Llwyn Onn (the ash grove) is a traditional Welsh folk song whose melody has been set to numerous sets of lyrics. The most well-known was written, in English, by John Oxenford in the 19th century.
NOTE: These are not the original welsh lyrics. The original song has a much more darker side about how a cheiftain misfired an arrow at his daughters sweetheart but misfired killing his daughter himself. A much more tragic tale than the lovers who part in this more anglicised version.

I had my own ash grove for years and it would make me remember this song whenever I went out there.
Now it's gone. They all died because of the emerald ash borer. Very sad. Cannot plant more. There are no more.

Beautifully rendered, but this is the Bowdlerised version. In the original 'Llwyn Onn' is nota grove of ash trees but the name of a mansion house (palas - 'Ym mhalas Llwyn Onn gynt') owned by the local chieftain (pendefig) who kills his only daughter by accident, aiming to shoot her lover of whom he disapproves as he had set her up to marry someone else, old and cantankerous (hen ac anynad). Original is also on UA-cam, sung (brilliantly) by Thomas L Thomas.

We sing this at the Girl Scout camp I go to. Our camp is even called "Ashgrove Adventure". I am not sure if the camp adopted this song as a secondary camp song or if our camp was intentionally named after this song. I will have to ask the people who have been a part of it since the beginning. Either way, I am so glad I found a Cymraeg recording of it. I love the way the language sounds, and I hope it never dies.

We sang this in High School in New Zealand growing up. I didn't know at that time that it was sung in Welsh, but I always knew I was Welsh, as my father instilled it in me. I have lived in Swansea three times in the past 40 yrs and would not have left, if my parents and kids had kept me away. Love my Homeland.
I have only seen the Welsh language, or Gaelic, in writing but it sure looks as though it is one difficult language to master. I can't put any other languages against this as a comparison to help me figure it out. I guess that Gaelic is one very tricky language. I wonder if the Scot's Gaelic is different from the Irish Gaelic???
@@linda5565 Welsh and Gaelic are different branches of the Celtic language family tree. Welsh, Cornish, and Breton form one branch, and Irish, Manx, and Gaelic form another branch. They are related, but Welsh isn't Gaelic.
