Just started building bows 3 months ago, never even touched a bow before that. It's thanks to you and your videos! 4 successful board bows, just ordered some Osage from 3rivers. It's time to move up!
There are. Many traditional organizations are working HARD to get more in many states, join your local or state wide trad bowhunting organization and help lobby and show up to get more. Oregon has more than one trad only season.
Clay, thank you so much for carrying on a tradition that has been really inspiring to watch. I grew up with traditional archery but you make it a real treat to show it with your videos. I'm a fan of yours and it makes my day when I can watch one of your videos.
I can only add to these comments, I enjoyed everything about this video. It was entertaining, informative, exciting, beautiful editing with well placed camera cuts, great music selection and timing. Well done!
AWESOME VIDEO! thanks. I love building bows but im a terrible hunter I have only had the chance to shoot at some grouse which I missed horribly, I love being out there with my self bow but I also realize I may not ever have the chance to loose an arrow at a big game but its awesome seeing it done, great job
Very cool video - definitely the best of this type I've ever seen! Really great to see that this type of craftsmanship, and respect for the taking the life of an animal still exists.
Hi clay nice bow. I need advice from you not many want to help me i am busy building a recurve take down bow and want to know if i want my bow to be 62 inches tip to tip riser 17 inches limb pad 4 inches how long must the limb be where i have to cut it off?
Great video Clay. I have learned so much from you in the short time I have followed you. You are a great teacher and communicator. You uncomplicated a lot of information on shooting traditional archery.
Met you several years ago at a rendezvous in Rigby, Idaho. You had not lived in Idaho very long-a game warden here. Neither had I. Both from the south. We kept in touch briefly and you sent me pictures of a giant black bear you killed with a flintlock, “front end loader”. You moved on. Great! Hated that we lost touch, though. I am just sorry that these videos do not show us the person you truly are. Building bows is one thing, but, what you have achieved in the traditional archery world is epic. I really want to make a bow but I am hesitant because I like shorter bows 52”-58” I like 55 lb draw it seems that the bows are longer than 58” to get that weight. So is it possible to get to my desired draw weight in say a 58” bow?

There are some familur places in the beginning of the video, like the northeast corner of the Rutter farm where you are splitting the logs . We are going ahead with the members camp out , sure hatted calling off OJAM this spring.
Question is there any way to speed up the drying process such as a dehydrator or something along those lines? Or would it damage the integrity of the bow?
Ok, here is the deal. Osage costs too much for me to participate. I love building bows from Osage or Yew. They are, like, want to be a bow! But, getting a stave is way too time consuming and way to expensive. I have even bought some sawn Osage, but it all has to be backed. Very frustrating. Good video, as always.
Lester, you might check on Billy Berger's website. There's a video there on making what is referred to as "whitewood" bows, hickory I think is one of those. Apparently he has collaborated with someone who has the knowledge to make great shooting bows out of some of the more common woods via heat treating. Haven't seen the video, just happened to notice it while on his channel. Might help you out. What part of the country do you live in?
Lester, pretty good bows can be made from lots of different woods. Right now is the time to collect them too. If the sap is up the bark can be stripped pretty easy from elm and hickory and you already have a good back. Check out THE BENT STICK. I think it's a book by Jim Hamm. I've made some pretty good bows from black locust and hickory. Just make the bows a little longer and the limbs wider. Preshape the bow then make sure to let it thoroughly dry before you tiller. Hang the tips of the limbs from the rafters, the back of the bow up, and hang a weight from the middle of the handle. As it drys it should force some backset. Hickory is easy to shape with heat.
Clay I am disappointed I didn't buy your book sooner. After finishing my second whitewood ( Ash) Flatbow and backing with Rawhide after many many hours of novice work on Thursday it, after 10 mesmerising shots developed a compression fracture. Today I read page 52 of your book... Thank you for taking the time to share your hard earned knowledge. You must put huge amounts of time in and for myself in a wee Highland village backing on to forest I feel I struck gold when your book arrived. I can't thank you enough. On another note even the comments on here give courage and support without knowing it to novices like me and so many others, so to the other comments made by other folk " Thanks ." Stay focused on your goals.
Um, the video "title" says recurve bow, but your own introduction says longbow. Clearly, you're building the latter. Shouldn't this discrepancy be corrected?
I live in east Texas and I have a friend who hand makes recurve bows. I've just set and watched for hours from the log to the finished bow and I'm amazed everytime he finishes one. I've taken wild pigs in the upper 300lb range with his bows. I have a couple compound bows and they shoot very nice but its something about shooting a handmade bow that you just dont get from a alloy body bow. Enjoyed every minute.......thank you sir
What magnificent country you have access to, nothing like that in South Australia, where I live. If there was, we wouldn't be allowed to hunt it anyway. I made a bow out of Tasmanian Oak, but when tillering, I got a little thin in one spot and it developed a hinge and broke. It also developed a fair bit of set, unsuitable timber. Have you made a bow using Rock Maple, as this is my next option, will it work?
I've also been asked to build a 30-40# short bow for a woman to shoot ,she's 5'1"tall ,I've never made a bow for someone so dainty, should pose a interesting challenge.
Amazing Video Clay! May I ask about how far the elk was away from you the Moment you shot? And what do you consider your max range when hunting with a selfbow? Thanks!
This is awesome this is real hunting I barely hunt with a rifle anymore and mainly use a compound bow but I’m getting into recurves and practicing building my own bows, obviously nothing special yet but I hope to make something to kill small game with
Clay I cant thank you enough. My board bow shoots! My question is, my arrow shelf is a bit off center and causing bad arrow flight. Should I take more wood out? I'm afraid it will break.
I cant wait to build one of these someday, but I have to ask you, when you first started building selfbows, how many staves did you go through before you had your first useable bow?
I shot my first bow about a half dozen times before it broke. After that they didn’t break but just didn’t perform very well. They got better as time went on.
The first longbow I ever shot was a hickory self bow backed with diamondback skin that a friend made so I could shoot at the first ever g.l.l.i. (Great Lakes Longbow Invitational) a couple of miles from my home in Berrien Springs, Michigan, I think that was 1996. Of corse I’ve been to many Compton, Michigan Bowhunters, & just plain old 3-D soots there sense then. But nothing has ever had the joy of the feeling of that hickory bow after I got the brace hight set just right. It went from teeth rattling to smooth as butter with just a few twists of the string. Thanks for bringing back a cherished memory that I haven’t thought of for years. Also if you haven ever been you need to make it out to the Compton shoot it’s usually the 2nd week in June (except for this year of course) its always a ball.
hello there are some questions that I want to ask you, what tree is it from? And what is the fabric that you put on the bow and what is its function? greetings from Argentina
Damn, Clay! Right now you are the envy of just about every real man in the world! Good on you brother! I wish I had just a piece of your life! Keep 'em coming!

There should be an Old school bowhunting season for BG with no sights purely traditional, just like there is a muzzleloader season.

You place a scale on the string and draw it to the draw length.
