The second story was set during a massive devastating earthquake in 85 in Mexico City (which was the year I was born, sheer coincidence I promise) and the god that was summoned is an Aztec god
Yeah, I looked this up after I watched it...I was super young when it happened so I vaguely remember it. There's even video online of a morning show being interrupted by the earthquake. Honestly, the earthquake footage leading up to the weirdness freaked me out more than anything in that short.
@@KitsuneRokaku Ayo, so what you need our hearts for man? People already been through a natural disaster, but then you gotta take the hearts? Seems a little excessive to me.
I just realized in the first segment, while the group is out on the boat, at 6:19, if you listen in the background you can hear the bullets being fired at the couple in their tent on land. An eerie detail foreshadowing what we would see later in the film... This segment was good but I wish there was a bit more closure for the undead group. They touch on the idea of this lake turning dead people undead, but they leave it as soon as it's brought up.
Strangely enough, I think this was the most grounded film in the series, in terms of keeping the stories tied to the year and events/fears that transpired during the 80s. Scott Derrickson's segment was my favorite personally; He has a way of filming found footage that is truly eerie... His segment had shades of Sinister in it, and the little nod to The Black Phone was fun...
yeah it was pretty decent. i thought the last one wasn't very good. I'm not a big fan of 2 segments being basically the same story but i also can't say they were bad. and this one had a better wrap around story than most of them in my opinion
camping is scary mostly because it was really popular for a while and people felt safe doing it so horror movies used that as a setting since the usual and safe becoming horrible and dangerous is a big part of how you make horror media scary. Sadly our generation grew up with that lens over our eyes... the current generation will probably have a fear of the suburbs.
Being scared of the suburbs has been a thing since at least Halloween to be fair. A lot of 80s horror movies were about being afraid of something invading the peace of the suburbs.
If it's any consolation for the terror you guys experience during these, you DO in fact make it extremely fun to watch react. This is because both of your chemistry and fun vibes are not only relatable, but they also help my scared-ass brain watch these movies. I find I'm often interested in them, but I am affected in ways similar to how Cody is affected specifically from found footage like this lol It's only because it can have you feel dissociated from grounded reality afterwards. I think you guys said it best, actually! lol Lastly, just wanted to say I love the edits to death. Stay watchin and stay awesome. Thanks for this.
There’s already a theory going around that the lake from No Wake/Ambrosia that the 4 people, and Ruth immortal might be the same lake from Alien abduction slumber party from V/H/S/2 indicating that the kids, and the little dog might have become immortal due to being in the lake.
the "music" in the home invasion tape was so so scary. I've never had to mute a movie before but this one was so unsettling, I literally had to turn my headphones off
The first story reminds me a lot of the movie The Ruins. The people who live/patrol that area isolate a group of people who have made contact with the cursed vine and the ones who didn't turned out fine.
Its a shame...im now all caught up with the series, and with each installment, i feel a little disappointed that there were no call bacs (or should i say, foreshadowing) to other tapes in the other installments...i would have been cool if they revisited some of the other stories to expand on them more. Also, i wished there was more of the "VII" tapes, rather than the total Copy ones...which were kinda weak as a wraparound...
Fantastic reaction as always! You mentioned Sinister - when I watched the Dreamkill story I kept thinking that it reminded me a lot of Sinister, particularly the creepy sound design. I was amazed when I watched the credits and saw it was indeed by Sinister director Scott Derrickson.
So if you listen very closely, you hear the two gun shots while all the other people are on the boat but no one heard it since they were on the water. So creepy.

I enjoyed tjis one and the rory story. I like how they took some analog horror elements. I really enjoyed the 7 one with family of killers. It remind me of a twilight zone episode the original twilight zone. A man who feared death makes a deal with the devil and cant die or feel pain and he eventually tries to find ways, to kill himself cause hes bored eventually his wife dies in an accident and tries to get the electric chair. But instead is sentenced to life in prison and will stay there literally forever until he tells satan just take me. that girl is gonna stay in prison forever she cant die thats a damn curse. thats an awesome ending to it
loved the campy feel for this movie. def shudder making it less brutual with every new movie tho lol. i noticed as the new movies come out they cheekily censor more and more shots compared to vhs1 and 2 when they would play the gore pretty straightforward
@@horrorclips7629 it felt boring to me. Too long and the stories weren’t that interesting obviously my opinion. The through line segment lead up to nothing really, sure a couple people died but it didn’t feel like a cohesive story. Aside from that the segments themselves felt like style over substance. For example the “god of technology” segment felt way too long and did nothing to hook my attention. The only story that really did was the beginning with the boat. When they got shot and were still alive I looked forward to where that would go. It didn’t. Aside from that, the family who kills and shows each other tapes was cool! I would have liked that to be the through line instead and it could be them showing the different depraved thing. Or really anything but instead they just get shot up by the police instantly and all the characters don’t matter. The earthquake one had potential but it only really had one scene worth seeing and that was the collapse before anything “spooky” even happened. What it really lacked was focus and pacing. TLDR: Stories that were too long with lacking payoffs felt like a waste of time. But if you liked it, more power to yah. I’m glad and I respect your opinion.
Yes, 99 is the most consistent in quality and nostalgia mood. Most of the stories feel like edgy episodes of Are You Afraid of The Dark or Tales From The Crypt.
Since V/H/S, and V/H/S 2 had spin-off films based off one of their segments would be interesting if they make a spinoff film involving the immortal Ruth.
@@RANDOMLOOPGENERATOR The first one is a spinoff called Siren which is the succubus from the first film, and Kids vs Aliens is a spinoff of the final segment Alien abduction slumber party in the second film.
Why did you guys skip one of the movies in the VHS series? Wasn't there a VHS 99 movie too? Great reviews though guys. Just subbed this week after y'all's reviews of Grave Encounters... I'm going to check this movie out in a few days, as soon as I watch V/H/S '99 for the first time. Regarding your discussion about camping, while I like going camping when I sleep in an RV or a cabin, actual "roughing it" camping kind of sucks. I once went camping in Yosemite in my 20s with some relatives, and we actually slept in sleeping bags, with just a tarp between us and the ground. I mean, nature is not level like a nice comfy bed is, so I had extreme back pain for like a month, and we only camped there for a week! And, yes, you may encounter raccoons, snakes, possums, mountain lions, and bears when you camp. It can be legit scary!
I enjoyed the first segment (No Wake) the family segment (Ambrosia) and the last one (Dreamkill) the most. I couldn’t understand any of the 2nd segment & there were no subtitles available for me unfortunately. The VR segment was boring til the violence started, and the wraparound was just meh.

I like the small touch of bringing it back up in the next segment with the water gun at the party bit. I was totally hoping for a zombie short tho lol
Like where tf do they go after that?
@@JeanEDeaux They go get it back in blood. That simple. The sequence involving the water gun is related to the first one. 😂

The ending just killed me. I mean, who knew Rory just wanted to be an aerobics instructor? 😂
He just wanted to be Jane Fonda. She put out aerobics tapes in the 80's. Maybe that was her tape. 😮🤣
Horror isn't not good without a strike of comedy it needs it
Yep, he just wanted Gary to lose a few pounds, bless him.
Sorry what?
Dreamkill links into The Black Phone. The cop mentions Gwen, he's the brother of the mother who killed herself after having the dream thing.
So the black phone also takes place in V/H/S
That lake story was my FAVORITE! The whole thing and how it came back around at the end 🙌🏼
& the one with the cops & murder was mind blowing 🤯
