the way she differentiated each camera in a simpler way is the best, she did not had to really say all the technical aspects of each model. great job Julia! because of that, I am now gonna get the a7c because I am not a pro and just need a good camera that I can bring daily for content creation. I do not even need to do pro work.
The A7c has greatly exceeded my expectations as a travel/everyday camera, and paired with the Samyang 35mm f/2.8 makes for the lightest full frame option out there.
Sold A7C and got A7IV - no regrets. Finally, workable APS-C mode if needed. Dual card, 10 bit, WAY better autofocus, Active Stab, Dedicated switch between Stills and Movies for run-and-gun shoots. And the list is going on.
I'm 6'1 and I find the A7C plenty comfortable, I'm admittedly not shooting continuously for hours. I mainly use my camera for family and travel photography and it was a perfect transition from my Fuji X100. I really stayed away from FF cameras because they always just felt so big and cumbersome. The A7C is just a slightly heavier APS-C body but with the advantage of Sony's incredible FF glass. I mostly have it paired with the 24 1.4 GM and 85mm 1.8 and I can fit these both in a Hex mini ranger cross body. It really is in my opinion the best compromise for hobbyists looking for a great walk around camera. Is the A7IV a "better" camera...sure. Is it the best camera for me though, no I don't think so.
The A7c is honestly my favorite camera I've owned. I was nervous about giving up external dials, but there are plenty of options for custom setup to overcome that. With a smaller lens (I prefer the 35/2.8 ZA), it's just a hair bigger than pocketable. I head out the door with it every day. Something of an aside worth mentioning- vintage lenses. The A7c is so awesome for adapting old lenses. They're typically much smaller than today's offerings, so pairing them with the A7c form factor makes for an absolutely perfect shooting experience. Focus peaking + magnify + ISO performance.. it's a manual super powered setup.
If you have A7c, do remember to update the firmware. Sony has brought down some features from A7IV to A7c, such as animal eye AF in video and USB streaming, so there is even less reason to upgrade to A7IV. Despite having similar spec with A7iii on paper, the autofocus on A7c is a noticable step up, there is not much between A7c and A7IV. All that convince me that there is a more optimised and powerful processor in A7c when compare to A7iii.
A7c have a great features ! But I prefer a7lll 2 cards slot and better viewfinder but compared this two cameras with a7 IV the best improves are in the 10 bits 4:2:2
@@bennywongbbb No bird-eye focus, but it you point it at a bird, it will most likely still focus on the bird's head (tested), so you are not losing much.
Great comparison video, and I know it's meant to be quick, but I think quite a few important differences were missed. As Julia said, the a7c does have fewer designated custom buttons, but there are still several buttons you can customize. The big difference is in the number of dials. The a7c has two (if you count the back dial) plus an EV dial. the a7IV has three dials plus and a customizable EV dial for a total of four dials. As a manual shooter the EV dials on my a7c and a7sIII see little action, and I'd love to be able to have them control white balance instead. The mode dial on the a7IV is better as well, allowing you to have separate camera settings for video and photos. Switching between video and photo modes on the a7c affects the settings on both modes, which is a real pain. Also the menu system on the a7IV is much better than the a7c, and uses touch navigation. The a7c has characteristics that suit me better personally. As a left-eye shooter I prefer the rangefinder body. Also while the grip is shallower, I find it to be more comfortable, secure, and stable with a handstrap than the a7sIII/a7IV style body without one. The a7c is a great, less expensive option if you don't need any of the specific features of the a7IV and are planning to use the smaller f1.8 or f2.8 primes or f4 zooms. The a7c is a good choice for someone jumping from aps-c bodies to full frame, but the a7IV may be better suited for people upgrading from an older full frame camera.
Thank you and yes I agree, I LOVE that they made the EV dial fully customisable on the A7IV - I have it set to a white balance shortcut. The settings staying the same between photo and video mode I agree can be a bit cumbersome. But I do prefer the mode dial of the A7C that has video and M right next to each other compared to the A7III where it's a few clicks away from each other instead, so I'm glad they improved on that. Also the menu! That's a tough one because I know the new menu is kinda better but I have the old one memorised so it throws me off using the new one on the A7IV haha I've spent 3 years with the old menu on the A7III =\
This was excellent, Julia and really, the first time I have ever felt that ,hmm, maybe I should consider the a7iv! I have the a7c which I love using so much that my a7iii is not getting any use these days! I really appreciate the fact that you are 'listening'' to your viewers and responding to their requests. Thank you ( and to Dan, as well!)
