When Buttigieg said that, racism was built into the highways, I thought people would understand it was a metaphor meaning that racism play a factor into the construction of the highways...I guess not.

Reading through the comments, its hard to seriously tell if people are just trolling or they seriously believe and mocking the notion that an inanimate structure such as a highway is practicing racism instead of the people who designed and implemented it. Good ole strawman.

Excellent video, well done. I looked up a few vids on this topic and found people on one side or the other waving their team flag. It's very refreshing to hear someone speak on this who's clearly done the research and giving an honest and balanced perspective. This should be the norm on our controversial topics but sadly everything is tribal these days. Thanks and great job!

So they built through the cheapest, oldest, or most run-down neighborhoods that the vegetation is reclaiming, in all of those? Also for clarity Robert Moses was of the Hebrew race... and even moreso 'White flight' was driven by jewish realtors placing blacks into their communities for the purpose of driving sales in their Levittown style projects, for profit! It's always been bankers for profits, Levittown was infact led by jews, not that it matters beyond your placement of 'no Hebrew race', just that you are omitting worthwhile informative facts. Btw the whole 'blacks hair banned from pools' originates from blacks, many of whom were still sharecroppers or working jobs that made them physically dirty, would attempt to use the pools as public baths due to lack of running water, so they felt to keep the pools clean so it is was difference of lifestyles and another agitation for worthwhile separation. The hairstyle ban outlasted jim crow, because if you learn about how dreads are formed, they aren't natural to blacks, they simply form from not washing your hair for months on end. thats why homeless people or nature hippies have get them as well. if you learned about how blacks are coerced into using cancer causing hair chemicals to attain a White beauty standard, then you will also have learned they use different products overall to manage their hair and many don't routine rinse with water, they use oil to clean braids, dreads, and afros. Especially for perms like jerry curls. In water, this oil and other dirt will rub and rinse out of their hair and off into the public pool, the cost of routinely cleaning this out would potentially be enormous and routinely requiring the draining and closing off of the facility just to force integration, instead of building them their own, which there was many cities (mainly the areas in the South with actual black historic presence) at some point did have black swimming pools, Nashville had 7 just for blacks, but they still wanted the presence of White girls in bathing suits. If you want to discuss and present history atleast due the justice of understanding everyones perspective. Because as far as social amenities are concerned, the lack of genuine racial conscious that so many modern sociologist and city planners display is actually one of simple callous revenge seeking from ethnomasochist, rather than prosperity creation for all. They still want to force integration at the cost of social fabric. There is great correlation, that when public amenities were forcibly desegregated violence did random acts of violence did increase, go youtube 'brough gun to disney arrested' and see what shows up. It's funny you mention the 14th amendement without real insight or clarity either, it was indeed a suddenly newfound opinion of the 14th amendment, that was accepted by Supreme Court Chief Justice Fred Vinson, 80 years after the 14th amendment and it's EPA were written and agreed upon by the same congress that willfully chose to live and create racial covenant communities in their own towns up North. Most of the modern sociologist who dip their toes into this subject, don't have a genuine White perspective or one that goes beyond 'socio-economics' and 'system past', they bring nothing new to the table in their half done historic takes. There is a reason gentrifictioan is continuing, it has everything to do with the word itself, "gentry" literally means owning class- under nobility. In other words. The innercity neighborhoods that were diversity bombed, to drive White buyers in new Levittowns, are now returning from uncared for houses, decaying overgrown houses, and rental properties, into higher density inncer city housing, that isn't just a cheap hongkong style housing pod either. The modern sociologist and ethnomasochistic Whites who don't care to advocate for their own understanding of White strife, don't believe in trickle down economics but they literally believe in trickle over equity. That if you force the creation of rainbow neighborhoods. Everyone will equally prosper and benefit from the variety of class and ethnic economics. Gentry means ownership class, the innercities are now rentals and had very little real historic presence of nonWhites before the 1940's, so it is Whites rightfully reclaiming their historic city centers as well. @@ByronTang

