I just got my RFinder M1, thanks to a very good buddy of mine who is quite the innovator. I'm going to update the firmware and start testing it out today. I can't believe how high quality this thing is!!!
with all the technology we have why can't it be dual band UHF and VHF Plus wideband and narrow band plus FM and should also have a Bluetooth speaker mic come with it
Some smartphones *had* FM broadcast reception built in (I still have a DigiLand Android tablet, and Sony mp3 player that does, though the tablet's successor models do not). But users don't seem to care about terrestrial broadcast so much anymore, they're content to stream music. And removing even a little bit extra hardware on a high-volume, low margin consumer device that won't be missed, means a lot of money the manufacturer could be saving in the long run. (Even so, I'd like to see integrated rx-only SDR in smartphones, and let others take care of the apps that use it...though some countries might object to the potential for non-broadcast reception in a technology as widespread as smartphones.)
The other cool thing about this is that it's 100% field programmable. Frequency, talkgroup, color code, CTCSS, DCS etc can all be entered in on the fly.
Impressive! I did not see a directory of talk groups, though. How do you select the talk group you want, and are they compatible with both BM and Moto?
Is producing a dual band or tri-band not doable in this form factor (I'm thinking software could make that rather easy)? if so, that would certainly add value for the price.
Great review of a very interesting device. I am an rfinder subscriber but didn't understand the device all that well. Have there been any functionality updates? Thanks again.
HRC one last question for now. If the app finds a repeater that happens to have a tie in to System Fusion and not DMR can you still bring up the repeater and talk into it to come out into a Fusion room?
HRC to you're knowledge is the RFinder M1 the only one that doubles as a actual DMR radio and a cellphone with the push to talk button, or are there others to choose from that may not be as expensive? I know there are other network radios with PTT buttons and they are cellphones too, but short of going through apps like teamspeak 3 and then onward to places like the IRN where you can do some connecting to RF DMR or System Fusion, regular repeaters ect. It is really only a round about way if you will. I would love to have a real radio side as well, but like many 700-800 price point is just to much at this time.
Okay!!! This video sold me. I'm buying the M1 for sure. I'm already an AT&T customer... LTE bands 2,4,5,17,&20... done!!! In case the Internet goes away (including cell towers) it appears as though I can still use this for DMR as long as I can store a 'codeplug' somewhere in the memory. I have a few questions for Bob and/or HRC: 1. DMR texting to other DMR users on their 'normal' DMR handsets would be spectacular (12-button texting on a DMR handset is horrible!!! Hardly anybody does it because we're spoiled with smartphone keyboards). I would love to send a text to my buddies saying, "meet me on TAC310"... Game-changer. Are there any plans to enable texting on this DMR handset? 2. I saw the BM hotspot, any plans to make it a hotspot for other networks? Should we ask them to help? 3. We have a commercial DMR repeater at work that we use, but our handsets must use DMR's 128AES encryption. Can we just buy all of our employees this M1 handset instead of the DMR handset AND the Samsung Galaxy phone that we issue, and save money (my guys would love this)? 4. Some of the RFinder DMR repeater entries in the DC area (ie: N8RAT and N3QEM) are not accurate. The repeater owners have tried to edit/enter the correct info in RFinder to no avail. Can we edit&save those channels in our M1 radio to correct those entries, including the missing TalkGroups? 5. Can we make the M1 compatible with the DMR 'user.csv' contact list (of MD380tools fame) so that we can use this thing off-line/off-grid and still know who we are talking to? 6. Speaking of off grid, can we store and edit/update a codeplug to be used in the M1 offline? Given the huge size of the MicroSD card can't it be a gazillion channel/zone capacity as well? - I got into ham radio for the emergency preparedness capability. Just recently, most of our DMR repeaters have BroadBand Ham Net (BBHN) IP-backup and are on emergency power. I totally believe with minor tweaking and smart user programming this could still be your primary carry-around phone that has the added benefit of doubling as an off-grid DMR handset that you coincidentally always happen to have on your person!!! I'm a total believer in the M1, how can I help?
Yes, sir. I knew it was analog as well - very impressive. However, analog UHF isn't big around here, but DMR UHF is exploding... exploding (my bros were putting up 2 more repeaters last weekend). So much so, that many of us would like it to be one of the systems of choice for EmComm in our area. It has twice the capacity of analog and unlimited texting. BTW, texting in DMR is not used much in the US due to tiny radio keypads. This could be solved with the RFinder M1. In fact, if I were a regular ham and a few of my buddies got the M1, I would get one just to start using the global texting capability of DMR. Even some of our emergency forms could be sent via brevity code in DMR text. So many possibilities. I'm getting an M1 anyway. You sold me. In fact, if I can get my boss to sign off, I'd like him to get 20 of these to replace our UHF DMR radios at work (and our AT&T Android phone).
