Bravo bravo Mr. Whiteley! I've been a huge Jongen fan for over 50 years and used his organ pieces. I remember when your major artlcle our hero came out in The American Organist in the 1980s. It was superb -- I thought your sold him short but have come to realize his work has its limitations. (I will never, alas, get the Sonata Eroïca's appeal.) Oh well, Symphonie Concertante is a really great achievement and that makes him a great composer, right? The poor man lived through two World Wars. In the second his son disappeared which was a terrible shock to the Jongens such that never composed again. Do I have that right? Don't know if you could call this an eventless life ;-)
Brilliant Organist and recitalist - With his vast knowledge of Bach and Jongen - no wonder he was awarded his Doctorate of Music -if any the award was very late John Webster Scarborough