This was a great comparison. I was leaning towards the A7C up until about a week ago and am now considering the A7IV. The A7C is 2 years older, and since the price has not changed much since it was introduced, it seems likes the A7IV for the additional $$ os a more future proof camera with the updated sensor, true touch screen, dual slot and better hold especially with longer telephoto lenses.
The A7C vlog footage looks excellent. Reminded me that vlogging was one of the reasons I bought the camera but haven't gotten around to it because shooting everything else is just so fun.
I thought I would love the A7C for the compact size, but for me it just didn’t feel right. The grip was uncomfortable and I have pretty small hands, the viewfinder was very limiting and I really missed that front dial. The worst thing, I found was unless you were only buying really small lenses everything else looked and felt really off balance. I have traded it in and just bought an A7iv which immediately felt loads better. An expensive mistake, but we live and learn 🤦🏼♀️
Yeah the front dial is a bit weird to get used to, I still sometimes reach for it before remembering it's on the back haha. I'm glad you're happy with the A7IV now though!
I have the a7iii and the A7riii and I’m still proud of using both of them. I even have a long shutter count life on it and both of those cameras fulfilled my needs
Julia, thanks a lot for this comparison, I loved the video and the explanations! Please make a video about your wedding photography as well, I would be interested in the lenses you are using, poses, compositions, it would be nice to see how you handle a wedding. Thanks a lot in advance! Take care and have a lovely day! 💕
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it. I will see what kind of wedding videos I can do.. I don't really want to share my real couples here on UA-cam, but I can definitely create some couple photoshoots to mimic what I do at weddings :)
For me the choice was easy, a7iv. Unless I hold the camera low I always use the EVF. The EVF on a7c is even worse than a6500. It is small and you can't use an eye cup (standard on all a6xxx cameras).
I don't use the EVF that often to be honest, but yes I agree that on top of the smaller grip, the small EVF would be a bit straining on the eyes for long shoots.
Recently used a Fuji x100t to take snaps at a friend's bday. The casual look and small size really set people at ease. The pics were great but they really fell apart at iso6400. I'd be happy to have an a7C mkii which has a better evf and a 1/8000 shutter speed instead of 1/4000 shutter speed. A FF is just so much better for low light and the images are super crisp in comparison.
I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the A7C II. With the A7C I think they really wanted to push that it was the world's smallest FF camera with IBIS.. with the mark 2 version, I'm sure they'll keep the small form factor but maybe with a little more leeway for make room for improved features.
Hoping the a7cii will have a full shutter mechanism. The efcs isn't great. I personally still like Fuji more for travel, esp when travelling without laptops. The ability to edit raws in-camera is amazing.
Ok, I chose between the two, ended up buying the 7C, but in retrospect I would have taken the 7IV... But done is done, just have to learn to live with the 7C for a while

I would like to see more photo comparation for different types of photos like macro, wide angle landscape, portrait, indoor, or low light. I bought a7C and tried it for a couple of weeks doing all that and was very disappointed in the quality of photos I got (compare to my older spny cameras that I was shooting for comparation - older sony hands off got me better looking photos, especially dynamic range, auto-focus (and auto-focus tracking, close up/macro), level of details (especially in low light, but even with ISO 100 it was unimpressive). Sony a7c was a HUGE disappointment for me as a sony fan. I never had to return Sony camera before (And Im using Sony for the last 8 years and own multiple cams). So now I'm hesitant to buy sony a7IV because some people say its very similar to a7c (which is something I don't want)
A7C replaced my A6400 when I decided just to keep everything FF. Paired with the 20 1.8 is fun compact setup. I really just wished there was a C1 and/or C2 button.
I think the choice here is really dependent on the money and the needs (Video excluded in this reasoning). The features of the A7C definitely sounded interesting to even those with an A7III (or looking at either of those two when buying new), but the missing wheels, buttons, card slot and having a generally higher price already made it a hard choice when we didn't even had the A7IV yet. The newer AF and jpg engine also stand out compared to the A7III, but also lack behind the A7IV. The menus not even to mention (though I never found them to be too awful to use). Those are the things most casual users will see most of and thus care about: accessibility and pleasing images out of automatic mode... + price. Since comparing the A7C vs the A7III was already a close battle with head to head trade-offs, the A7IV is definitely the "better" choice, but maybe not the more affordable or smart one. This shifts for power users of course, where the priority of the factors shift. So all well explained and glad to see this reflected review / comparison! Definitely helps those less into tech and gear details.
