Have you become an architect? Building things in inefficient ways just to meet an aesthetic design? I think having all of the starting beavers named architects might have infected you
id say just contain housing and main buildings, like science and storage, to the line. but things like plank and gear builders, and log pumpers can be outside of it.
Unfortunately our real civil architect friend doesn't seem capable of grasping this tiny yet essential concept and will continue to go off on gimmicky tangents and continue his mass beaver serial killings that he has clearly shown, time and time again, to be a great fan of!
For your line idea, maybe have some stuff outside and they can be the workers, what you would have had on the lowest level before. Inside the line can be the rich posh beavers and there can be a few hauling districts to allow goods to get into the line
2nd this. All the workers, farmers, log pumpers, etc are outside the line. The only thing inside the line should be stuff for recreation and well-being. Monuments will go inside the line too.
Agreed! This way, you get to keep the Line, but also get to play with the rest of the map! It seems like a waste to pick such a cool big map and not be able to use so much of it!
My opinion, which I know counts for very little, on the Timberborners' Line... Outside the line is where the architects work, they don't even get to be in the line, they're architects. Then in the Line, you have your different levels of engineering society, the trainees on the bottom, the regular ones in the middle, and the master engineers on the top. Each group makes life better for the next group so that the Master Engineers end up living a life of luxury. This allows for buildings and stuff outside the line, but those beavers only get the basic foods and amenities, while the Master Engineers have their choice of the finest foods beavers can cook.
I think focusing on development first is the way to go. Once you have a solid foundation, it’s easier to build up, make adjustments, and fine-tune things gradually. That flexibility really helps without getting bogged down in all the details at the start! You are thinking to far ahead, dont make plans but have goals step by step
Get your colony into a good sustainable spot before doing the Line or another mega project! You’ll probably want more farmers to get through those kolrabi, but once you’re in cassavas you’ll be in a better spot and don’t need the kolrabi.
After the cycle 1 needs. Rush medium storage tanks for enough water to get through a longer drought. Then a small dam that keeps the farm area good throughout a drought. Keep building the dam up to allow for pumping at all times. Keep the dam scaling up as the droughts get longer and it lasts 40+ days. After that anything/everything is possible. It is just waiting and the occasional labor balancing.
If you want to make different districs for low-class, mid-class and upper-class beavers, make houses into a skyscraper, where "better" beavers live on upper floors and "worse" on the bottom. Then on the roof build well-being stuff so they get the buffs when they are sleeping (buffs need to be loaded into beavers because if they just run by it, it wont load enough of the buff to last an entire day)
@snowballil3133 no, you would have an entrance on every floor of a dystopia rce wants to create. So it would be same skyscraper but with 3 entrances and no crossing between 3 class-levels.
I think it would be best to focus on growing and surviving, then closer to the endgame moving everything into the line. I would hate to see this season ending early 😭
As a has-been punkrockstar (extremely locally xD ) I really like the poprocky intro tune, especially the switching from the classic to the rocky version. Please keep it in! Maybe even expand it and put it on spottify so I can play it at parties with rockstars, maybe I'll be able to get you a gig xD Nah serieusly doh, I do like it alot and I picked up my guitar again because of it, so keep rocking!
I think anything related to resource gathering gets an OK to be outside the line, think of it like imports. Also for the intro, just mix it up every couple episode, do what's fun for you mate, we're just here for the ride!
I think that water and greenery dependent buildings could stay on the edge of the line so that it could make more space for the purposeful buildings inside
Love what you do and Timberborn is my favourite series.❤ But I don't like "The Line" project, mabey later in some part of the map. But I think it is a pity that you limit yourself on just small part of the map when you have lot of land to play with.
I like the original intro better. Also for your line idea I would keep your upper class beavers inside the line and have a lot of wellbeing for them. Outside the line keep your working class “scum” beavers and make them supply all the goods for your upper class beavers. Love Timberborn Fridays!
