I swear, Skull Kid’s screaming is probably one of my favorite Zelda sound effects ever. Because his screaming is just so powerful in a way. He actually sounds like a child in agony and suffering the power within the cursed mask.
I've played a crapload of emotional games, but I've rarely, if at all, found scenes within games as awe-inspiring and epic as THIS ONE. So much emotion. So much tension. So much darkness, yet so much hope. This is why Majora's Mask is my all time favorite game.

What many people may not realize is that in the adult timeline (the one where Link pulls out the Master Sword in OOT) is that Termina was crushed under the moon's impact. Link was sleeping in the Temple of Light for seven years, so by the time he awoke, Termina had long since been destroyed. Yet another way in which the Adult timeline is much darker overall.
I assumed that since Ganondorf got the Triforce of Power in that timeline, things went differently so that for whatever reason the Moon never started to fall. I'm pretty sure Skull Kid just hid in the Lost Woods the whole time. Plus, it's possible the Happy Mask Salesman never got hold of Majora's Mask.
Mr Rieper True, because you can still see that same Skull Kid in the Lost Woods after Link wakes up as an adult, so he never left wandering to find Termina.
Kwatcher100 The child timeline would've still been darker. We know that in the Zelda universe, alternate timelines exist, which means that with every trip Link made back in time, another version of Termina was left to it's destruction.
It's easy to presume that since the Happy Mask Salesman never appears in the future after Link pulled the Master Sword out. And looking at the state of his shop. He was most likely killed during the 7 year gap by Ganondorf's forces. Therefore, he never got the Majora's Mask in the Adult Timeline and it remains where it was, which is also presumed to be underwater along with the rest of Hyrule. Therefore the Skullkid never got it and thus the Portal to Termina had been lost forever in that timeline.
Maybe it’s just me but there’s a very small detail in this scene that just makes the impact even greater. Notice at the beginning of the game Tael tells you where you need to go to awaken the Giants in the order, “Swamp, Mountain, Ocean, Canyon…” and later once you’ve explored them all and play the Oath to Order, they slowly appear one by one, in that order, and not all at once or just at random. Again it’s not a very noticeable detail, but the very way the scene plays out adds to its majesty.
zelda games have totally mastered the art of cutscenes. Especially the n64 era with their perfect use of music and Koji Kondo's incredible ability to create the most specific, fitting and inspiring pieces known to man paired with that humble low-poly look and feel of the games. Zeldawave II has a really nice edit of this scene in it that really captures the awe you feel with the older zelda games.
There is so much meaning to this scene. This whole time, Skull Kid had all the power, nothing could get in his way, nothing could stop him, he always saw Link's efforts as futile. But then.. Link called *them.* The only ones that could stop him. The ones who brought him to this point. But it's impossible, he knows for a fact that he disposed of them, they are imprisoned. All of it, all of it is impossible. But they were coming, just as they always were, the guardians, the ones who were his friends. Knowing this, he panics wildly, overcome by so much, and then he howels into the darkness.

Look where he grabs, look how he shakes - he’s trying to rip off Majora’s Mask in one last act of his own free will. It’s no wonder Majora separates from Skull Kid after this.

What's ironic is that isn't the Skull Kid who is screeching at the sound of the Giants coming, it is the anger of the Mask through him, it is reacting to its plans being interrupted as the ONE POWER able to counter-balance its destruction has arrived to get in the way and possibly stop it
This game was ahead of its time and really challenging at the time without watching walk thru videos a person will find completing this game difficult. Even in this modern age this game is still harder then most. I was stuck on Death Valley for a good 3 or 4 years 😂
I usually don’t like the trope of calling your found friends to help you fight the antagonist but there’s something here that just hits the right spots i don’t know any other game will ever hit
This scene, and a lot of Majora in general, has great presentation. The cuts and characters all move in very impactful ways. It really does demonstrate a mastery of the engine, while also delivering on performance. The way it shows the Giants struggling, and the cut to all of them staring in an almost half-hearted relief as they impede the impact. It's powerful in a way that really doesn't get captured well with more modern scenes. Wind Waker was the closest a more modern Zelda got to emulating these types of body language and expression.
The original scene is better than the remake in so many ways. It's much darker, more ominous. You can feel the weight of the moon from the strain of their bodies; the buckling of their knees. The remake makes it seem as if stopping the moon was nearly painless. Here, you witness the enormous effort, as if their success isn't a sure thing. They stopped it, but they could have just as easily failed to.
The most elusive Zelda finale of all time. I could never get past the day resetting so I never got past the swamp and monkeys. Finally beat it a few years ago 20 years after the fact.

I think this cutscene looks better in this version then in the 3DS remake, cos of the fact that it's almost dawn when the Giants come. Which to me; Visualizes that hope is still remaining and the light at the end of the tunnel is within reach. The red ominous glow in the sky in the 3DS version makes it hard to see them and I think it doesn't do Justice to this scene.

When I was a kid I tried the summoning with just one giant cause I wasn't good enough to get the others yet. Since you don't get a good look at them until the ikana giant, it just looked like a giant, shadowy creature approaching the clock tower. I still remember the watching him try to stop the moon by himself. It was really sad=/ Thankfully I got better and rectified that!

Then you become pissed when two giants are worthless. Only to be stuck Trying to figure out how to beat the Water temple "again" (*looking at you OoT*) and only to cheat by looking through cheat and guide book to suddenly play other games on the console or others. Then come back to Majora's Mask with confidence to finally figure out the Stone Temple bullshit (*it was fucking cool*) and realize how fucking awesome the Stone Temple music is. And then say it's better than Ocarina of Time...THEN BECOME MORE PISSED OFF WHEN YOU'RE TOO WEAK TO FIGHT THE ACTUAL MASK BOSS AND HAVE TO CHEAT AGAIN JUST TO FIND ALL THE MASK TO GET THE DIETY FIERY MASK AND THEN FINALLY BEAT THE GAME.....Seriously this game makes you work for it

Fun fact: One of those giant is the father of Doshin who had his own game on the GameCube called Doshin the Giant.

You don't need the Deity mask to beat the final boss, although it makes it much easier.

I hated that in later releases the music and fps were off sync with each other, kinda ruined the scene.
Lucky to have played the N64 version. Never played the rerelease. Especially now that the emulator of the original has HD mods.