I just got a SharkRF that allows me to access D-Star, C4FM and DMR. So with this phone I can access DMR and Repeaters without the SharkRF using the built-in 3G??
This radio RFinder M1 has won me over. I have only one doubt .. is Dual Band or monoband available? Is it possible to have only one dual band radio or do you need to buy two? Many thanks for an answer.
Thank you for your response. Thank you for making a youtube review. Another question: I have an AT&T phone open and using Metro PCS provider, my question is will this work with metro PCS?
I just stumbled across this product, gotta say, it's a long overdue development! I am not a Ham radio guy, so not really sure about this but does the fact that the smartphone is hooked into that long antenna do anything to improve it's range? Thanks!
HRC another question also. I downloaded the RFinder app to my regular cellphone and was looking at everything ... Do you know if the repeaters listed are all coordinated with the repeater council or will it find repeaters that are NOT coordinated as well? Also when you bring up a particular repeater info and the button that says send to radio; does that only work on the type of cellphone/radio you was showing in the video. Did not know if you had a real radio beside the phone if it could transfer that information over to it somehow?
well if there's going to be communications like you and bob have i'm in on the deal hopefully we will be able to get answers to our problems when we have on,
I am very interested in the K-1 as I do use DMR with the Anytone 868 HT, and subscribe now to the RF finder app. However, I notice one of your local repeaters listed for Lake Worth, Fl, which is down by me, being located in Ocean Ridge, FL, just 10 miles south of that location. I do currently have a Samsung, Galaxy Note 8, Android phone at this time using Unlimited Verizon, though their concept of Unlimited as with the other carriers has recently changed in diffferent levels for different monthly payments accordingly.
I just got a Inrico S200 to play around with ZELLO. The first thing that got on my nerves was Android 7. The RFinder has Android 6. Why? A device of this price should have something newer, no? Does it have to do with licensing fees? Thanks.
Hi was just wondering if the stock ptt app has a scan function to scan through the saved channels? Also can the dmr slide of the radio be set up to receive multiple talk groups that are not the TX Talk Group? Also do you know if Verizon will allow this device on there network?
I have to say I'm impressed. I'd like to see how this ends up a couple generations down the line. Now I just have to misplace 750 bucks where my wife can't find it.
I hear it's the best . Last year i wondered if some one or a company played with the idea Of a walkie talkies smart phone. I have been stumbling apon theses more and more I hear this one is amazing. Do want. Thanks for the review.
Can I program frequencies I want to hear including Commercial DMR? Can I use it to reach Talk Groups with the use of repeaters and without the use of hot spots?
working on it...at this rate...fall...but may not have a phone function....wifi only...but RFinder will work untethered once you initialize it on wifi....
Bob Greenberg I'm not an electrical engineer so don't know the ins and outs. as a end user and my thought on this unit is, I don't if scans but bands at the same time. I really want to switch between digital UHF and VHF. for example my area is VHF. but if I go to Macon Augusta Jacksonville there is a lot more UHF. I would love to have phone function but data use like a small tablet phone with hot spot capabilities would be just as awesome as a phone.
My phone is pretty busy right now! It's my main logbook, and looking up calls, reverse beacon network, sota traffic and echo link. Usually more than one thing going on at a time. Actually thought of buying a cheapie android phone to share the 'non-phone' duties. Making a phone do even more is well, kinda like combining a taco bell with kfc restaurant. It's been done but wasn't really a great idea in the end. It is a handsome rig though. To pricey for me. Elecraft took most of my radio money. lol
Im testing out a Runbo M1 DMR/Analoge PTT and POC and am trying to use the radio as its own hotspot in its own right but its not working. Can anyone help. I know that there is a guy called Bob who wrote the software but where that app update is who knows??
Sprint requires certification...they have to approve the IMEI of the devices...we have some prerequisites to certify with both Sprint and Verizon which we are working on...
So close, but what the hell is he doing making a standard VHF or UHF radio circuit and (very nicely) strapping a cellphone to it in a great case?? That should be a wholly SDR solution and operable on a broad range of frequencies, perhaps software limited for ham use or w/e but also obviously limited by the antenna attached. When I see that I'll be first on the buyer's list!
Great video, it would be nice if it was more bands in one unit with it though. Great idea going though. Do you think that they will ever be able to have that? Thanks for sharing, stay safe. 73's
I want to see a good phone with a radio in it. Tired of these crappy phones with a radio. I want to see like flagship quality phone with this feature added.