The intro is dope, keep it in 🤘🏻with "The Line", you could rotate it 90° so you have the river running through with the dam for the poo water incidents (which we don't talk about), then you'll have green areas adjacent the water for growing, dynamite gonna be useful later to increase its depth. A proper engineering project 😁
I’d say the finished product should only include the Line, but for now, definitely utilize whatever space you need to for your colony to thrive. You’re going to need a ton of wood for the Line.
Keep the intro as is, and don't do the LIne challenge yet -focus on just making a decent colony spread and then build the Line out in pieces. Also just to inform you when you get dynamite you can extend the length of the tubes on pumps or showers by setting it to custom length and then making it zero - then you can modify the terrain underneath it.
Get a functioning colony with the main resources, then use that to build your mega projects. Especially with the building demolishing giving you resources back a starter district can be temporary, and separating functional growth from mega projects saves you time in the long run I know RCE won't read this, but some other viewers might benefit from it xD
My thoughts: 1. Intro- I do prefer the old style. No live action. 2. Rule for line- I think you can be a little loose with how you access fresh water for the line city. The real one uses desalination at one end. They get to use plumbing to move the water as well. That lagoon pump is all good. 3. Fun- I have so much when I watch.
Rules for the line, only beavers must not go out of the line. If there needs to be work done outside, it must be relegated to bots. Architects work on the lower part with minimal decoration and abysmal work environment, engineers live fulfilling happy lives at the top with a lot of entertainment, very beavernomic design, and in a different district to the architects.
In my professional opinion, it may be prudent to venture beyond the wall to secure vital resources such as water and construct essential infrastructure like dams. This proactive approach would not only future-proof Line but also facilitate the efficient allocation of space within the wall for various amenities. Moreover, it is unrealistic to assume complete self-sufficiency within the wall, as external assistance is often necessary for the supply of goods and protection from external threats, including adverse weather conditions. Lol I made that sound professional for no good reason
I enjoy how Matt build barracks on the far side of the map from where a majority of his beavers will be working which ultimately decreases total work completed during work hours.
The thing they don't tell you about "The Line" is that it's really just designed for housing, offices, and retail, and all the critical utility and industrial facilities are, by necessity, placed outside of it, so placing necessary buildings like farmland and water pumps outside of the line is keeping within the theme.
BRIDGEMAS IS COMING!!! Get your custom knitted holiday sweater NOW to guarantee Xmas delivery: realcivilengineer.com/collections/merry-bridgemas-knitted-sweaters
If I'm not mistaken robots can move ground, I wonder if that means it's possible to have multiple layers of forests/crops on top of each other if there's water on each level near by. Does anyone know? (Or is sunlight a thing?)
Tip for construction priority: If they are building something ahead of another, you can just pause the construction of the building you don't want finished so they move onto the correct one and you don't have to change the priority of the building you paused. Its a lot quicker.
The old intro feels nostalgic. The new intro is good, I'd keep the new one for now, then go back. Maybe just consider it a variety. Who says you need the same intro each time? Much love tonyou and yours. /Jon Bon
Not trying to spoil this for you, but I started playing this map with iron teeth… they plant and harvest food so slow! My first bad tide was also season 5. Good luck!
Remember, one of the main design parameters of the line is modular repeating self contained segments. I want to see the industrial engineering balance spreadsheet minimized for average travel distance of each worker, except architects, used to determine each module design.
Since the last Timberborn episode, I loaded this map up myself and got a colony up to 30 happiness. The early game is a challenge on this map, I'm eager to see real engineering at work.
What you should do is make the line as like the central city and the outside can still have housing, industrial and Luther buildings. Also the big flat area of land where the dead trees are, you should make canals coming from the aqueduct and make it into a farming area because there isn’t any bigger flat surfaces practically perfect for farming when there’s water.
i would say either keep all your main buildings inside but you can plant outside and major infrestructure like a mega dam and water storage can go outside the line. Another idea that someone suggested was to keep inside the line posh and i think this would work well with my idea as well. You could keep all the things running the city outside the line (including some slums maybe for the workers) and keep all the niceties inside the line for a few of the posh (engineering) beavers
I used to be a tough guy , really. I used to never get anxious like not even watching a video where someone's hurting a dog or something, but now I'm 28 and matt here, gets me so anxious in a videogame series called timberborners. I'm such a wuss.
