  • Rereading the rough draft of my project DE! I've been wanting to read this book even before I began writing it. After printing out my rough draft, which I decided was not a zero draft because of how long I've been writing, I finally got to read the rough draft! I can't believe that I'm finally at the place with my high fantasy novel that I am ready to start editing!

You can do it! It's so hard not to line edit tho!

Your past experience with line editing too early really resonates with me. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation are generally my strengths, as well as vocabulary (foreign languages are my passion). When reading, I am super alert to mistakes and awkward/poor phrasing. I criticise myself relentlessly for missing a comma or overusing semi-colons.
However, allowing these concerns to take precedent means missing the bigger picture, as you rightly said. This is why I have struggled with rereading and editing in the past. I have to control myself and focus more on having a good story to edit in the first place. No wonder I have often felt that one of my ideas made no sense in the long run, LOL!
Drawing a LOT of inspiration from this video!

i think the different writing styles of writers is so interesting. i, for example, would never edit this way. I always edit in Microsoft word, by reading it out loud. but to each their own. ty for uploading.

I've binged a bunch of your videos tonight. Loved your video and your process. I printed my rough draft out and wrote both notes and line edits on it. I think next time I will do what you did. I also make pretty clean zero drafts as I wrote probably because I use google docs and its hard to ignore the red marks.

It is definitely important to start with the 'big picture' editing first and then work your way down! That must have been so frustrating to spend time line editing your rough draft only to remove that whole section!

How long does it take you to go through the entire editing process after writing the first draft? I'm trying to get through my story, and it is taking forever.

    • @SaraLubratt

The entire editing process or draft 2? Draft 2 took me several months of being really intentional about it.

@@SaraLubratt Now I'm thinking from the first time you started writing to when you call it quits--have gone through all your line edits and proofreads, etc.. Why I ask because I see no end for mine :/ I just decided to just skip a lot of the editting process because I don't think I would ever finish if I did all the types of edits. I think I once saying you are writing a high fantasy of about 250,000--that's about mine as well and that seems impossible to finish. ugh
