Francis Poulenc - Sonata for Violin and Piano (2nd movement).
Anastasiia Mazurok - violin
Mark Livshits - piano
This sonata is one of the two string sonatas written by Poulenc in wartime (1942-43). It is dedicated to the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, who was murdered at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.
It was first premiered in Paris with Poulenc at the piano and his friend Ginette Neveu playing the violin.
The second movement has a quotation from Lorca “the guitar makes dreams weep”.
The opening chords of the piano and pizzicatos of the violin carry the guitar’s open strings harmonies. The movement is very flowing and dreamy, it represents an intimate dialogue, love in wartime.
After the climax, the joy of love gives way to the sadness and desperation of the final choral. Bizarre harmonies and unexpected shifts lead to the last glissando into nowhere (c) Anastasiia Mazurok
Since I’m a pianist, I feel like I don’t listen to pieces played by other instruments as much as I really should. Wondrous playing.
Honestly, this is so beautiful to listen to. I listen to it on 100% volume when i'm home alone. It just so beautiful. I want to play this song once i'm good enough on violin.
Im glad to hear that :)
SO SO good!!
Thank you Jesse!

Jayson Chan so flattered! Thanks!
Beautiful music and playing. It would be great to listen it with a higher recorder sound quality. But really beautiful
Yes, that's a bummer. I wish the sound quality were better... Thanks anyway!
So good! Subscribed :)
Jason Lux Music thanks a lot
Strange to put that title to a work sans guitar.
BTW Poulenc wrote only one work for solo guitar, in 1960. A single page masterpiece with the title Sarabande, dedicated to late French guitarist Ida Presti.