Yep I completely agree and this is a great summary. The A7C, A7III and A7IV are all great and capable cameras, all with their own pros and cons that really depend on the user and their needs. I'm hoping these 2 comparison videos I made can help anyone out who is stuck deciding which one is right for them!
Obviously a7 IV is better, more professional. But that little a7c have great photo/video quality. I use it as B cam for a7siii and i love it. Its mostly on gimbal so i dont mind ergonomics and useless EVF. In that vlog test with pp off a7c looked much more pleasing.
3:28 - i need to present this to my wife! I was accused by my wife that i make her look wide even with telephoto lens 🤣 i guess i’ll get a b-cam soon 😂
You can shoot in a7c 1/8000 you just have to change over to silent shutter which for outdoor use where you would need that fast of a shutter isn’t a problem. 😬 FYI
Unlike cameras such as the A7III/A7IV, the A7C does not have a mechanical first curtain - only a rear mechanical curtain. So even when using the mechanical shutter on the A7C, you do have limitations with artificial lighting and fast motion due to the missing mechanical first curtain.
I’m confused now. I have an A7c, which I thought always uses the mechanical shutter unless disabled (setting the silence mode). Then, in electronic mode it can go up to 1/8000 shutter speed. But maybe I’m wrong.
What she meant is that the A7C doesn't have a mechanical front curtain shutter so the electronic front curtain (EFCS) is always on. The advantage of using EFCS is it mitigates shutter shock. The only disadvantages of having the EFCS is slower flash sync speed and bokeh quality at shutter speeds of fster than 1/2000. Banding under artificial lights is not an issue (unlike full electronic shutter)
Yes to what Philip responded! Unlike cameras such as the A7III/A7IV, the A7C does not have a mechanical first curtain - only a rear mechanical curtain. So even when using the mechanical shutter on the A7C, you do have limitations with artificial lighting and fast motion due to the missing mechanical first curtain.
I'm stuck between these two right now. I'm not sure which to go with for my first professional camera. I want to vlog and use for basketball games. I've been using my gopro 9 but definitely want to use a Sony with more features. Which would you recommend? I will be recording basketball indoors and outdoors, day and night, same with vlogging. Thank you for your help
Hi Julia. I have both camera and they are both amazing. I do like the a7iv for more professional work when you need more color grading. Other than that, they pair really nicely together.
I love your videos Julia! A lot of content, easy to understand explanations, great comparisons, great environments and your personal touch, if you ask me I think the Sony A7IV is the best camera 📸 for everything 😃😃😃
Thanks @Julia Trotti. Got a7c after watching your video mainly for travel/leisure/family vacations. I am wondering where is the link to video about shortcuts on a7c?
a7c would fit 100% of my needs, but can't help but contemplate the a7iv, haha! And whoa, that rig on Dan's shoulder, what a massive production you all have there! ;)
Thanks for the comparison. I´m thinking about geting the a7IV as main body for wedding photography and the a7C as second body. I agree that the a7C is not profesional enough for being the main body, but do you think it would be good as second camera? Thanks!
I haven't made my purchase yet, but your video helped me a lot to get a better idea of what to choose. I want it for educational construction and daily use, and the budget I want to allocate is enough to buy the A7C with the Tamron 28-75 G2 lens, but if I want to buy the A7 IV , I can only have the 28-70mm (default kit lens), and that's me Very confused. (i need help) .Thank you Julia and also Dan.
Yeah, i asked for this video & finally many thanks. I was going to buy A7iv for wedding actually, but in here (India), it's near $1000 more compared to A7c, so was waiting for ur video. & I think I'll go for A7c for now, but i really liked A7iv ☺️. Hey Julia again thanks . ❤️
The single SD card slot in the a7C makes it hard to consider. I'd rather have an a7 III even though it doesn't have the real-time tracking. Obviously, the a7 IV is just better in every way, but it's more expensive and not even really available on the used market yet.
The grip statement doesn't make any sense , using a7c grip is super convenient when you want to hold something you just hold it, also the extra detail 34 megapixel is a great comparison sticking out for the a7c
I’ve bought both and sold A7IV, it’s auto focus is more sticky in object tracking and eye detection and it’s noticeable faster. The new menu has more features than A7C. However, I’m not a professional, don’t have expensive photo software, I use USC cable download photo directly to iPad Pro Photo, unfortunately IOS doesn’t support A7IV RAW and some lenses don’t work on A7IV (e.g., Tamron 35mm). In addition, I shoot still photo only so video feature is not relevant to me. So, A7C is fine. The only thing I’m not happy with it is the tiny EVF and that flip out screen (prefer Nikon Z9 screen that stays straight with the subject).
