    Cmon people... this woman is giving you golden, detailed information on how to deliver a clear message. It's an INSTRUCTIONAL video..that's why it's long. I thought she delivered the facts and information concisely and confidently on how to achieve this..

    The most important point for me on this message was to focus on "Getting rid of the extra details". I am very detail-oriented and want to fill the space or message with the "whole" idea, which I have found overwhelms the listener/receiver. Thanks for posting this valuable video.

      Exactly, I think of it like this: using the minimum amount of information get your point across. Let your mark sell themselves the rest.

    I'm surprised at the amount of negative comments on the video. I've written down a load of notes for a speech I'm doing that I'm improving.
    The two main things I'm taking away are: the idea of opening by marrying 'what is most promotable about me?' With the thing that will reel my audience in. I think that's a nice structure, very clear!
    Also, I'm a motivational speaker, and I am SO walking up to people in the street and asking them if they'd like a 15minute motivational speech (I've done this kind of thing before and people love it). Thanks Marie and Rachael!

    EXCELLENT ADVICE to apply to our Marketing! 1) Meet People Where They Are To Take Them Where They Want To Go. 2) Every Pitch Should Be Personalized. 3) Get Rid of Extra Details. 4) Test Drive Your Message With People Outside of Your Inner Circle. THANK YOU!

    Wow - focusing on the moment and how that applies to the person I'm pitching to is exactly what I'm working on right now. Like you, Marie, I've had a LOT of different jobs, careers and am trained in a variety of areas. But if I get off-track and "casually" mention my 25-year massage therapy career or that I'm still a flight attendant, those histories then become the focus of what the person wants to hear about - NOT my new book or my workshop on helping people create a vision and mission for life. Thanks for another great episode!

    I thought this was a great example of broad strokes coaching - deliver info in 4 steps; the importance of clarity of message, knowing your audience/media outlet, position and communicate your message effectively and tie it all together. Julie has high energy is all - she was a live tv producer. I use my hands often when I communicate. I appreciated the content. Just like all of us, she's a work in progress.

    Lots of great tips. Always know who you are pitching. My biggest pet peeve is when someone asks me to write about their company. If they read my work, they would know I don't write about specific companies, I write about entrepreneurial finance, VC trends, etc. And it's always obvious when they are sending an email blast to every blogger in the world.

    Hand gestures make you energetic, and this topic needs energy. However my guess for anyone put- off by hand gestures, really, distractions must come pretty frequent.
    this video was useful.

    1. Meet people where they are to take them where they want to go - Figure out what the person you are communicating with cares about. That is your point of entry.
    2. Let go of insider jargon and speak in words that everybody can understand
    3. Get rid of extra details
    4. Test drive your messaging on people outside of your expertise and circle (family/friends)

    The best way that I've found to test drive my message is to do split A/B testing on Facebook, not with friends, but with facebook ads at about $5 each message. It has worked wonders for my marketing and well worth the $15 - $35 I spent on it. To put it bluntly, friends and family WILL lie to you, but the numbers from complete strangers won't. Once you get your message right, you will have a base to go off of for the duration of whatever it is you are pitching.

    • @aurasasalius-the-sun
      @aurasasalius-the-sun 8 років тому

      Hey could you give a bit more details on that? So you write a message and add a A/B score to it, then you boost it and see what happens? And do people really take time to respond and evaluate? Thanks

    • @carolinebeltran4721
      @carolinebeltran4721 9 років тому

      Good point. Listening is key to understanding and relating with a client. In every sales- related position that has a product or service, I've encountered that the customer may have more knowledge about than you may know, before speaking with them. It is not advised to assume that one should act superior in knowledge, but rather, be relatable to the client's needs in that product/ service, since they likely sought you for help! If you initially approach the client, asking a few light probing questions helps to open the conversation from their end. I find that this tip helps: keep your internal thoughts to yourself, unless it helps their conversation move you toward your goal.

    Yes, this is all obvious to someone who does presentations and writes resumes and sells something in any form all the time, but to someone who doesn't do any of those things regularly or who is new to this information it may not be obvious, and even if it is - repetition is how we learn.

