  • In this video I review my Tobias Growler bass. At the bottom of the description is detailed instructions about the contour switches.
Contour Switches: One for each Channel. Down position gives a low/high boost and cuts mids. Center position turns the contour model off. Up position gives you a low/mid boost.
Internal Trim Pots: Located inside the control cavity. Each set of two effects one channel. Left knob high freq gain for the down position. Right knob low/mid boost for the up position.

At 7:40 where you are talking about your favorite settings you mention you like the pickup blend in the middle. However, the blend knob (top row closest to bridge) position sure looks like it is panned to the rear coils. It is blended to the rear coils during the sound sample too.

Cannot wait to own this instrument, perfectly encapsulates my voice, incredible tone-shaping options

Do you ever buy this bass? I'm looking at getting one

Well...dang! I just got a tobias growler second hand, for what I figure is an incredible price considering that it seems to be able to play any genre exceptionally well. I've looked online for how to use the controls and no one has been able to explain them as eloquently as you have. I've only been playing for about 9 months so thank you!

I've had mine since 1997 (must be the same model year as the video because they are almost identical). It's still my go to for session gigs, especially if there is more than one style called for, and I have gotten WAY more out of it than I ever paid for it. I'll never sell it.

Thank you for the comment Alfred. I love this bass. Probably the best tone of any bass I've ever owned or even played.

Thats the bass that I play with. Do you have any newer tobias bass's and if so how do the newer compare to the older?

I'm currently listing my Gibson Tobias Growler 5 (5-string) with Tobias TKL hardshell case. It's on Craigslist Portland (OR)...check it out!

When both coils are engaged, can both set of bass/treble knobs be used to tweak the sound?

Ebay and reverb have them, but I usually find the best deals in the used section of Guitar Center's website. Thanks for watching and commenting.

well they retail for pretty high. Too bad no one makes these basses. They'd sell like cakes!

Yeah I feel you. I'm telling you keep your eye on Guitar Center's used section though. Sometimes they knock $1-200 off of them just to clear out their inventory. I got the one in this video for $450 in 2017. It might sound steep, but I'd stack it against any new $1000 bass. Also look into used MTD basses. They are designed and made by Michael Tobias too.

Im looking for a 5 string. there are a few on sale but closer to the 1000$ mark. Its funny with all the technology , we cant replicate stuff that was made in the 80s

True. I do notice the 5 strings are more expensive. I messed up and missed the end of an ebay auction for a MTD 5 string for $195 and I'm still kicking myself.
