They're an absolutely incredible breed. Out of the 130 000 Walers that Australia committed to the Great War, only one made it home. Sandy, who belonged to a Major General. In 2012, we only had 700 registered Waler's and part bred Waler's left, so it's lovely to see the breed becoming better known again. A lot of the Austrlian Brumby horses are actually Waler's too!
Love this breed so much & I am honoured to be able to say I’ve had the chance to ride a waler when I was younger he was just backed the day before and his owner and I went out on a ride the day after & she put my on the stallion he was such a Gorgeous stable natured guy , I felt so safe on him he had me in his care the whole time & after I encouraged him to go into and enjoy a lope & Collected canter my friend admitted to me that that was his first canter in saddle with someone in saddle on his back . He definitely didn’t let it be known at the time as he was like a horse that had been ridden for ten or so years , strong soft in the mouth and dependable & safe to ride . I felt so in awe & honoured that I was the one who got to show him gently how fun it was to be ridden at a lope , collected canter & to go as fast as he wanted to go then come back to collected then into a trot then back into a relaxed walk all without any fuss from him what so ever and all with the lightest of hand control that I ever needed on any horse , that was when I fell deeply in love with this breed and that fella she called him Ozzie ;-D she was American from Madison county & came over here to live & to own & breed the Waler breed she had always had Quarter horses before that and I also had quarter horse x breeds myself .
I had never heard of this breed! Clancy is a beautiful horse and such a calm gentleman. You can see how he would be unflappable in almost every situation.
I had not heard of the Waler. Thank you I enjoy your program learning about all the breeds. Your a very lucky lady to get to experience meeting them all.
Clancy is stunning! I didn't know about the Waler. Teresa thank you for inviting Alissa to meet & ride Clancy & teaching us about the history of the Waler. And thank you for sharing your story.
Wow - I didn’t know about the Waler! It’s so exciting to discover the breeds alongside with you! What an honor to ride Clancy as the first person after the long break. I hope he continues to stay well!
Very interesting to learn of the Waler breed and its history. Clancy is such a handsome boy! I love his coloring. Thank you for taking us to Australia!
I have been battling riding anxiety (for no real reason). Your quest rides have inspired me to do my own, and rediscover the love of riding. I challenged myself to 30 rides each with a component out of my comfort zone. So far I’ve done 15, and it is truly thanks to you. Your videos reminded me how enjoyable riding is, they take the focus of of the negative allowing my mind to remember the joy.
Janette, It's an honor to hear that DiscoverTheHorse has inspired you! I love the time that I get to spend with horses and it's my goal to share that joy. Thank you for sharing your 15 successful rides. I am so proud of you, and I look forward to hearing when you reach your goal of 30!
My grandfather rode a waler at the charge of Beersheba by the Australian Light Horse in Palenstine in world war 1. Those soldiers loved their horses but had to leave them behind.
The first time I ever heard of a True Australian Waler was in the Aus. TV Series "McLeod's Daughters"...It saddened me deeply to hear that their breeding was almost extinct. This video was lovely to watch and Clancy was a gorgeous horse. ❤
Walers are a legendary horse here in Australia and other counties wanted them when they went to the front during WW1 as they thought they were the toughest of them all.
I’ve just discovered your channel and I am enjoying meeting all the breeds of horses. I am an Australian and have heard of the Waler breed only because of the movie called War Horse. Thank you for all your wonderful videos.
I read the book but don't remember Walers being mentioned. Joey was from GB. Wales maybe? Must reread it. There's the painting of him either in a church or the town hall maybe, or that's where it WAS. Hoping it's still there after the movie surely skyrocketed interest in him.
I've never heard of the Waler until now. So many interesting and beautiful breeds to learn about. I rode my little QH for 3 hours today, going to soak in the tub now.
I’m so glad you came to Australia and met the lovely Waler … I messaged you a month or so ago and suggested the Waler and the Brumby .. I hope that is your next stop while you’re in Australia … I really love watching you channel.. thank you so much
I think there are 4 distinct categories of Walers: Pony, light officers. light infantry. heavier artillery types. Will you do the Aussie Stock Horse, and the Australian Pony as well as the Brumby whilst in Australia? Some brumbies are basically Waler bred also. I see you had fun with the Aussie Draft!!
Aww! such a pretty horse!! I was not familiar with the Waler until I watched this video! cant wait to see you ride more of our amazing horse breeds we have here in Australia