All these people shocked that Matt is making the city to arbitrary architectural challenge standards instead of just focusing on efficiency: He *said* he's building a **dystopia**, this is exactly what he should be doing! What, you think the most dystopian beaver city ever would be built according to *engineering* principles?? Of course not, it could only ever be done by putting aesthetics and arbitrary achitect ideas first! smh y'all, some of you guys really need to pay attention and/or sign up for remedial RCE classes I propose the name of the city be a mash of "Neom" for the actual line city, and "Nom nom" for the beavers and how they chop down trees with their big chompers: *"Nom Neom"* ...okay, it's still not a great name, but we can workshop it, fellas. We've got a long season ahead of us, I bet someone can come up with a great name along the way!
I started this map a little after your first episode of this season. I double stacked with levies where you built your dam to flood the area you are building your new lumber farm and planted mangroves there. the rise in water level doubles if not tripples the farmable area of the the starting plateau.
My vote is ok for infra and necessary resource/industrial items to be outside the line Keeps housing and entertainment in the line as much as possible though 😁
I like the intro, keep it. I want extra versions when things get hairy and the intro goes operatics once in a while. I do like to hear it the old intro in other seasons though. Or maybe in certain spinoff episodes
I believe you should be building everything in the line, including your trees and planted food. All water should also be pumped only from the line. I'd say damming water outside the line is all that's allowed. Preferably, I'd like to see you build the line over the waterway and include the metal mine as well.
I reckon focus on the multilevel thing ... so a Cube rather than a Line?Have all the fields and trees and what have you outside (yes, pumpers as well, industrial zone ground floor, then residential then entertainment, wonders and massive beaver statues on top.. Farms and storage are allowed outside the Cube for the peasant yokel beavers (like me)
I think a completely contained line would be TOO neat for a dystopian city. You could have most of the buildings back to back/touching and a few outliers but no buildings that are completely disconnected from the rest
I think the line should run the other direction, down the river so it has the water fall and lagoon within it. Also you shouldn't worry about support buildings being outside the line with this early of a stage, strict line borders should be something to work up to later on, when you have the resources and infrastructure in place not just to survive but are thriving.
With the addition of overhangs and the ability to stack platforms, along with the fact that plants don't need light in this game, mean you could definitely put everything inside the line, but it would require a lot of planning and a ton of metal blocks. In the short term I don't think you can really begin building in such a way because you would need to have extensive infrastructure to afford to build the shell and platforms. If you have one (or ideally both) of the sides made of earth and then use water pumps or dumps to fill a shallow reservoir at the top the whole thing would be irrigated and you would be able to plant things like trees on the top which would probably be closer to the Saudi's vision than they will ever achieve.
I'd say don't do the line, but if you're going to, the restriction should be on paths rather than buildings. This means the outside of the line is defined by the fronts of a row of buildings rather than a wall of some sort. This would also mean you can build dams and stuff outside the line as long as you demolish any paths needed to build them after.
Both intro music is great, maybe pick in random each time as surprise? I mean, the channel hired Brad Pitts from different multiverse just to perform for us:)
Hello mr RCE. There is a visual tool in the top right, the leftmost icon under the "current weather" bar, that lets you display long grid lines, so you don't have to mark stuff out with paths if you don't want to.
make it so that EVERYTHING (even lumberjacks and stuff) is inside the line, it would be a lot more challanging and a LOT more entertaining! (Keep the new intro too)
I think you should be able to build outside of the line (exept for housing and haulers and things like that) but anything outside of the line has to be a seperate district
They have to bring resources to the line, so storage, Science, housing, breeding pods, should all be contained in the line. Resources can be gathered outside of the line such as farms, foresters, industrial power area.
