There actually arleady is a story that fits this song quite well. It's called "And the Mountains Echoed" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_the_Mountains_Echoed) I myself have not read it, but my sister has, so I am not sure. She says there even is a tree in the story.
And the Mountains Echoed has to have inspired the song. There are too many parallels to not have been. It's a beautiful and heartbreaking book, just like the song.
