Hi, I actually manufacture steel door parts, mass producing them, I've noticed now I have competitors who just copied me, most likely getting it made in China. My answer to that was, I'm going to figure out how to go from a machine made mass produced part to a hand made forged part instead, we're even starting to do our own traditional black smith finish.
It was quite the learning curve because I knew nothing about blacksmithing, I started watching this channel, learned so much ..... thanks for sharing !!!! We literally just launched our new hand made hardware line, started from 0, with no experience at all, slowly we are building a new business, which is very exciting !
The thing that fascinates me, blacksmithing has been around for thousands of years, it almost died out, but has surged back. As a business man, if you can produce a well made hand crafted product, people love that, each product is unique, I'm here to say if you are going to have a business, you need to be different, if you don't, you have a good product easily copied, sooner or latter, someone will have it made in China, you won't be able to compete anymore.
The interesting part is folks our hardware is going on very high end new modern style architecture, the architects are really liking what we are doing .... so blacksmithing is very relevant in the modern world.
I 100% learned my skills watching gentleman like Mr. Black Bear, hopefully I will get an opportunity to pay it forward as well. I also discovered small steel hardware pieces are perfect for an online shipping business, also a perfect home business ...... blacksmithing is awesome!
My daughter lives 400 miles away and asked for hooks to hang 32 ball type caps.
I made her sets of six total about 36 so she has a few extra.,
Yes I tried to copy some of your hooks perhaps she will see some on your videos some day.
Thanks you for teaching Sir
I really appreciate that you turn off the forge when you start your demonstrations! Plus wearing the mic makes it so easy to hear what you are saying plus the very close camera shots. Excellent!
Glad you enjoy it!
This video is such an awesome video for new people to blacksmithing.
Thank you so much.
These are inexpensive small projects that are very usefully. But great Introductory projects.
im going back through your library, some of your video's are absolute legendary. I have gotten so much inspiration from your work. thanks so very much.
I really like when you do content that I can practice in my basic forge at home. I have a scrap piece of angle iron that might make 3 or 4 hooks similar to these so I might try it next week! Please don't ever come to the end of the hook of the week series, I would be heartbroken if it ever stopped! For me it teaches me a lot more than content by youtubers who are experienced blade or swordsmiths as it shows techniques that I can understand and attempt to recreate at home. That's not to say that I don't follow creators who make that kind of content, I do, and enjoy it but what you show me is more relevant to me because someday I might be able to do the things you do if I practice enough.
Good content ideas for practising techniques with these hooks of the week. Basic skills class for sure, with a little bit of some slightly more advanced practicum. A great learning channel for sure.
Agree totally with the above. So many different techniques to run out and have a go at. Love it!
It's good to see that I'm not the only blacksmith that drops my projects constantly. LOL 😂
Some of the forging looks like a stop motion video. So freakin cool
Another great week for hook of the week...
Love your hook of the week segments!
Thanks
Whaaaat?? I will never think of angle iron the same way any more! What an incredible material!! I am so thankful of you for sharing your ideas!!
I am glad you were inspired
same love this kind of thinking
trash to treasure
Love the t shirt and the safety message...I do wear protective eyes gear., and if I forget...I remind myself your satey message after each of your videos. Thanks.
my favorit hook of the week episode it is the most fun and creativ one for me
I can't believe you've gone and made eight bloody hooks for a single HoTW! You absolute madman, John
Hook of the week, PLUS...
8 HOOKS FROM a single piece of scrap angle iron, nicely done. That one split-top hook is definitely a place to hang a fire poker. Beautiful curves in that one for sure.
Thanks
This is the most excited about making hooks I have been in a while. I have made hundreds, but never from angle iron. I am really looking forward to forging these ...
Very nice as always.. Thanks John! I love Sunday videos☺👍🔨☕
Thanks for the video! I really like watching them
We have those kind of days buddy, don't weaken you can do it ! That's what I tell myself to keep going
Sometimes the results are worth sticking out the rough spots. Of course sometimes a day off to take a break is also worth it 😉
Love the way you work to inspire people. You are a great teacher John.
The wooden flag was extremely good, but I'm in awe of the safety glasses T! Well done to both of them for sending you really nice gifts. I know I would be delighted if someone I knew sent me something similar! (Not trying to cadge gifts from my friends here BTW, I just thought it was a really nice touch and thought it worth a comment)
A vitual jackpot of hooks of the week! What an interesting use of material. Excellent!
Glad you enjoyed it
..Thank You Sir for taking the time to get our minds buzzing with ideas...!!
Watching this video makes you think, maybe scratch your head and think your crazy but these are great hooks.
We all have those kind of days so I, for one, really appreciate that you still produced another, great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Yup, 8 hooks done, time for a hike.
