    Hi Barry. Very nice variation to the CDC & Elk pattern. One of my favourite all-round dry fly patterns really. I agree with your thoughts that the original is a bit "fragile" - gonna try your version :-). Nice work!

    Thank you Barry - a nice simple pattern that should be perfect for imitating those tiny gray sedges that I see mid-summer. Question: Why did you use a split-thread approach where a regular dubbing-loop would be faster and stronger? I use split-thread loops to form sparse collars/hackles on small flies where bulk is a concern. Back in the days when 3/0 was a "normal" tying thread I would use a split thread most of the time, considering the fine threads typically used these days a dubbing loop works well for most flies. Being an old guy, I still prefer the 3/0 for flies size 12 or larger - find that 2 wraps of waxed thread holds just as well as the dozen wraps needed with the thin thread. But that is what I was taught - to avoid bulk, plan your wraps in advance and keep them to a minimum, use half-hitches to increase durability. ATB Barry! Hank

      Hi Hank, Thanks. When spinning light delicate materials such as CDC it's much easier and as strong to split the thread. When spinning heavier materials though, such as rabbit fur or deer hair, its better to use a dubbing loop of heavier thread.

    Lovely pattern, Barry. can I ask you what scissors you use here ? Looking for good ones but not sure what to choose. Thank you so much.

      Hi Andrea, thanks. The scissors here are Dovo Embroidery scissors. They are quite expensive but very, very good especially for deer hair. www.amazon.com/Dovo-Embroidery-Scissor-Stainless/dp/B00ZRXS5K2

    Hey Barry,
    Why won’t my cdc elk hair caddis float?
    Do I have to treat them with cdc oil? Watershed? Shimazaki? Or is it just poor quality cdc?
    Thanks

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  5 років тому

      Hi, are you using dyed CDC ? What kind of elk are you using, that should be floating on it's own!! Sounds like you should re visit the drawing board i'm afraid!

    • @flydryriver4966
      @flydryriver4966 5 років тому +1

      The feather bender I am using dyed cdc, the elk hair I’m using is from nature’s spirit the premium stuff which is meant to be their best stuff.
      I am not sure why it’s sinking with the cdc, when I tie a normal elk hair caddis they float fine, I am tying the cdc with the stem. I thought maybe it was just not good quality cdc.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  5 років тому

      If its Natures Spirit it should be good stuff, are you using a dry fly hook? The CDC can be warm dyed, this removes everything that is good about CDC. Many companies are now warm dying CDC and the treating it with silicone , which kinda defeats the point of using CDC!

      The feather bender I am using 1180 daiichi hooks size 12,14,16,18 and 20 and tiemco 212tr hooks size 17 and 19
      Nature’s spirit elk hair is awesome stuff no doubt all my normal elk hair caddis turn out perfect.
      I think it’s the cdc as well (I had that bad felling as soon as they all sunk), I got 7 boxes of the stuff as well, so I am not really happy, I guess I’ll be making a lot of cdc nymph’s in the not to distance future.
      Are you using Marc Petitjean cdc?
      I know Polish quills cold dye their cdc.
      Thanks for answering all my questions.
