However when he tests the receiver on the A20 by transmitting on the other radio, it looks like he did it over the air.

      *"One advantage of this over a regular scanner is that it has the VOR function. It is also handy to have for certain kinds of emergencies."*
      Exactly. In the mid 80s I was once saved by a portable NAV/COM when everything electric went dark in a PA-28-180 Archer, in IMC conditions above mountains. I just happened to have on-board such a portable radio that I was interested in purchasing - which pretty much saved the day. The controller initially asked me to fly toward a VOR station, then vectored me down through the clouds to a VFR-open airport. I purchased the IC-A20 that same week and never, ever flew without it since. Not that I ever needed to use it again in an emergency (never happened again), but it's without doubt an added layer of safety.
      As for that Archer: it was fixed by mechanics, flew another few months and then was destroyed by a short-circuit fire on the ground, just seconds after the pilot exited the runway after landing.

    Nice review Sir, I have an ICOM IC A21 which looks almost identical to yours.
    I have used it just a handful of times back in the 90s now I am thinking of selling it.
    The external leather-ish case got too old to keep, but the radio itself is without a single scratch. May you please suggest me where could I sell it and for how much? Thank you.

      You're not going to hear anything on air (aviation) band in a disaster situation aside from aircraft declaring emergencies. This radio does not cover the amateur radio bands, public safety, etc. Only the air band & nothing else

    Isn't it illegal to transmit on airband?

    • @OnTourWithGerrit
      @OnTourWithGerrit 9 років тому +1

      With license it isn't at all. But only, if you need it like if you sit in a tower or plane or any other reason which makes sense. Otherwise if you go by 100% correct. You are not allowed to listen to Air Radio, also with license, if you do not need it.

      "You are not allowed to listen to Air Radio" ==> Maybe not in some countries. GB and Germany, I think, are examples, but in many if not most other countries there is no such restraint.

      on airband its complicated
      depending on country you can listen to airband, but do not dare transmit, not only do you require special liscences, like on HAM bands there is ediquette, 121.5mhz and 243 mhz are strict emergency bands, for emergency (mayday) and sometimes urgent (apn-pan) calls, as well as ELTs, transmitting on these without reason is against the law,
      when transmitting you must do it properly,
      lest say im turning in my c172 C-FAUX tail number for final on runway 29 at greenwood aerodrome
      ``greenwood tower alfa uniform xray turning final runway two niner alfa uniform xray``
      or ``charrolettown radio this is glider mobile one requesting permission to drive taxiway golf to gliding site over``
      and emergency calls such as maydays and pan pans overide any conversation, regardless of frequency
      some bands like 108mhz and 117.95 are reserved for radio nav beacons, very important for us pilots who are flying IFR or lost during VFR transmitting on them could cause interference
      and there are a variety of special weather station abnds, militayr and so on

      Cool. I thought I had read somewhere that in GB and Germany this was not allowed (which would be foolish IMO). Good to know that at least in GB this is not the case.

      A radio purpose built for airband is much better than one for general frequencies. I have one of these Icoms, and would never dream of trying to chat to the pilot of a Jumbo Jet flying overhead! My radio is purely for receive.

      That is a good price. But the reason prices have come down so much for these is their obsolete 25 kHz spacing. The VHF air band has moved to 8 1/3 kHz channel spacing recently. So with this radio, you can only listen to one-third of the available air-band channels. Icom air band radios that supports the new 8 1/3 kHz spacing cost a HELLUVA lot more....

    • @kimoclyde

      @@egbertsforever But this is only true in Europe, correct ?

    • @egbertsforever
      @egbertsforever  Рік тому

      @@kimoclyde No, also in the US 8.333 kHz channel spacing now is the norm. But not many ATCs here in the US are using it; you are right that Europe has been faster to adopt this. But again, officially it is now 8.333 kHz no matter where you are in the world.