    Mrs Hanfling just seems incredibly nervous, as I would be if I were in front of a camera after a lifetime spent behind the scenes. Public speaking advice is often to use a lot of hand gestures, and she was probably nervous about being on Marie TV and so read some books on the topic before coming on the show. She is not a professional speaker, but she does have something to say worth hearing. Just open another tab and listen as if it were an audio interview, her points are good and well communicated, don't get distracted by hand gestures.

    I'll use this group as my test drive. Hows this sound for a simple message for my 5 week course: "Embrace Death so you can Spring into Life" Target is anyone who has, or will have, a loved one passing on. It moves you beyond grief, igniting human potential.

    • @mimmycal
      @mimmycal 10 років тому +1

      @mysteanderson9039 10 років тому

      Mimmy Loftin I've changed it to Finding Peace when Death is Near, and yes it guides people who are fearing death through grief and into their potential

    • @alicialechelt2481
      @alicialechelt2481 10 років тому +3

      I like Finding Peace when Death is Near, but I wonder if 'Peace' is too optimistic of a word...people deal with a lot of guilt during loss and may not think that peace is possible or even gives their loved one the appropriate respect. Maybe think about "Finding Strength when Death is Near' or something of that nature? Talking about igniting human potential after grief is too big of a leap for me. I'd be just thinking, "How do I carry on with my every day life?" The other angle from a messaging perspective may be around 'honoring that person's life by continuing to embrace your potential every day.'

    • @mysteanderson9039
      @mysteanderson9039 10 років тому +1

      Alicia Babette Thank you for sharing this :) I'm getting clearer on my target market and their needs. Creating the course was one thing, marketing it and finding my tribe another. I have changed the byline to read "A practice of walking with faith". It is for people who are on the fence about finding peace when death is near. They know from a deep place within, that death itself is ok (the end of one journey and the beginning of the next) and need support in accepting that it is ok to be ok with death... does this make sense to people? I'd love to hear any feedback. In the course I guide them as they have a good look and heart to heart with their worst fears. It's actually more about overcoming fear than finding peace... needs further work but these discussions help a lot :)

    • @mysteanderson9039
      @mysteanderson9039 10 років тому

      Maybe "Facing your Fear when Death is Near" or Embracing your Fear when Death is Near

    Oooh, I hate to simply my language although I know I have to sometimes. It takes away some of the impact for me. Even if they "get it" in their own way, I feel I have to walk away knowing they only have 70% of the message. Like, people talk about winning, when trying to win is their problem. They actually want to succeed; move above the fight, not win and stay in the pit. To do that one needs to surrender not submit. The differences are tiny, but huge! I know I just lost everybody right now. = }

    I really messed up my first job interview. I am still trying to get into that company. That video really discourages me since I already made mistakes.

    I'm not surprised this is about communication, Marie is one of the few women on UA-cam who didn't turn me off almost immediately due to over-exaggerating a false sense of annoying glee. Yeah yeah, some guys do it to, but not nearly as many.

    gosh..I was so looking fwd to the answer. She is confusing me with her body, her eyes, her weird mouth expressions and more importanly..(because, I scrolled away from the visual)...I have no idea what she is saying. I'm 7:59 minutes in. I LOVE your work Marie, any chance you could handle this YOURSELF in a Q&A? Would so appreciate the learning

    For how credible & experienced this guest is... she sucks. Her hand gestures are distracting and robotic. She is a media producer with 20 years of experience, but she can't get her own message across in a straight forward interview?
    Interview about simplifying a message then rambles hers.

      It is a bit hard to watch. I finally covered the bottom of the screen to prevent seeing her distracting hand gestures. Marie was great at controlling the conversation. Overall, I did get something out of this interview.

      If you're wanting information on clarifying your message I would suggest the podcast "Building a StoryBrand" with Donald Miller.

    “Those who want to learn, learn. A message is good to you when you’ve allowed it to effect you.” So for the people complaining I would either try watching the video first to listen and second time to take notes. And ask yourself questions.

    I think her message was a bit light. I would have enjoyed more specific information. (IMHO) Marie I thought you were clearer than she. She needs to sit on those hands! It looks like she is strenuously restraining herself.

    I notice how Marie uses imitation listening. She uses more hand gestures in this video than usual because her guest is using them. but not nearly as much as this lady
