    Thanks for the video tutorial. After a "successful" Revell Saturn V (1/144 scale) build, I'm now tackling a Revell Battlestar Galactica (1/4105 scale). I'm a novice, but patience is one of my virtues, and I love to be thorough in researching techniques.

    I really appreciate the quality of your videos! They are to the accurate, to the point, and have given me an appreciation for the Vallejo paints I have in my arsenal. I just used this dry brush on instrument face in my 6x6, came out very nice. Thanks!

    It's half past two and all I want to do right now is start working on my M41 Walker Bulldog but I'm afraid I'll wake the family up with the smell of paint and glue.

    2:24 Which technique superceded dry brushing?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  4 роки тому +4

      Techniques - filters, chipping, oil dot modulation, modulation etc.etc. Days of a simple dark wash and dry brush, long since gone.

    does dry brushing work with lacquer paints?

  • @asian2700
    @asian2700 5 років тому +1

    What colour should you use for dry brushing?
    Is it something metallic like silver,
    A lighter shade of the colour which has raised detail,
    Or is it something else?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  5 років тому +2

      Depends what you want to show. Worn shiny metal - use silver/gunmetal. Dark oxidised metal, then use dark brown. If you want to highlight surface details or contours then use the base colour lightened with off-white, sand, flesh, whichever lightens the tone to what you like. A good tip is to use oil paints just for the dry brushing, if you have any. That way, you can remove anything you don't like with white spirit.

      Scale War Machines thanks. Something I love about the scale modelling community on youtube is they always reply to questions, as other channels rarely reply.

    if I drybrush must I do it on a varnish or straight on the paint?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  7 років тому +1

      Go for it - no need to varnish what's underneath.

    I wanna dry-brushing with tamiya enamel. But i'm afraid all will gonna be ruin if i do dot filtering next.
    Question is, how long i need to wait so tamiya enamel really dry and won't take effect if i do dot filtering next?? Or... Should i do dot filtering first, dry brushing later??

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  4 роки тому +1

      It's fragile stuff, best to seal with an interim coat of varnish or seal with Future/Klear. It's less stable than Humbrol and reactivates quickly even after a long drying period.

      @@scalewarmachines hmmm yeah too bad. Btw i wanna try to use oil color for painting for this technic. Question is, how can i make sure that this paint is suitable, not like tamiya enamel paint that need topcoat after we apply it...

    If drybrushing has gone a bit out of fashion what, in your opinion, has replaced it? I can't think of another technique that would give similar results. Have people just gone over to weathering powders or such like?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  9 років тому +1

      +dan Morgan Drybrushing still has its place but look at any model magazine & you will see that the days of a quick wash & drybrush are over. Now you have modulation, filters, oil paint rendering, chipping, mapping, mud washes, tensocroms, pigments etc. etc. etc. takes a lot longer. On the Char B1 Bis in the video the drybrushing was just the start of a long long process!

      Scale War Machines I see. Maybe I should start a magazine called "Lazy Bastard Modelling". The premiere issue would have articles like "Piles of Plastic: How to put off assembling those kits", "Base Coating and Done for Crying Out Loud!" and "Track Smasher or Why Can't These Be Just One Molded Piece!"
      I doubt it would sell well. LOL.

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  9 років тому +3

      Dan Morgan I do miss the old days of "Lazy Modelling" though - I miss the slightly simpler "Verlinden Way" of finishing if you ever read those great modelling books published years back. So you never know, it may catch on...

    Do you put a seal clear coat on top of the dry brushing?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  5 років тому +2

      Not necessarily, it's really up to you. But it's always best to be a bit cautious. A sealing coat allows you to at least remove anything unwanted or overdone.

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  9 років тому

      +ricardo jose Rodriguez It's a kit bashed Sherman M4A1 ex DD swimming tank in 1:35th scale using the Italeri large hatch M4A1 hull & Tamiya M4A3 turret plus lots of scratch building. To see how we did it, it features in a premium video download on our website or in our premium downloadable article which is cheaper.

    If i'm painting a tank Olive Drab what color should i use to dry brush?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  9 років тому

      Steven Shiflett Hi, just lighten your base coat in OD by adding some off-white or a lighter shade then simply drybrush. You can lighten even further & repeat. Good luck.

      Scale War Machines Would Khaki Drab be a good color? or should i mix something, i work with tamiya paints.

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  9 років тому +1

      Steven Shiflett Yes from the Tamiya range you could use Khaki Drab XF-51 or even for your last pass, use tiny amounts of Khaki FX-49 on your dry brush for sharp highlights or as your final drybrushing highlight..