I think the reimagined opening is fine to keep. As far as the line goes, I think industrial and agricultural work is fine outside the line. All you living places, city center, medical stuff, science stuff, recreation, and decoration should stay in the line. You cannot control where the water and metal sources are. I think having storage in the line is better than outside the line. Piles associated with gatherer flags and such can be outside. Warehouses should be inside. Your builders and haulers can work outside the line but the buildings for their jobs should be inside.
Everything contained in The line should be the ultimate goal plus that last monument, build outside of it along the way. Line would require a lot of clever irrigation so take your time and try to avoid incidents for now ;p
keep the intro, handsome-faced fella. I came to love that the patreons get featured in your video, like Labradog and ScientistNate, and Labradog has a special place in my heart after seeing their benevolence of giving away a lot of subs in your stream lmao. When will you be streaming again? We now have another addictive game... you could also stream whenever you're recording the usual games, it'd be awesome! cheers from Brazil!
Okay so I got timberborn because I've watched you play it. I didn't realize that we are on the same map until I saw last episode. I know you intentionally are over complicating things but my goodness the difference between you and I are crazy even though we have a lot of similarities. I am gonna comment underneath this with a screenshot of my progress so far. still waiting for my first bad tide but might give you a couple useful ideas lmao. Love the videos don't mean any disrespect with this i promise
I suggest an inversion of your idea, instead of the cushy life being at the top, that should be the residential area for the worker "lower class" beavers, so after a long hard day, they have to go all the way to the top just to get to bed. With the ground floor being the super awesome high class area.
I think as long as the line is impressive - maybe multi tiered and looks cool on the inside, then you can support it with w/e you need to make it work from outside :)
THE LINE - Idea: The Line should be your high society district. It should be the only location with good water and green space. All other areas should be bad water, dirt, and manual labor jobs.
I like the rock version of the intro, it takes a funny idea and adds some actual effort to it. I think you should keep the song, I good either way on the Brad Pitt mask.
Keep the new intro but film it again wearing a slimming body compression vest to hide that developing gut. 🤭
Pin of shame

@snowballil3133 no, you would have an entrance on every floor of a dystopia rce wants to create. So it would be same skyscraper but with 3 entrances and no crossing between 3 class-levels.

Trying to replicate the line is the most architect-like project I can think of
13:41 I'm surpised to hear Matt didn't know you could demolish stairs, I'm pretty sure he's done it once before
...or maybe a few times
They have to bring resources to the line, so storage, Science, housing, breeding pods, should all be contained in the line. Resources can be gathered outside of the line such as farms, foresters, industrial power area.
You could make two levels, with metal platforms, keeping the mob below the rich beavers, so they can only dream about sunshine ;P!
18:58 like paddy... Guess the beaver is planting a _log_
We need 1 hour long of timberborn vids
Line would require a lot of clever irrigation so take your time and try to avoid incidents for now ;p
you really need to talk to the boys at gamer soap for your beaver soap. this is a certified spoonkid classic.
keep the intro, handsome-faced fella.
I like the rock intro.
I would also appreciate a "hello architects " intro on 1st April too!
14:19 You should _check_ which buildigns stop water first.
Because I doubt the Stockpiles do. They do look kinda open to me.
I think as long as the line is impressive - maybe multi tiered and looks cool on the inside, then you can support it with w/e you need to make it work from outside :)
Please can you make timberbornes videos more often? I think most of the community would love
we want Timberborn videos more often... pleaseeee!!
THE LINE - Idea: The Line should be your high society district. It should be the only location with good water and green space. All other areas should be bad water, dirt, and manual labor jobs.
*RCE:* [6 logs] We've got some logs.
*Me:* [
I like the rock version of the intro, it takes a funny idea and adds some actual effort to it. I think you should keep the song, I good either way on the Brad Pitt mask.
Per “the Line” and a dystopia:
Put all your fun buildings inside the Line, and all the poor workers outside
you should definitely dinamite a small river through the middle of the line, and divert the aqueduct to do a high level inner river with waterfall
I like the rock version.
Also, I'm surprised you didn't plan the line for the length of the river instead of crossing it.
