    Beautiful analysis of these pressings, I really enjoyed your review. Your delivery is from the heart and rings true. The verbal illustrations are so good, I always want to go to my listening room after watching your videos. My Tull came in today, looking forward to spinning, thanks Michael.

    This was a good one. Im thinking the difference you’re describing might just be down to compression. With analogue just opening up the playing field a bit.
    Just want to put this out there. Im in the us so naturally most of my lps are us press. Tull have a muddled past here with them being on both reprise and chrysalis records. In the case of this lp I’ve heard both. And both are slightly different. Ive noticed this on other us pressings on other labels as well. For instance the difference in several og close to the edge pressings Guess what im trying to say is ultimately every pressing everywhere puts a slight change to the overall sound. Sometimes more than slight. Even if you keep them all og. Say from a 72 pressing to a 75 pressing. Sometimes the 75 beats the 72. Of course that includes whatever you as the listener brings to the table. From your ears to your equipment.
    So og pressings are always good some better than others. Represses are the same. Both vary more than you might think. Ultimately first presses are one of the og versions on lps this old but possibly not the final word. Depending on who’s had a crack at it and how since those days.

    I just dug out my 1st UK press that I had not played for years after watching your review and wow, what a great piece of music. Then, next to where I had this album filed I pulled out another copy : a first German pressing from 1969 which I had forgotten I had, and had never played !
    Michael, you mention in your review the "Slam" that the AP pressing has, and the german pressing had that, so powerful, it really rocked , jumping out of the speakers. I could not believe difference. Punchy, direct . Like all my german pressings of UK originals there is something about the german sound that is like german cars ! Rock Solid, robust. I get the same feeling when I shut the door of my german car !!!
    I will probably get the AP version. For those of you who may be intrigued by the 1st german pressing it has a laminated cover and on the back it has " printed in germany by Carl v. d. Linnepe, 588 Ludenscheid " the pink Island logo is slightly different to the UK

  • @michaelmerinar8355
    @michaelmerinar8355 Рік тому +1

    Thanks for the fairness of comparing it to a first issue UK pressing.
    Long ago, I compared my first U.S. pressing to my friends first UK, and was surprised at how close the sound quality was.
    As usual, the UK cover looked better.
    The originals covers were printed in a matt finish, which I think better represents the look of the actual wood cut print used.
    I think the AP would have a natural advantage, due to the greater information advantage of being cut at 45 rpm, the lower tracking error due to better placement on the disc, and the probable lower noise floor of the RTI pressing.
    p.s. I say “first issue”, because a first pressing would be just that.
    The first pressings of UK Beatles albums, would have a “G” stamped at 3 o’clock in the blank wax.
    The next stamper would have an “R”.
    The letters, or combinations of letters used, would be a code to indicate just how early, or late, the pressing was made.
    It would be interesting to test, on a highly resolving system, such as yours, if differences could be heard between the different stampers.
    I hope that AP will eventually make more affordable 33 1/3 rpm versions of some of their more popular titles, including “Kind of Blue”, with just the nicely made jacket, on regular vinyl.

    IMO a comparison with an Remix of an Album is not fair. It is a Remix from a man with modern intensions to Music. Wilsons mixes has often a more look to the instruments than the voices. It is a matter of taste liking these Remixes. I do.

    Thank you for the time you put into this! Stand Up is a wonderful album, and you have done it justice. One small niggle: the guitarist, Martin Barre, pronounces his last name Barré (Bar RAY), not Bare.

    • @BG-id2cv
      @BG-id2cv Рік тому +1

      Sorry but Martin pronounces his name as BAR not "Bar RAY". The "Bar RAY" misnomer comes from Ian Anderson's stage introductions of Martin, which was embellishing his likely French roots of the name Barre.

    if today's technology were there during the era when these 70s albums were released, of course, all of those would sound like the Steven Wilson / analogue production mixes in the first place... years from now ( as now how the technology is advancing now), someone would come up with more advanced mixes and today's mixes would become obsolete and would sound muddy when compared..just a far out thought..I love all the mixes, I love to listen to all back to back, all diff experiences

    the Shirley Thomas on the label made me laugh, but I don't mind it either. I kinda feel like little stuff/markings like that are a neat reminder of that particular album as an artifact of time. It lived a lifetime before it found it's way in your collection and in that regard it's fun.

    maybe it's the difference between 33 & 45. But I am curious if it's worth the difference in price for the OG. I opted to pass on the AP for over 70 dollars and get the 1st OG USA pressing in VG+ for around 25 dollars- and have been quite happy with it ( and not changing record every 15 min). that being said i love AP, for me they are the king of Audiophile records all analog thanks for sharing

    I don't seem to care for Steven Wilson's remixes that much. I heard Aqualung and along with many others I don't think it sounds very good. So, I'm not surprised at all that the AP pressing is much better. What you are hearing in the AP is partially because of the LOVELY work of Kevin Gray! I also made a point a while ago to acquire the 1st UK pressing but I don't have the AP.

    Nice video! For me, even though This Was is the band's first album, the Jethro Tull legacy really begins with Stand Up. I was really hoping that Chaddy-cakes at A.P. would choose to release Stand Up as a UHQR; and maybe someday he will. In the meantime I'm glad to have this new release. What did you do to get the outer sleeve on the Steven Wilson remix jacket and still allow the boys to stand up when you open the gatefold? I've got several different versions of this brilliant record on vinyl (U.S. original Reprise two-tone label, repress Reprise tan label, repress Chrysalis green label, repress Chrysalis blue label, S.W. remix Chrysalis green label and now the A.P. 45 RPM) of this great record where I'd look to do the same. Great review,comparison Michael,
    Steven Wilson remixes are solid enough releases Aqualung one of his best.
    Yes remixes were pretty good,King Crimson okay.
    Now although you have the original on pink label from 1969 Michael,it would be interesting to hear the pink rim island from 1970/71.
    All the pink rim records I have sound amazing,Roxy,Cat Stevens, ELP to name just three.
    AP version is cut at 45 rpm which is definitely going to help it beat the original.
    More dynamics,going to track better,no worries with any distortion as it doesn’t have to go near the label.
    A great effort by Analogue Productions both in presentation & sonically.

    In the USA we had the green Chrysalis label - assuming since this was done here Chrysalis probably still has the rights to it. IMHO Steven Wilson's work is way overrated. I _would_ say he improved Aqualung, which (at least the US version) was rather dodgy. However, he's absolutely ruined XTC's Dukes Of Stratosphear, to name just one. I pretty much avoid those whenever possible. Somehow he manages to sterilize everything. And I wish I had thought to "stamp" my records back in the 70's. Maybe I would still have my original pressing of Stand Up, which was "borrowed" when I was in college. My AP Stand Up just arrived, so I've got the tubes warming up and a bottle of 8 year old bourbon waiting in the wings...

      Have to disagree. The only album where I think Wilson doesn't provide a valuable alternative is with the newer release of Broadsword and the Beast. Other than that, what he's done has been revelatory. Of course, they're new mixes, so don't retain all the characteristics of the originals, but then if they did, what would be the point? I mean, in this very video, the reviewer says the AP version "sounds different" to the very original. It's just a matter of degrees.