Apparently it’s called New South Wales because it reminded Captain Cook of the coastline of south Wales bit of trivia I know I just happened to be from North Wales another great footage of a breed of horse I have never heard of before🇬🇧🏴🇺🇸
As a Australian and a waler owner, these horses are unbelievable, there trainable temperament amazing. Size I will have to challenge though my young boy is 18.2 hh at 5. And they come in a very wide range of colours and patterns.
Clancy ist ein ganz tolles Pferd! Ich finde deine Reisen so toll. Man lernt einiges über die Pferde Rassen, die Menschen und die Länder. Love your channel 🐎❤💯.
I have not (heard of the waler) and I'm Australian- This is a huge gap in my education that I'm glad to have filled. I know what my next hyper fixation is... Australian horses is the answer.
So glad you found the video, thanks for watching! The next several episodes will feature horse and pony breeds from Australia, so I'll try to help out with your next hyper fixation. 😁
Their structure varies. I’ve got 6 here of which 4 of the mares are similar in build but yet so different, another mare that’s completely different again, a 21 month old colt that’s different again and my stallion is a finer build.
Yes, I have heard of the Waler before, but not what they looked like. Now I know 😍 I think it's it's interesting to see both the Timor pony and several draft horse breeds in it's origin.
"The Man From Snowy River" was a wonderful movie! I've never heard of the Waler before. Thank you. Now, is there such a breed as the wild "Brombies" of the Grampian Mountains? In the movie, the Calvary Colonel was buying up large lots of "Brombies." ... Australia's history is interesting, both human, and equine.🤗
I love them! I owned one when I was younger and tragically lost him to cancer. I haven't seen them in person since then, but I cannot wait to film them for the project!
I've always wanted a Waler from the moment I read about the Battle of Beersheba (1917). I've recently started playing polo here in Tennessee and wonder what the prospects are of purchasing one from Australia and shipping one here. Anyone in the comments section able to help me out? Thanks in advance!
Are Walers the hardiest horses? I've read that in the 1st world war, a waler horse managed to carry all 5 injured soldiers.. and even better than camels because they could travel continuously in the desert for 36 hours straight with very minimal food and very few water..and carrying the weight of a soldier with very heavy equipments and ammunitions
The horses that served in the middle east campaigns during WW1 (The charge of the light brigade etc)- none of them returned to Australia, they were all shot/put down - something which greatly upset their soldiers/riders.
I don't agree that the breed was nearly extinct, they lived on in all the stock horse herds with long ancestry blood lines throughout Australia. Many direct decendent's and close relatives of horses that went to the Desert campaign in WW1 can still be found in the breeding programs of stock horse breeders and their registry. The belief that the only true Walers exist in wild horse herds running in outback stations is also not true, these wild horse herds originate from same original stock horse herds currently being bred on the large holdings of many hundreds of thousands to millions of acres. the real difference being the wild herds are badly inbred while the managed herds of stock horses have been bred using the introduction of outsourced stallions to prevent inbreeding and to constantly improve the bloodlines.
It would have been nice to see him ridden in a traditional Australian stock saddle and a Barcoo bridle. Clancy is a beautiful horse but he would not have been chosen to go to war because of his white markings. He would be seen in the dark. The less white they had the better.
I had a little waler...he was such a lovely horse. I miss him after twenty years
I'm from New South Wale and the Waler are a legend , hard working , very hard working , friendly , intelligent , fast ...!!!
I was wondering if the Brumby was the same as the Waler - I had heard that Brumbies were used in the wars as well… I am sad for their plight now
Why was it that only 1 made it home? Were the survivors sold to other countries?
Love this breed so much & I am honoured to be able to say I’ve had the chance to ride a waler when I was younger he was just backed the day before and his owner and I went out on a ride the day after & she put my on the stallion he was such a Gorgeous stable natured guy , I felt so safe on him he had me in his care the whole time & after I encouraged him to go into and enjoy a lope & Collected canter my friend admitted to me that that was his first canter in saddle with someone in saddle on his back . I love how Clancy is agreeing with all that his owner is saying as she speaks
Beautiful baby! Yes, I had heard of the Waler Horse. But I just knew they were from Australia, I knew no more detail. Thank you for filling in more!
I had never heard of this breed! Clancy is a beautiful horse and such a calm gentleman. You can see how he would be unflappable in almost every situation.