I am a road enthusist who just so happens to be black. I NEVER had problems with freeways at all and I NEVER saw freeways as a racist thing. I grew up with the Cincinnati freeways and I always loved riding up and down them in my dad's vehicles. I also loved looking at roadmaps, road building games, and freeway films for most of my life since I was 2 years old. Freeways have brought me joy for over 16 years and I use them to escape feelings of despair. It is a crying shame that freeways where used in evil ways to destroy communities of color and just ONLY serve white areas of cities. Freeways are used by everyone. And like I said, I am black and I am really passionate about highways. I never had an experience where a freeway ran me out of my neighborhood. With that being said though, I am upset that everything I love always has racism in its roots.

I can understand what you are describing, BUT most who lived in rural towns, on farms and owned rural businesses suffered greatly b/c of highway construction when they ran them through their properties and FORCED them out of their homes they grew up in. They also removed them when they came in and created the National Parks. Lets be totally truthful about the Highways and who ALSO suffered. It was 90% of Poor White Families who lost it all just b/c the govt wanted their land and homes to build the Highways. God help us all if this division continues. We have to stop the CONSTANT Political Race Baiting. I'm not saying that you are doing this, but whenever its time for another election they use the black community and the Black friends we have are sick of it, and I also left the Dem Party b/c they are destroying us with their policies. The people living today can never undue all the crimes of the past. We must learn from the past & more on. I mean, if we want to really right ancient wrongs, then everyone of European Heritage would need to go back to Europe & give the Native American tribes back their land. Italy would need to apologize to the Celts of Britainia & everyone of Anglo-Saxon heritage would need to go back to Denmark. France would need to change its name to Gaul go back where they came from. Human history can't be undone. Instead of blaiming people today for the sins of 1 to 2 centuries ago, society needs to move on.

You can't learn from the past without undoing the sins of the past, if you try to run away and downplay the amount of damage and fucked disparities you caused with past injustice, you are doomed to repeat it again. Numerous Black and immigrant communities that were bustling and thriving were burnt to the ground to the make highways to serve the needs of suburbs that were initially only built for white families, this is a fact. The ONLY way to correct for this would be by removing the sections of highways running through U.S. cities, and rebuilding the communities, and thus the wealth of minority neighborhoods.
There is no "moving on" without addressing the hell we have forced POC in this country to endure, the country will NEVER be allowed to reach its full potential when we have entire races of people stuck in perpetual, cyclical poverty cause by racist policy enacted only 60 years ago.

Lmao dude who taught those people because highways were created for the military first off they weren't even meant for regular citizens they were originally created for the military so they could be able to move equipment around and so there could be places for like tanks and things that are a huge vehicles to drive around if there was a war within our country so that way it's easier for them to access these vehicles and be able to use them.
And it was eventually changed to allow regular citizens to use the highways that a way we can get to other places much easier.

U can see the segregation now in our highway system that President Eisenhower created in 1956, the transportation planners at that time ripped through the nation’s urban areas with freeways that was intentional done to separate white neighborhoods from Black neighborhoods just in 20yrs of highway construction more than 1 million people had lost their homes nationwide most of them were black nd poorer ppl no surprise there lol. A perfect example would be Chicago we hear about the gun violence nd death there all the time on the news but here's a fun fact u can look up ur self the north side of Chicago crime rate is about 77% lower than the national average making it one of the most safest places in the whole entire country to be in but, now look west nd u can see the crime rate is about 410% higher then the national average making it one of the most violent nd dangerous places to be in nd guess what there only 9 miles apart 😆 that's basically a 30 min. ride on the highway nd bam ur in one of the most safest places in the country to be in the north side of Chicago but 30 mins on the highway going the opposite way tho nd bam ur in one of the most violent nd dangerous city in the US to be in lol see the problem? Same with New York, Boston ,Memphis ,Providence, New Jersey, California, ECT ECT across the whole US same thing nd same patterns highways nd infrastructure separating groups of ppl mostly by races nd classes on purpose it's the same way they fund schools wealthier the neighborhood more property taxes they can use to fund their schools, state funding is harder to explain nd usually federal money is spent on lower income neighborhoods for their school's but that's peanuts in comparison but that's how they designed the system nd infrastructure in America we see today it was done on purpose to segregate nd keep the poor dumb nd uneducated while helping the richer kids with better education wich means better outcomes in their future see the pattern yet