So honestly if that is going to be my first professional camera, would you recommend me to pick up a Sony a6600, or A7III/A7C/A7IV? The point is of course the earn a little on my hobby, and my hobby is a nature-city photography (trees, flowers, birds - in a mid range distance, some buildings...) :) What would be your recommendation Julia?
A7c isn't just a traveling camera I actually filmed campaigns at a 10k-50k$ AUD in marketing filmed and photographed budget worth with the sony a7c camera and decent 85mm and 50mm lenses I can confidently laugh 🤣 at the fact that vloggers just think they can sell you the cameras they want you to buy by just calling a high caliber camera a "traveling camera"...it's a lot of perception marketing here in the video and we are living in an Era when the real eye can't tell the real difference between the new sony camera releases moreover whats actually true, let me remind you that since the 1970's the actual camera size remained the same and there will always a new release every year and they will always need vloggers to undervalue the last year's release.
That's what I noticed too. The video and photos look so identical between these cameras, but vloggers keep saying the A7C is just a "travel camera" because of the 1 SD card and lack of buttons/grip. I honestly think these two cameras perform the same in the real-world, and at $1800 the A7C is a huge $700 cheaper. I don't think most people need the A7IV at $2500 when nobody will even tell the difference between your work.
Thank you so much for this great video! I managed to pick up the Sony a7c, brand new without kit lens for around 1800 USD (with Sony campaign). I was considering the Sony a7 Iv but In my country it cost around 3175 USD, and it was simply too much money when it was my first full frame camera. Glad that I got it and it’s more than enough for a hobbyist!
How to shoot in manual mode without second wheel on a7c? I mean it's clear how but I think it's a flaw for those who prefer manual mode and control shutter/aperture using wheels.

You can shoot 1/8000th of a second by switching to silent mode. Works great for outdoor shoots.
It's great outdoors! But when you start getting into inside lighting, it could be an issue
Great info; thanks
Didn't expect to find you here. Lol!
A7C replaced my A6400 when I decided just to keep everything FF. Paired with the 20 1.8 is fun compact setup. I really just wished there was a C1 and/or C2 button.
Which brand is 20 f1.8 lens?
THE COMMENT I LOOKED FOR, i want to upgrade from a6300!
What lens would u reccommend for the a7c? Love taking photos of my kids but only have the lens kit
Awhh thanks for sharing 😃
Obviously a7 IV is better, more professional. But that little a7c have great photo/video quality. I use it as B cam for a7siii and i love it. Its mostly on gimbal so i dont mind ergonomics and useless EVF.
In that vlog test with pp off a7c looked much more pleasing.
3:28 - i need to present this to my wife!
I was accused by my wife that i make her look wide even with telephoto lens 🤣 i guess i’ll get a b-cam soon 😂
What filter do you use for videos and photos? Love your work. Thank you..
Love my A7C, the A74 simply isn’t big enough of an upgrade for me to trade up for it. The FX3 for video on the other hand…
Did you update to the new firmware in your A7IV? It's supposed to fix the Eye AF problem where some shots aren't in focus
You can shoot in a7c 1/8000 you just have to change over to silent shutter which for outdoor use where you would need that fast of a shutter isn’t a problem. 😬 FYI
So when you are not in silent shutter mode, the a7c uses mechanical shutter?
Thank you for mentioning that! I am very very rarely in silent shutter 😅
Unlike cameras such as the A7III/A7IV, the A7C does not have a mechanical first curtain - only a rear mechanical curtain. So even when using the mechanical shutter on the A7C, you do have limitations with artificial lighting and fast motion due to the missing mechanical first curtain.
@@Rajiv27 when it is in silent mode it can go up to 1/8000
@@juliatrotti no worries not a lot of people know that but yes the camera can do 1/8000 in silent mode
We in the same boat my bro lol
Very informative, thank you. I learned a lot.
Thank you!
Hi Julia. I have both camera and they are both amazing. I do like the a7iv for more professional work when you need more color grading. Other than that, they pair really nicely together.
I agree, that is something I could have mentioned that the A7C would be a good 2nd camera to an A7III/IV :)
I love your videos Julia! A lot of content, easy to understand explanations, great comparisons, great environments and your personal touch, if you ask me I think the Sony A7IV is the best camera 📸 for everything 😃😃😃
Thank you so much!
thanks for the video!
