One important thing you forgot to mention for the bilt credit card is that you must use it at least 5 times each billing cycle to earn the points.

Getting the right beginner credit card is SO important! This is gonna be such a helpful video for those just getting started. I personally started with the Chase Freedom Student and then moved into the Chase Freedom Unlimited. But if I was talking to someone just starting out and wasn't a student, I would recommend the Discover it first (secured or cashback versions), and then tell them to move into Chase right after that to avoid ever worrying about the 5/24 rule. Great video all around man!

Hey Spencer, thanks for the value comment. I’ve been wondering what exactly to do because earlier this year around May I had applied for a Discover it credit card and got denied due to having no credit history. I have no credit cards currently, I’m not attending college, and I just turned 19 recently. I do work but I was confused on what exactly to do since I’m not attending college and have no credit history. So just to be clear the best thing for me to do is to get a secured credit card?

You can actually float a balance on a credit card without affecting your credit score too much. The most important thing is 1-maintaining a low utilization so you can't just carry balances on everything and 2- only doing so on credit cards where you're in a 0apr intro period. A majority of beginner cards these days have 12-18 month 0apr periods. So if you have a sudden expense - let's say you need to replace your car tires like I did - you can throw it on a new card to help meet the spend for your intro bonus, then set up automatic payments from your bank to pay out the balance through your 0apr period. As long as you manage your balance and are otherwise responsible with your spending its essentially a free loan.

The discover It card is essential to start off with purely bc the student will get you approved when you have no credit. I had no loans. nothing. So I had no credit and got denied on another card but discover it was boom done (with a low limit at that time so they won’t let you get to out of hand if that’s a worry)

Hilton Surpass > Gold if you take a handful of road trips or staycations per year. Gas points + base of 3x hilton points, -155 yearly fee to start. in addition the 2 resort nights and basically free diamond (meaning daily hotel incidental credit). My resort nights were upgraded to a suite, bringing total reward value to about $1000. In theory the gold looks better by a few dollars in a points calculator, but as soon as you factor in free stays and incidental credits, even w/out upgrades Surpass far... surpasses the gold card.

Us bank cards are really under rated as great first credit cards. US bank has really good secured cards that automatically unsecured after 8 to 12 months. It's also really easy to get unsecured cards even with like a 600 fico score. Defiantly not great CPI, but the cash back cards are pretty competitive. I bought my first gun with a US bank card and got 5% cash back on a $500 gun with sporting goods rewards. I plan on getting a quest pro with the 5% cash back on electronics. US bank branches and ATMs are also everywhere. They have a great app which encourages you to pay before the statement date. Not the due date, but the statement date.

Nice video - thanks! I agree with your choices of credit cards - all wonderful even for non-beginners.
I'd note that 'on time and in full' is good advice - but that's not enough to cover the full 65% like you mentioned. To get credit for the full 65%, you *also* need to be using a relatively small percentage (30% of available credit will be detrimental to one's score. Crazy, but that's how it works!

Sorry- I'm new to cards and trying to wrap my head around this. So, if my available credit is $1000, I need to spend at least $100/month (10%), but if I spend more than $300/month (>30%) then it is detrimental to my score?

    • @alolansandshrew1756
      @alolansandshrew1756 Рік тому +3

@@aria5527 I guess I would summarize it as follows. First and foremost, never spend money that you don't have or don't intend to pay off when the statement comes. Given that, it's best to make sure that the balance on your cards are all *under* 10% of their limit (so, $100 in your example) when the statement closes. Under 30% (e.g., $300 in your example) is okay, but under 10% is better. However, there is no benefit to spending $100 just to reach the 10% threshold; what I intended to say in my comment above was that keeping your spending below 10% of the limit just serves as a nice healthy booster to your score. Hope this helps!

Wish i had better advice when i started. I didn't know what i was doing, so i went to my credit union and they gave me a secured card. Fine... Problem was, that card couldn't be converted to unsecured, so i was out the history when i closed it. My oldest card ended up being Amazon chase, which i think is an underrated starter card. I think they hand them out easily for a low limit. I forget what i started at but I'm at 9000 now. Altho i will say this is better if you use Amazon a lot.
Discover is another workhorse i like. It was my second. And my favorite. Their customer service is top tier and that's the most important thing to me.

