    It would be cool to see a *comparable* handmade ring vs mass produced ring. Besides the chunk of carbon, these two don't have much in common. Your work is lovely, but theyre too different. It would be informative to see comparable settings or styles so the benefits you're mentioning (the polishing and proper sizing) are what's actually being compared. Or similar price points - what does a $10k handmade ring look like vs a $10k mass produced ring?

    • @user-nc3gu3wm4e

      End product would look almost identical, except the price tag. If someone presents something handmade prepare to get hosed.

      @@cecilyerker then don't title it handmade versus mass produced if you aren't going to do an actual comparison. He's the one who came up with the concept, not anyone demanding it for "their viewing pleasure".

    From a fellow jeweler, great video!! This is a key point in jewelry manufacturing that alot of people don't talk about. In mas production every corner is cut to maximize the bottom line. When jewelry is handmade properly (where every single component can be polished during the process) it is purely art.

    Yes! I worked in a shop that specialized in making custom fine jewelry pieces, and we always tried our best to help people understand that our prices were higher because of the craftsmanship behind them. My engagement ring was a custom piece, and 6 years later I still love it so much. The ring you made is beautiful, and I think showcases your point in a gorgeous way.

      Hello! Since you worked in a shop I’d like to ask you a few questions. My bf purchased my ring from Israel and I love it but it seems to be quite flat which I don’t mind because I did dot want a super bulky ring but the issue when I saw the ring in person and tried it on to see if it would fit I came across the issue that it may be difficult to purchase a band because it wouldn’t go directly under the band like all other rings. The shape is a pear diamond and I remembered how Bobby White edited (?) this ring and I was wondering if it is also a possibility that I can raise the ring a bit to be able to fit a band directly under it? Also since I live in LA I feel it would be difficult to find a good craftsman that I can be confident that will give me what I want and I won’t have fear of going to one and thinking he may replace the diamond or try to scam us. Hopefully you see this ! Thank you

    • @ACLotRFan
      @ACLotRFan 4 роки тому +36

      It's actually pretty easy. It depends of course on what kind of jewellery you're looking at. When it comes to high end jewellery, it's all about the details. If you're getting one of those, I imagine it's quite an investment, so take time examining it. Bring a loupe, and check that all the stones are set in properly, i.e. that they don't move and that there is no gap between the setting and the stone (under the prong or around the rubover). Check the polishing, aspecially around the prongs. Things should be alingned well and not wonky. If you look at mass produced stuff and focus on the details, you see that things just don't properly fit together. Also the price. If something is way too cheap, it's not going to be handmade.

    • @AnagaMusic
      @AnagaMusic 4 роки тому +15

      @@ACLotRFan i mean most people dont know how to use a loupe properly and even what theyre looking for in a correctly/well set diamond. My best advice would be to find a jeweller that you trust (althought might be a biased opinion as i am a jeweller) but when im trying to sell a ring i explain the hand making process and my customers learn to trust in my products.

    • @hung2900

      It's actually from bare eye can notice the difference. Mass production jewelleries always having some areas that cannot be sanded or polished properly.
      However, very high skill Stone Setters and a pciece casted from a good Master (well calculated) can bring the quality very close to the Hand-made one. But because of Mass Production, it's hard to achieve 100% units having the same quality.

    Beautiful work, Bobby. I had my platinum engagement ring hand forged by Victor Canera a few years ago and I haven't purchased a CAD/cast ring since. I'll never go back. My setting looks like it did the first day I got it, the workmanship is exquisite. It's so nice to see others make rings in this manner, it's *true* craftsmanship. So many people focus all of their energy on the stone(s) and only care about the "style" of the mount. To me, it's like hanging a Renoir in an Ikea frame.

    As a fellow goldsmith I applaud your work and your defense on why handmade is much more expensive than mass produced jewelry. I know a few people who were in the mass production side of jewelry making and when they tried to make jewelry the old fashioned way they completely failed since they are used streamlined and machine dependent ways of creating jewelry. This job is both tough on the body and mind and having a customer trying to cheapen the price on our hard work pisses me off a bit. It takes so many years to learn this craft and actually takes a lifetime to even master.