Clancy 💞💞💞 thanks for this introduction to a GORGEOUS breed Alyssa. He's a credit to his human - he's magnificent 🙂🙌🏻💖
I have never heard of them until now! Love these gentle giants!
Very interesting to learn of the Waler breed and its history. Clancy is such a handsome boy! I love his coloring. Thank you for taking us to Australia!

Amazing history, thank you to your grandfather and his waler ❤
Oh that had to be crushing on top of everything else they dealt with.
Alyssa, Australia loves you. we have lots of empty land for you to roam. God bless you.
Ohhhh Clancy, his horse was my favorite besides Denny of course. ❤
The first time I ever heard of a True Australian Waler was in the Aus. TV Series "McLeod's Daughters"...It saddened me deeply to hear that their breeding was almost extinct. This video was lovely to watch and Clancy was a gorgeous horse. ❤
Love this series 😍 thank you so much
So glad to hear! Thanks for joining me on the adventure!
What a beautiful horse - Save the Waler!
What a wonderful horse and a wonderful story. I had never heard of the breed and am truly impressed! Thanks for introducing Clancy to us! ❤
Yes, I had heard of The Waler, but did not know its origins, or characteristics. Very informative video, thank you.
Walers are a legendary horse here in Australia and other counties wanted them when they went to the front during WW1 as they thought they were the toughest of them all.
Lovely to see an Australian horse in your review, he looks like such a gentle soul
So cute, I've never heard of these noble sweeties before ❤

Love walers. My friend has a blue roan. Gorgeous horses.
How amazing to come across a breed that is basically unheard of this side of the world. Very interesting and educational. Thanks Alyssa
He looks like a clydales cross thoroughbred , l have a horse that looks like a twin , same bone , colour , 17 hh .. great nature
I've never heard of the Waler until now. So many interesting and beautiful breeds to learn about. I rode my little QH for 3 hours today, going to soak in the tub now.
Incredible history of this breed!
I had never heard of the Walker before your UA-cam video. They're beautiful! Of course they are! They're horses😉😄 Thank you so much for your videos!❤

Fantastic true story from WW1 about the Waler called Bill the Bastard by Roland Perry, absolutely captivating story.

Just discovered your channel and I love watching your videos! Beautiful horse. ❤️
I love THIS BREED!!! Omg! Can they live in any place? Or just Australia? They are so so beautiful and amazing!
I have a Waler cross American Curly. She's a beautiful girl!
Awesome saddle
I've never heard of the Waler, thank you for sharing !!!!
I didn't know they could be so big. Also thought they were finer boned. Clancy looks a good sturdy fella.
Their structure varies. I’ve got 6 here of which 4 of the mares are similar in build but yet so different, another mare that’s completely different again, a 21 month old colt that’s different again and my stallion is a finer build.

Thank you!
He is a really beautiful horse 🐴🐎🦄
I will tell to a friend in LA about this video, because she is from australia, an aussie😘
I have never heard of the Waler before? that was really good. Will be visting the Brumby horses soon? xx

Yes we have wild horses known as brumbies
Superb
No I've never heard of the Waler horse. I think they are beautiful well balanced, steadfast horses 🐎
I had never heard of a Waler.
He certainly was calm. Good horse for a novice rider.
Welcome to Australia. It’s a harsh land for horses-
nice
Will you ride the (wild) Brumby horses? I heard they were like Mustangs in the US, but in Australia. :)
Have you ever ridden a Le Cheval Canadien before? Would love to see you riding one
I love them! I owned one when I was younger and tragically lost him to cancer. I haven't seen them in person since then, but I cannot wait to film them for the project!
interesting hooves -- they look so "short". great horse. i love the height differential within the breed🤣
Hi from northern Australia so exciting you are here! Are you planning on riding the Australian Stockhorse while you are here?
Yes! Their episode will be coming out very soon! :)
@@DiscoverTheHorse Awesome can’t wait! Slightly biased to the stock horse as my horse is one 🥰
Amazing! You should explore the Percheron next!👀😊 They’re my favourite breed (even though it’s impossible to pick🥲)
Thanks! I can't wait to film the Percheron, they are such a fun breed!
Hope you read a new comment that i made on your video about the friesians. 😘
Do you know what brand of saddle that was? It looked really nice
It is from DP Saddlery LP.
Have you ridden the Kaimanawa horse of New Zealand yet?
Yes! I filmed them on this last trip, so they will be one of the upcoming episodes! :)
@@DiscoverTheHorse ooh can't wait!

There's relaxed, and then there's Clancy.
Hahaha, exactly!
I understood that greys or any mount with a grey colouring was not accepted by the army.
Do you ever ride American or Canadian breeds?
I thought u were going to ride a brumby
Are Walers the hardiest horses?

No, I had never heard of this breed but sure is tall.
They range from 13hh to 17hh. Average height is 14.2 to 15.2hh, they don’t stop growing until well into their teens.
The horses that served in the middle east campaigns during WW1 (The charge of the light brigade etc)- none of them returned to Australia, they were all shot/put down - something which greatly upset their soldiers/riders.
