  • Gaps are hard to maintain closed after orthodontic treatment because there is usually a tooth size discrepancy between the upper and lower jaw and/or jaw tooth discrepancy (too much space in jaws for the size of teeth).
Retainers are needed for life to maintain space closure. Sometimes enlarging teeth via veneers, bonding, or crowns will be needed for stable results.

Hi Dr. Bailey! Nice that you are back with your very helpful videos. My treatment with invisalign is nearly over and the result is close to perfect. During that period I loved to see your proposals. Which retainer do you prefer for your patients? Best wishes from Germany, Franz

Hi Franz, most of my patients get the clear retainers (we use the Invisalign brand call Vivera) because it helps to hold the teeth better and protects your teeth from grinding at night. This video may be helpful for you: ua-cam.com/video/YeBP6J682_o/v-deo.html
      Congratulations on finishing up soon!

Please may I ask you a question? I have just watched your video about the down side of 'jiggling'. I always wear my invisalign for a minimum of 22 hours a day, however, this regularly includes 6 removals of the trays within those two hours. Is that ok - or is is it in fact more beneficial to take the trays out fewer times a day, but keep them out for longer periods of time? Invisalign in the BEST thing that I have spent money on, I see it as such an investment in to my future (I'm late 40s!) - I just want to make sure I get the best results within my estimated 14 month treatment. Thank you for your time. x

Hi I’m the same almost late 40s just started Invisalign today. I’ve struggled to get it out once and I’m planning to just stick to 2-3 meals per day so I take them out three times max. Otherwise it would be 4 ish

Thank you for the useful videos! I have a question I'm hoping you can help me with. I've been wearing my final tray for a month and will get scanned for my retainers soon. I went on a trip for a few days and irresponsibly didn't wear my trays for 48 hours. After that 48 hours, I noticed that my face looked like "me" again (pre-invisalign me)... all through my invisalign treatment my lower jaw has moved forward and become square and my face has gotten so long and I hate it. But now (until I put my trays back in later today and my jaw starts moving back again, ugh), I love my face and can actually see my cheekbones again. I'm so sad that I'm about to go back to my long, square-jawed, no cheekbones face, and even worse that my retainers that I'm about to get scanned for next week will force me to keep that awful shape. Do you have any advice for how I can talk to my dentist about getting my old face back/keeping the way my jaw looks after not wearing my trays for a few days? Could I get scanned for retainers after not wearing my trays for a few days so I can capture this "good" face/jaw shape with my retainers? THANK YOU!

Hmm, that’s an interesting observation. Discuss this with your doctor because only they have access to your records. Sometimes people posture their jaw forward with elastic wear, altering their facial profile.

Please help! I’ve had my invisilign for about 21 weeks and now it’s getting loose on the bottom piece. The left side is fine but the right side is loose when I put the whole thing in. The front teeth are fine and my very back moles is fine but everything in between is very loose. It’s not even on my teeth, it’s like it’s sitting on top, like it’s not even attached. How do I fix this problem? Please help!

That doesn’t sound right. Contact your dental provider to get it evaluated.

Actually I’m kind of curious how retainers can keep my bite in the correct position since I have rubber bands for my bite currently. When I’m done with Invisalign and move on to retainers, wouldn’t my jaw be misaligned again without the force of the rubber band? Especially worrisome for me since I sleep on my side which pushes my jaw in one direction :(

Elastics move teeth but not the jaws. This video may help: ua-cam.com/video/HrspOOtKyec/v-deo.html

Hi dr ..Now I can bite on one side. I wore orthodontics a year ago and noticed that the last tooth on the semen side applies to the last tooth only, and there is a void where the other teeth are high and caused me pain in these teeth, so the orthodontist cooled the inner edges of the teeth and became biting on one side only, which is the left And the right is no, and now I'm nervous, I hope for help
