Freakin' Hilarious!!! except the 21 + thousand dollars tuition one, that's not funny, that's just sad.... a real problem with the system.
That's what happens when EVERYONE should be going to college, not just those who have the attitude and drive to succeed through it all.
By "attitude and drive to suceed" you mean everyone who was lucky enough on the lottery of birth to happen to be born to elite parents, as opposed to the lousy plebs.
Most civilized countries understand the basic fact that an educated population is an investment that benefits the entire nation as a whole.
No, those would actually work hard to get through their programs. There's people who are from privileged upbringings and join some frat and basically waste their time there. There's others who aren't from that life style, but work their butts off for the high grades and scholarships.
College/university is not a good idea for anyone who couldn't maintain an A average through high school for the most part, no matter their financial situation in life. And those who's parents can't afford to pay for most or all of that education, they are saddled with tens of thousands of dollars of debt that will more often than not, cripple them financially for the rest of their lives. You cannot declare bankruptcy for student loans, at least in the USA. Not sure about the rest of the world.
Also with the mass influx of students into University, a bachelors degree is not worth the paper it's printed on, where a good # of them can't even get a job in the field of their studies. So it's either going on to further education for them towards a master's or PhD, which is even more debt, or getting some job (if they're lucky) and slaving away at something to hopefully pay off the loans and maybe save up for retirement since the likelihood of owning their own home is little to none.
My mother was an immigrant who came with her parents and siblings to have a better life. I know my grandfather worked really hard to succeed, they were not rich. But all my aunts and uncles from my mother's side learned the value of hard work and worked at schooling for the most part. I know not all of them went to university afterwards, but that was up to them. That and they could work a full time job during the summer along with some help from my grandfather to pay for it unlike now.
Mostly however, the newer generations need to learn about finances while still in school, so they can really understand what the cost of going higher education might be. Learning the cost and possible rewards along with the possibility of failure and that debt hanging over your shoulders then making a decision if it is a risk they are willing to take is wiser than blinding following the idea pushed by society upon them. There's other ways to further your education that does not cost nearly so much and may open other doors not thought possible.
callak _ That's my point, you shouldn't HAVE to go into crippling debt to get an education. Like I said, most civilized nations understand that investing in educating its youth brings long-term benefits to the nation's economy as a whole, and so have college degrees that are either free or only a symbolic amount is paid.
It's only the US (and the UK is going that way now) that has these ridiculously high fees that only the elites can afford, or that put people in crippling debt for the rest of their lives, slaving away in order to pay it off.
oneeyednarn when I went to college, my family was on food stamps. My tuition was 100% paid for by a state scholarship, and the Pell grant paid 75% of the rest of the costs. A couple of additional scholarships, a small college fund, money earned by interning in my field (aerospace engineering), and a profitable hobby paid for the rest as well as a tour of Europe. Out of pocket, my family contributed maybe $4000 over the 4.5 years. I graduated with practically no student debt and a high 5-figure job offer in hand.
College can be very affordable if you do it right. However, many students don’t, and many should not even be going to college in the first place. It is the fault of high schools and our society that make these students that choosing to not go to college sets them up for failure. This stimulated demand is what is causing tuitions to rise. The loan system is stupid for how easy it is for KIDS to get into 6-figure debt. This easy money is the other reason why college has gotten extortionately expensive. The system is broken, but too many people in power are incentivized not to fix it. Greed is the center of it all. And the “need” to pay for college sports, which contribute absolutely nothing to education.
Want a useful degree at a prestigious university? Start at a community college or in-state university and transfer in later; it will be much cheaper. Apply to as many scholarships as possible. Have no idea what you want to major in? Don’t go to college until you have a firm vision and plan for your life. Want to be skilled in something? Go to a trade school, and you will graduate with little/no debt and have a very valuable ($$$$$) skill. Didn’t do well in high school? Don’t go to college. Your time and money will be wasted. Have no interest in specializing in anything? Then try your best in a low-skill position at low pay and don’t complain that the world is oppressing you.
There are lots of ways to be successful. It’s just inconvenient for universities’ bottom lines for them to be promoted.

Is just another huge business leaving kids with a huge debt. We are in the wonderful process of helping ours get out of that debt. Is insane and disgusting really. The system should make it easier for more bright youth to be able to afford university. Just a huge, huge business for the wealthy only those have a good sleep. Sad.
Dean Desmond colleges are cheaper in Europe and Canada because you guys already paid for the cost by paing higher taxes. Most colleges in America are owed by private businesses so they are nothing more than a money making tool. Those that are owed by the government are much cheaper but students still have to pay tuition. Nothing in America is free. We pay through the nose for everything!

We pay for the strongest military in the world and pay for 90% of NATO which costs as much as our military....so we fund 2 militaries so the rest of the world can fund their education with their defense budgets. So go to Spain and learn for cheaper, USA tax payers are paying your protection fee over there =)