Hi John, long time subscriber here. Really enjoy your hook of the week series. A few suggestions you may or may not have heard. If you have tool steel in those buckets, some hooks to get work done. Like drag hooks. The kind you pound into a tree you cut down, hook a chain up and pull it out with your tractor or truck. Also hooks for things like wenches, block & tackle, with pin and with swivel, for lifting or pulling heavy loads. After all most of us Smith's have allot of hard work to do and we can make at of our own tools and hardware.
Hope you like the suggestion.
Some good ideas, thanks
I'm really loving the little intros in front of each of the videos now, complete with music, really works and is just visually pleasing. Overall, seeing production quality increase a bit with each video is fascinating as well, and it appears you are enjoying what you're doing, so keep it up!
Thanks, they are fun to do and hopefully they let people know whats coming
The close up camera really helps to show the movement of the metal as you hit it..
Very thankful for that view...
Really mind opening how you made all the differant shapes😇😇
Good Morning , John
This was the most Unique
Hook (HOOKS) of the Week !
I really liked the way your Mind
Works , on the Run , while forging ! Great Video , to say the least ! Take Care and Be Safe ! KEEP HAMMERING !
I am glad you enjoyed it
I haven't been here in a while, but your videos have come a long way since you started here. I've always loved your videos, but there is a new tempo and pace. And a new spring in your step since i last checked in. Fantastic job brother and please keep it up!👍
Thanks, welcome back
Excellent idea John. You know what they say about knowledge vs experience, you don’t learn this kind of tip/trick from a book. Thank you for being so generous with your experience.
For your hook (with difficult access for tightening a screw) i would suggest that one use the equivalent of a small lag screw(s) so one can tighten it into place with a small wrench (from the side).
Great video. 8 hooks in one. Super bonanza 👍👍😉😉😉
I love this project!
I really like the asymmetrical one. Very Nightmare Before Christmas. Nice work, John.
Great job John. Hooks from angle iron! Love the outtakes too. Keep up the good work!
Thanks
Thanks for sharing with us.
#6 would make a great handle for a shop cabinet, or a shed door.
Good observation, I hadn't seen it that way
I concur, that would make a nice cabinet handle.
That was a great hook of the week! Something i would have never thought of, thanks john
Wow. 8 Hooks of the week all in One video. Your so gifted John, and I love how you make it up as you go along. Your expertise and Ingenuity is an inspiration to all of us out here... I will try to do all the hooks you made in the Whole Hook of The Week series. Thanks for sharing your skills and imagination with us.
Great hooks John, another thought for the pig tail hook could be to make it spiral out to one side a little bit to give screw driver access. Well done again :-)
Good idea
Hook #2 (in the order you made them), if sized correctly, would be terrific for hanging an antique sword or musket. (You'd need 2 of them though) I love making random projects. It's fun and relaxing to make whimsical and random stuff just because....
#2 would make a good hook for a Day Pack or Mrs. Switzer's purse.
The last one, 26:26, installed hook down (the way it is in the vise) might make a neat set of drawer pulls.
Fiddling along seems to be true for every craft.
What a cool, creative concept! I know what I'm doing when I get back to my shop later!
I really appreciate how your mind looks at the things you make.
That last one makes me think of a bench mount bottle opener.
Made me think of an old medieval torch mounts
That was a fun one 👍👍👍
Something I hadn't thought much about, handy hooks for the workshop, or mount a selection on a board for a coat rack. Thanks John.
I liked this one John. The square corners add a little class and refinement in my opinion. I mean who would take the time to do an upset corner for a hook?👍. It’s also has me thinking about other structural shapes as starting stock. PS, finishing up a couple more dies for myself and then should be ready for heat treatment. Talk soon
Sounds good, no hurry on my part
Awesome Hooks John only limited by your imagination....thank you
Using angle iron for the square corner, especially for that drive hook, is brilliant. Thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it
Nice batch of creative hooks from what would be considered"scrap" ( no such thing in our world).
Well done Sir!
enjoy your creativity
Great one mate. That's a top way to steer experimentation.
Thanks
Great hooks, John! I especially like the 4th one. Personally have only forged angle stock twice. Once twisted a piece of heavy 3/8×1 1/2 ×1 1/2 for a lamp post and the other time flattened and tapered one end and made a scroll for a hanging basket. 🐾🔥⚒
I like a little pickin with my hooks. Good Job!
good idea with the angle iron
Great video John, i wouldn't have thought of using angle iron, but now I can see the benefit of it! You could definitely get alot of hooks from a length of angle iron.
Nice one John! I look forward to this series every week
So that big stock became 10 little hooks, Many little projects.