Thanks @Julia Trotti. Got a7c after watching your video mainly for travel/leisure/family vacations. I am wondering where is the link to video about shortcuts on a7c?
Thanks!!! I wish you would have compared the two cameras for night photography and low light conditions.
a7c would fit 100% of my needs, but can't help but contemplate the a7iv, haha!
And whoa, that rig on Dan's shoulder, what a massive production you all have there! ;)
Haha yeah it's an A7sIII under all the extras Dan's added to his kit!
i dont know why, but internal mic on both cameras sounded waaaay clearer than your mic :O
Thanks for the comparison. I´m thinking about geting the a7IV as main body for wedding photography and the a7C as second body. I agree that the a7C is not profesional enough for being the main body, but do you think it would be good as second camera? Thanks!
Yes I think it would be a good 2nd cam!
@@juliatrotti Thank you!! 😃
Im also In the same kind of situation between the two.I believe is better to purchase the A7C and get good lenses Tamron rather than A7IV
Gr8 Comparison Video 📷📸
was woundering what program you where using when you edit the picuer during thr photo comparison?
I use Sony a7IV.In long exposure I have colours posterization ;This is happening when I use iso between 50 -100 and aperture between f8 and f22.
Happy you enjoyed the video!
@@juliatrotti oh, absolutely Julia. ❤️
How's your A7c
@@joshuahope3967 still Rocking every single day 😉
I’m thinking about a7c madam thanks 🙏 for nice introduction about it 🙏🙏🥰❤️
I’ve been using a Leica for weddings for year. I don’t worry about one card slot.
Also, A7IV has the new sony menu with a full touch screen display which you can navigate through the menu with it.
A7c has personality 😊
Does a7c focuses on eye or tracks the subject while shooting in 120 or 100fps ???
Price is the most crucial point for customer rest all features can be adjusted
Bottom line: A7IV is better but bigger. A7C it's good enough and compact.
Thx you for this vidéo!!
Very helpful. I love my a7c.
what is the best flash for Sony- Godox v860iii or Sony hvl60rm?
Should I buy an A7C or wait for the Mark II? 😊
Doesn't the A7IV have electronic first curtain shutter as an option? Does it only have either full mechanical or full electronic?
i wanna buy a FE 70-200 GM ii but i have a A7C, its a problem??? blessings from PERU!
At the end I decided to buy both. God bless you all.
You Need internees???
Any Training Classes Available Online?
A7IV is the way to go..for me..looked like the rolling shutter almost doesn't exist on the A7SIII..thanx
I love A7c, though sometimes it goes out of focus, not sure if it’s from the lens.
Nice video🖤
Love from bangladesh❤
Are you so cute☺️
The single SD card slot in the a7C makes it hard to consider. I'd rather have an a7 III even though it doesn't have the real-time tracking. Obviously, the a7 IV is just better in every way, but it's more expensive and not even really available on the used market yet.
They are similar, i just like my A7C because of it's look when i use it with smallrig cage.
A7C is able use 1/8000th of second, but only in slient mode - only electronic shutter. So outside, in full sun it can be useful.
Unless you want to do flash photography in bright sunlight with the a7C ;)
@@classicboy97 you car use ND filter then :)
The grip statement doesn't make any sense , using a7c grip is super convenient when you want to hold something you just hold it, also the extra detail 34 megapixel is a great comparison sticking out for the a7c
07:20 was this footage color graded??? or not? please answer..............
That was all ungraded for the vlogging shots!
My lil 7c rocks 😍❤️
make video on a7c vs 6400, both are best but which is better
I have the a7c. The a7IV can’t be bought right now due to lack of semiconductors. Have still seen a7c’s for sale…
So honestly if that is going to be my first professional camera, would you recommend me to pick up a Sony a6600, or A7III/A7C/A7IV?
The point is of course the earn a little on my hobby, and my hobby is a nature-city photography (trees, flowers, birds - in a mid range distance, some buildings...) :)
What would be your recommendation Julia?
All I notice though is you're pretty on both cameras.
@@Inazuchi precisely ✨
how can i buy it, that's so expensive in my country :(
what camera does your cameraman use?
A7siii
@@juliatrotti thank you . happy shooting! :)
Thank you, so glad you liked it. And I agree, the A7C is such a great camera for that, especially with the price difference.
good comparision
How to shoot in manual mode without second wheel on a7c? I mean it's clear how but I think it's a flaw for those who prefer manual mode and control shutter/aperture using wheels.
You can change the back wheel to be an aperture control. I have a video going through my A7C setup + shortcuts.