Question: What happens with your first credit card when you upgrade to your second card?
Also: What's the best / optimal percentage I should be spending on a card to build credit as efficiently as possible (Ex: Try to spend 10% of your total limit each month)
Following my previous questions, is there a minimum I should be spending each month? (Ex: spend at least 5% of your limit each month)
Finally if there is a minimum I should be spending, if I upgrade to a new card do I still have to spend that minimum on all my previous cards? ( If that's the case, it seems like it would get stressful after a few credit cards)
Thank you for any and all advice.

Another Question: To be safe, could I just transfer the money from my credit to my savings, then back to my credit from my savings?
(Just to safely build credit overtime)
      If I can do this,
Does it matter if I transfer the minimum spending percentage in one day? Or should I spend it over the month?
I'm guessing this would ignore the Cashback benefits though, right?
Could I build credit faster if I had 2 credits cards? One with money being transferred back and forth, and the other being used for it's cashback benefits.
If that is the case, could you have like 3 cards transferring back and forth and use just 1 for benefits? Would this build credit way faster?
      If everything above works..
How many cards should I have transferring back and forth?
I'm guessing too many is actually bad for credit?

LOVE my quicksilver card...got it after a cap one secured credit card...trying to build credit...used both in Greece no problem! wondering if there is a collection of cards to have in the capital one space like chase? I wanted the reserve for travel but after seeing another video I'm aiming for the venture x. Thoughts?

Venture X is the nicest card for travel but the SavorOne is a nice competitor to the Freedom cards. There is also an AF Savor but I do not really recommend that one.

Yep, me too except I started with the Discover It Chrome card. I applied through Resy so I’m getting 20% statement credit back on all restaurant purchases in my first year up to $250 cash back which pays for the fee. LOVE the card and that 75,000 points sign on bonus is nice too

After watching the video on I was looking at either the chase freedom flex card or the quicksilver but looking into the quicksilver there is 4 different "quicksilver" cards. Does anyone know which card he is actually referring to? Also of the two cards what do yall think is the better option?

Does credit utilization count for just a single card ? Like is it bad to have one card pushing it’s credit limit, but I have 5 other credit cards with still full balance. Will my credit be hurt because of the one card utilization or is it part of a bigger % with all my cards ? Hope that question makes sense

Thank you for this video, it is pretty informative but I do have a question lingering in my mind. So I currently have a discover it student card and I’ve managed to get my score up to the 700s, I’ve been considering the capitol one quicksilver card, but would this be in anyway an upgrade? Or is it just pretty much the same league? I’m Just a little confused since I read that the regular quicksilver card requires at least a 690 score, which is the one I’m interested in

      Up to 697 Fico 8

Started with Discover IT. As a student I was scared of credit cards due to family having issues with it but it's been pretty straightforward! Loved it!
4 years later (now) i just applied for the Chase Unlimited because I'm now making actual money and seek better rewards.
And my biggest and only gripe with Discover has been it's acceptance. It's always these one off places where discover isn't accepted and I'm forced to use my debt which i typically avoid doing at all cost.
    Other than that highly recommend.
Started at like 400 credit limit over the years and now at 8,000.

Wondering how fast should I go when getting my second card? Was thinking of doing the Gas/Grocery card to start then a best buy card for a new gaming pc and some other things down the line. I don't pay rent at the moment. If anyone has any tips on what I should do or any apps that might help me track my progress. I have credit karma but wondering if there's better options.

How come the Built Mastercard is at the bottom of the list? According to everything you mentioned, the only thing it doesn't have is the signup bonus, but other than that, it looks like it has better benefits than all the other cards you mentioned.

    • @johnsfinancetips
      @johnsfinancetips  Рік тому +2

That's a great question! So for a complete beginner who has never had a card or maybe 1 there are a lot of benefits to juggle on the Bilt Mastercard. My rationale for the top card is to help people get approved and learn how to effectively use the card. Then once you've got 1 or 2 card the Bilt card would be very easy to manage. Hope that helps!!

I’m currently back at my moms tryna get in my own 2 but I remembered my kids mom opened a credit card I’m my name under her moms credit line( idk why I let her I didn’t really understand credit) and Credit karma says they have a 100% utilization rate. Ive always paid it off on time only having used it for gas, and She’s closed the car since then, how do I fix my score asap, do I open multiple cards to raise the utilitzation ? I feel I can manage it if it’s what I need to do. I wanna soon move out n hopefully get a car loan one day w out getting screwed at least on the financing lol really appreciate the knowledge you put out for free bro ! Much Love