Thanks you Sir
8 hooks
I see you've managed to learn the ThisOldTony method of metal cutting.
I love the hook that you used the vice as your bending jig. There are so many ideas in this video, I think I need to play with some angle iron and I've got some small offcuts from some huge sections of angle iron that could make some interesting 🤔
At the begging or the video I noticed that you've been learning how to cut steel the way This Old Tony does it. Very nicely done, you're getting really good at the editing 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very cool John! For the one with the difficult screw hole, I would tack weld the bottom screw in and do like you said and spin the hook in and secure it with the top screw.
That would be a good approach to the problem.
Another superb video! Would really like to see an “auger” . Thanks for the content 👍🏼👍🏼
I will do some simple augers at some point
@@BlackBearForge yeah, some auger bit for a brace would be super informative and useful. It is dang hard to fond a full set around where I live. Always singles or rusted beyond repair to have the size wanted.
Would you make the whole thing out of tool steel? Or would you forge weld a good cutting edge steel to the end and sharpen it up real nice?
Also, how to make the lead-screw for it?
Could be an awesome set of bits from 1/16 to 1 inch by 16ths. Would love to see how to twist the flat shank evenly for the corkscrew effect wood augers bits have.
Awesome work.
I love the creativity, elegance (yes, I know the word doesn't usually go with black smiths) and work flow.
Thanks for sharing. : )
Great episode!! Man that last hook , in a variety of sizes, would make awesome tool holders!! Thanks for the lesson John 👍
yay it looks like your hand got better!
Its been better for more than a year
@@BlackBearForge I guess i missed a few episodes. Good to see.
Realy nice video and realy nice hooks.
🤘😃🤘
Thanks
Great idea for a hook video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
This is great! I knew I was saving all those little angle iron cut offs for something. Thanks for sharing.
I t was fun trying to come up with 8 different hooks.
Amazing ideas. Thank You
John, Very creative. I think Facebook page will be busy.
I hope so, I like to see where some of these ideas go with someone else's thoughts
Love blacksmithing
With the round end hook you could upset where it hangs on the wall and put the screws next to each other, that way the hook wouldn't be in the way
That would be a good approach
That's a great collection of hooks. And having that nice square corner looks very useful. Thanks for sharing.
Most of them turned out pretty good!!👍
You are very good taecher! gracias!!!
Another wonderful hotw
Great group of hooks, John! Made for a good video!
Thanks
I well be keeping all my angle line of cuts from now on. I liked all your hooks john , just hope I can match them.
It was a fun little challenge
These are really interesring ideas.
Fun stuff John
Great series of hooks for the hook of the week, and some Wonderful inspiration
Thanks
Real nice job , sometimes not using any plan and just going with it sure has some nice results, sure like the hooks totally unique won't find the same hook anywhere else , nice
Isn't technology wonderful!
Any word on the ribbon burner? Looking forward to seeing it run.
The way my schedule looks it may not be until mid November. Of course by then I will be trying to keep the shelves stocked for holiday order
This was awesome to watch. Really reminded me of the 366 hook project that Matt Jenkins did. Got a few cool ideas for myself too!
This is very much inspired by Matt
The last one looks like a old school pop opener.
This was a bonus
I don't watch every video when they're come out but this is why I keep coming back. I've got several pieces of large angle iron that aren't big enough for much of anything. Now I know what to do!. Btw John ain't fussing but I've been a patron for a while now and I haven't gotten my bottle opener yet. Are you still doing that?
I am way behind, but I still plan to get everything out
@@BlackBearForge thanks John I know you are busy just wondering. Keep up the good work! I learn something new from every video.
That still pic of hooks actually spells out 'Happy Halloween" in proto-hebraic scripts....like wow!
I will have to take your word for that
@@BlackBearForge Don't... but they did look like Hebrew to this baptist eye at first glance! ☺
good one
Rarely do you get what you envisioned.
Most of the time,
You just keep going until you get tired or you're impressed.
🤔 😆
You`re my favourite Hooker. Keep on hookin`.
🤔😀
@@BlackBearForge One has to make a living...right? As long as you always wear some protection!
I like the way you swing your Hammer. Keep em comming! ;-)
@@advocatusdiaboli1588 it's getting a little R-rated in this feed...
Viewer/reader discretion is advised!
Something I’ve never heard a blacksmith say is “ it can’t be done “
Instead of saying you went ahead and split that with the band saw you could have said you had just sharpened your hardie! 😁
Hi John, have you thought of a Bowler Hat or Derby Hat HOOK?
Yes I have. There may be something left in the bucket for that purpose. If not I will look into it when we get into a new bucket.
@@BlackBearForge a cowboy hat hook too.
Anyone of those hooks will support your hat just fine . 😁