I had the K1 for 4 days. The phone does not work properly. The phone will ring when it is resting with the screen off, and the screen stays off even while the phone is still ringing. So you wake the screen and don't see the phone. So you tap the phone app and the phone comes to the screen while still ringing. Then you discover that you can't get to the ringing phone no matter how hard you try. Maybe I had a defective phone, so I will give the K1 the benefit of doubt and say that only my K1 did all that. If you did not put it on At&T and use it as your phone, you left out some pretty important information. Why? Because my cell phone is infinitely more important that the radio. Rfinder will show you all the talk groups, and yes you can send it to the radio, but YOU CAN"t send any of the data to a memory channel, so you have to have a GPS lock, or manually enter the GPS location to get Rfinder to work. I have a metal roof, and I had to get outside to get it to work. It's just too bad that it was raining for the whole 4 days.
"fake news!" LOL I love it! Figure that a new Samsung or Fruit Fone will run you that or more withOUT the RF functionality and this doesn't seem out of line. de WØRHP
It is, but in China they use other bands. This phone was primarily designed for European and Chinese markets, which has different band frequencies for 4G.
The price is not insane. If you buy a high end Android phone and a DMR radio, it's going to run you same. Why not have everything in one and the luxury of RFinder controlling everything?
androiddmr.com...you can go there and sign up and we will notify you when we get stock or begin taking preorders...early march we will begin to ship again...
Yea, stay away from ordering from anywhere but androiddmr.com...we will be back in stock shortly on androiddmr.com...we are about to release a major mod to the RF module that is not on the alibaba or amazon models and ours have a custom firmware and RFinder enablement to make it relevant for hams...if you buy it elsewhere you will have to buy the firmware from us which just makes it more expensive.
I had one Runbo X5 in 2012. In a real emergengy sytuation it let me down and it costs nearly a life because of that. A runbo? Never again! NOT as reliable as it looks like. Maybe good for fun, not for serious sytuations were the phone is the only contact with health and fire departments.

Thank you Eric for the info on a great Ham friendly device ... Swiss Army Knife of Ham Radio =) Another great UA-cam ... keep up the great job =)
Obviously the TX is limited to the model that you bought, but was is the RX range? Can you use it as a scanner to listen to VHF/UHF?
Now can you hook your Mobilinkd to it, or does it have APRS capability’s ? thank you Eric like your channel

CAN YOU USE THE WALKIE TALKIE WITHOUT THE SIM CARD
Does the volume knob work ok?
why work with other cell providers. and is the firmware going to be upgraded on the new one.
I have a TracPhone smart-phone through ATT. Will the SIM card for TracPhone wrk?
Will this work with Bluetooth headphones? Also, would there be a way to make the channel knob a volume control for radio?
Does it come with a 6300 mAh battery too or just the 5300 mah
Will this work on TracFone? I would like to play with one but don't want to give up the AT&T iPhone

Can you scan the 16 channels?
I went to their website to inquire about the cost of Rfinder M1 and notice that the Android was 5.1 smartphone, but your youtube specified 6.0.
Maybe a Typo, because i know it is android 6.0...
what about the 4G version?
This one is supposed to do 4g.

That price is insane.... I would love one but I work for a living..... Lower the price by half and then maybe..... Too bad looks great...
I put in 132 hours this last 2 weeks....LOL
HamRadioConcepts yeah I hear you... But it's way out of my price range but man I would love one...... I hope the price drops..... Thanks 73
Hi Bill...its actually the same price as buying a decent Android device outright unlocked...but also has an RF module!
The price is not insane. If you buy a high end Android phone and a DMR radio, it's going to run you same. Why not have everything in one and the luxury of RFinder controlling everything?
ioutdoor T2 IP68 Waterproof 2.4'' 4500mAh UHF Walkie Talkie Bluetooth Dual SIM Card Feature
It a Mac Book Connected,
OK where do I buy one? who sells them give me a phone number
androiddmr.com...you can go there and sign up and we will notify you when we get stock or begin taking preorders...early march we will begin to ship again...
you can buy it at website called Alibaba most of the Runbo's M1's are from China Military Spec...
Yea, stay away from ordering from anywhere but androiddmr.com...we will be back in stock shortly on androiddmr.com...we are about to release a major mod to the RF module that is not on the alibaba or amazon models and ours have a custom firmware and RFinder enablement to make it relevant for hams...if you buy it elsewhere you will have to buy the firmware from us which just makes it more expensive.
sounds awesome updated firmware is always good :)
I am at my desk...+1 631.610.5120 we are taking preorders by appointment....shipping early April...
I had one Runbo X5 in 2012. In a real emergengy sytuation it let me down and it costs nearly a life because of that. A runbo? Never again! NOT as reliable as it looks like. Maybe good for fun, not for serious sytuations were the phone is the only contact with health and fire departments.
shame its not 5 watt and shame the price isnt a lil more affordable!
4 watts vs 5 watts is no difference. 4 watts and very acceptable. a 5 watt version would offer you no improvement.
4 Watts is standard for any UHF HT.
