- #darbarfestival | Irshad Khan plays the surbahar (bass sitar), using its thick, deep-toned timbres to explore Raag Darbari, harking back to when musicians played for kings at the royal court.

The surbahar’s deep-toned strings can bend upwards over an octave, allowing artists to explore the contours of a raga using only a single fret. Suited to the slow elaborations of dhrupad, it is large, heavy, and notoriously difficult to master. Here it is played by Irshad Khan, who hails from the illustrious Etawah (‘Imdadkhani’) gharana alongside greats such as Shahid Parvez, Vilayat Khan, and Imrat Khan (Irshad’s father). His ancestors gave shape to the modern sitar, customising the design and mastering gayaki ang (singing style). Irshad lives in Canada today, playing and teaching sitar and surbahar around the world.
Here he plays a vilambit gat [slow melody] from Raag Darbari, described by musicologist Deepak Raja as being “the emperor of ragas, and the raga of emperors”. The word ‘darbar’ refers to to the royal courts of past ages, and it is easy to imagine Darbari’s majestic tones echoing across marble floors, bringing solemn relief to kings, diplomats, and warlords. The mood is grave, reverential, and often slow, blending lyrical passages with a precise microtonal geometry. Its optional ‘Kanada’ suffix denotes the raga’s likely origins in Carnatic music - some consider it to have been imported North by Mian Tansen in the 16th century.
It uses Asavari thaat [SRgmPdnS], with Re and Pa as the vadi and samvadi [king and queen notes]. Characteristic phrase resolutions include gmR and dnP, and the raga is often elaborated in mandra saptak [low octave]. Musicians often pause on Ga and Dha, ornamenting them with andolit [heavy oscillations]. It resembles the modern Carnatic Raga Natabhairavi, and the Western natural minor scale.

Its not about whether he plays the surbahar in the Khayal style and deviates from the dhrupad style. An instrument can be played in different ways and can be aesthetically pleasing. But this is a really bad Darbari. The jod and Jhala are played only to demonstrate his fretting technique, there is no raagdari here. The ati komal gandhar is just not heard, it is pounded out of existence. This is a delicate and sensitive raga. It makes no sense to play it like one would play a Todi or Multani.

Great performance.. But I must say very disappointed by how the crowd reacted. No "Tehzeb", "Shaistagi" and "Sharafat" (sorry can't translate these terms). This is what happens when you try to make everything more appealing to the more westernized audience. This is hindustani Khyal music, Raag Darbari kanada. Not a concert by AC/DC. Why is the crowd howling and whistling? would you also howl and whistle if you are at an Opera?. The crowd should educate them selves regarding the mannerism for listing Hindustani Khyal music. Otherwise, our classical music will slowly and steadily deteriorate.

This is just stupid. You can't have everyone to be fully immersed in a style and culture of music the way you like it. Next time you go to a concert you should hand out pamplets to how other humans should behave and their thoughts.

Way back in the nineties I saw Irshad Khan play in Utrecht. And I did not like it. His playing is far too aggressive. More like showing off his prowess than a musician loving music. I love Hindustani classical music since I was 15 (in 1980) but I have never liked the way it was played by Irshad Khan. His father plays much better.