Yes some classism but I suspect there would have been more sympathy towards the demolishing of homes if those neighborhoods were instead filled with poor, Anglo-Saxons. I believe their approach would have been less heavy handed and compensation would have been higher. Understand that if the government takes your house, and gives you the market value in return, you’re still operating at a loss. It costs money and effort to relocate and resettle beyond that of just housing. Not to mention the destruction of businesses that previously served as an economic hub. These immigrants were poor, and poorer for sometime doubt. Black folks living in the country at this time were poorer too.

I have seen how incredibly loose the definition for racism is now and so that being said I truly feel your argument has no merit considering there is no hard definition for racism now!
it would appear to most if not all observers that racism is now 100% based on your political party and affiliations not by actions, words or intent. LET'S GO BRANDON!!!!

To act like the highway system wouldn’t have been implemented through our countries major cities in a similar way if there were no minorities at all is just ludicrous. Any country needs modern highways threw the nerve centers, I.e. major cities, to continue to develop. So called “White flight” didn’t begin until the 50s and 60s. That means there were still a ton of white people living in inner cities and like Byron pointed out many of European descent were displaced. Many rural white people were displaced as well. This is just more buzzword speech using anecdotal evidence to further divide the US and try to uplift one political party. Roman roads were continued to be used for centuries if not longer after the fall and no one said hey now these roads were built by war-mongering slavers! We’re such a weak, spoiled, crazy society 😩

"Any country needs modern highways threw the nerve centers, I.e. major cities, to continue to develop."
This is the most braindead, idiotic, self evidently incorrect thing I've ever come out of the mouth a person.
If this was the case, every single major city in Europe would have done the same following their destruction in WW2, but didn't.
If this was the case, cities like NYC, Chicago and especially Detroit would have never seen massive population drops following the construction of highways right through their city centers.
If this was the case, there wouldn't be COUNTLESS examples of Freeway removal all across the world where cities voluntarily tore down highways built through them, and replacing them with greenspace, new neighborhoods, schools, businesses and hundreds of new desperately needed housing units.
The construction of highways through city centers lead to the massive loss in housing stock available in the city proper, which then lead to creation of even more slums that these highways sought to get rid of. They lead to huge population declines as the white population fled to the outer suburbs, furthering the segregation of U.S. metro areas. They destroyed any semblance of beauty, walkability, of US cities, and the ability for these cities to be served by public transportation. They lead to the wholesale destruction of vibrant, bustling and thriving black and immigrant communities, locking them into perpetual and cyclical poverty and causing a nosedive in homeownership.
All of these negative effects are just the tip of the iceberg, the fact of the matter is that the building of highways through cities was a TERRIBLE experiment, and it provably made cities worse places to be. Stop building highways through our cities, and use the land for something more valuable.

Did you not watch the video ? Like do you not realize these highways can be used to marginalize and segregate communities from a city and they still exist today. Also the homes in those neighborhoods are valued less so those minority families can't even gain as much money as a white family would for having a house where there wasn't an interstate. Like take ur politics aside and actually understand the reality that people face

Sounds like they replaced shit neighborhoods with highways that bettered the community. Makes sense to me. 750 families had to move from a shit neighborhood to I would assume a better one. Next time though they should tear down booming business areas and high end new built homes for highways. Makes more sense that way.

People who had their homes destroyed were left HOMELESS AND BROKE, they were never relocated to the "better neighborhoods" outside of the city being served by the highway. Not that you give a fuck about their lives anyways.
