12 Hour Day in Our Workshop! | Machining, Welding & Line boring

- Experience what a typical 12 hour day in our machining workshop at Cutting Edge Engineering is like! It’s Monday which is one of our busiest days of our week. We’ve got two Caterpillar 777 dump truck suspension strut caps to repair and a front end off a Caterpillar 16H Motor Grader for line boring. For the strut caps we need to do machining & welding to reclaim the bearing surface. For the 16H Front End we have one bushing position that we need to bore out, weld up and bore to spec using our new Sir Meccanica WS1 Plus portable line boring machine. We’ll show you exactly what a day in our workshop from 6am to 6pm is like as we get these jobs completed. See all the interruptions, deliveries, trip to the tool shop and everything in between!

One of the things I most admire about you Kurtis, is you just get stuff done. You're one of the hardest workers I've seen. That kind of work ethic is all too rare in any times.
Also, Kurtis and Karen are running a business. That means that what he and Karen do is what keeps bills paid, what keeps customers happy, along with building and keeping a happy customer base with repeat business! Business owners are a different breed from everyday working folks. They know what it takes to build a successful business, AND keep it successful...VERY HARD WORK AND DEDICATION! I see that in every video from CEE Australia!

I subscribed for three reasons....1. Homey, 2. You remind me of my hard working children who also have a bully breed shop dog, and 3. You're Aussies. I know you get exasperated with us yanks, but you're the closest thing to a twin as we can get. We love you guys...and your dadgum dog, too!

Usually when I'm watching you guys I'm sitting down with my dinner, and I find your "no nonsense get the job done without all the drama" so relaxing and interesting. And never ever let anyone persuade you that the out takes are not required, they make you all the more normal and its really refreshing on this medium. Great work you guys.

I am exhausted just watching this. It looks like you have reached the point where a helper will be worth it. If nothing else, it will free you up from setup, cleanup, part prep, and lesser skilled roles. You would do the skilled work and finishing. You have so many machines now that extra staff will help you put more work through and yield more from what you have.
You do the work of at least 5 typical highly skilled professionals...unbelievable amount of work you get accomplished...experience that came from excellence from the very get go ... I could watch you accomplish all day long...amazing, there might still be hope for humanity...cheers

Karen, thank you for all the time you spend editing out all of Kurtis' mistakes (haha) and to both of you for including them at the end. You are real people. Also, Homey is quite the beast, Love him. What is the average life span of one of the grunter pigs? 5 minutes?

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Also - don't worry about 'only doing 1 video a week' - it is literally part of my Friday Ritual - I come home from the Gym, I've got my Friday Night Takeaways - and I get 30 mins to an hour of Zen Machining and master craftsmanship.
The quality of the videos that you put out, more than makes up for the fact that we get one a week - so don't stress, I wouldn't change it.

There is simply no better channel on UA-cam than this one for learning how large machinery parts can be repaired PROPERLY. It's ultra educational.
The intro with the coffee machines and two mugs, brings back nice memories for me.
I have a shop here in Ontario Canada, my wife and I ran for almost over 25 years. We started at 9:00 AM however, (not 6:00 lol)
We fixed locks and cut keys (technically
still machining :) ) .. we'd make coffee and toast and sit on the front porch 9:00 am waiting for customers :)
She passed away a few years ago (only 40 years old) and now I am in the process of selling the shop and our shop and home (all one building) ..
So Much JUNK collected here after all these decades!! Literally sent one point two, Metric Tonnes to the dump last week) ... :( I still have two (out of 5) kids at home .. we will move to an apartment, and I'll be semi retired, just doing some gravy jobs, for cash a few calls a week :)
But I do so miss, the early morning coffee on the porch with my wife :) ... thank you everyone who read this far ... it's more for me to get feeling out, than inform you all! :)

I like both formats. One is project based, one is machinist based. I’ve always wondered how you were able to get so much done!
This is really some of the best edited content I've seen on youtube. The camera work and production quality are exemplary. I will never need any of these skills but I have somehow picked up enough to talk intelligently with a machinist. What a time to be alive.
Just a joy to watch a tradesman doing his work so effortlessly. The knowledge of the machinery and properties of steel and welding are admirable.
I can only speak for myself but most people watching your videos probably don't care if you repeat things. Instead I think people are fascinated by your technique and the heaviness of the type of equipment you use and repair which is very unusual for most people.
I couldn't care less about welding, I don't care about learning how to weld but I am a little fascinated on how you do the repairs and the heavy equipment.
Keep up the "spirit" of your videos and IMO don't worry about repeating. Nothing is absolutely the exact same. Have a great day! 👍😎 - Florida USA.

Your workshop is amazing,ive worked at many welding and fabrication factories over my 35 years in the steel industry and i have to say curtis you are the most talented multi skilled fabricator ive ever seen. It seems the common theme of these videos is that someone tried to cheap out a repair, botched it up, and later had to finally seek the help of someone who actually knew what they were doing. Great work as usual, always awesome to see another fabricator that takes pride and care in their work.

Agreed, I owned and ran a small engine repair shop for years, it never stopped amazing me how many people royally screwed things up rather then having a pro fix it.. They used to call me magic mechanic. Over the decades I only had a few I could not fix or rebuild without just replacing the engine..
Kurtis, I'm a retired electrical engineer and I have to say how impressed I am with your engineering skill-sets. Your discipline is rigorous. Your problem solving is ace. Your humor is the icing on the cake. All this in a one man show - amazing. Here's hoping you get to do what you want to do for as long as you want to do it. You and yours deserve it. Oh yeah, and you get to live in one of the nicest locations on this great earth. I retired to the Rocky Mountains. ;-)

Yes, the Rockies are great. 1860M elevation means no flooding, cool nights in the summer (it was down to 2C this morning), icy cold mountain spring water all year. By the way, I traveled through the Gold Coast about 30 years ago when I did a coast to coast trip down under. Guess you were just a smart kid then. 😉

I’m sure you can find top notch machinists to do the prep work of many of your jobs or jobs just in general, streamlining the pile up of jobs you have and jobs coming in, while leaving you to do more videos which I’m sure make you as much money as your business, but the more videos we ask for and the quicker they are put out means even more money on top of that… it’s win win win

Hi Kurtis and family. Greetings from Spain. I'm so happy to watch your videos. I was a technic precisión mechanic working in an aeronáutical company. Even worked with technical mechanics of RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) in MRTT proyect, just in A330 tankers, here in Madrid. I Will watch all your videos. Must of the works you do, I have done several times. It's a hard work,but very satisfactory. Have a nice time.

I only met one guy the same as Kurtis in terms of dedication/mindset - I don’t think he liked sleeping or eating much- only happy when working!
I always wanted to know what a day in the life of Cutting Edge Engineering was like, and I got my wish! Isn't it great that you are one of a very few in a niche job field? I agree with you about being the only employee. The stress of training someone plus the worry about his repair quality makes it not worth it.

i shold gladley see more of thes type of videos. This one were realy entertaining.
There might be another slant to this. Right now Kurtis is in his prime. He and Karen have taken on a lot of capital equipment and facility. If something were to happen to Kurtis's physical ability.... well all production comes to a stop. With employees, there is the possibility that things can continue and Kurtis could take it a bit easier, but still ensure quality. Might be another way to look at the future... moving heavy loads, and all the welding positions do take a toll on the body with time.
Reading through these comments and not one negative comment found. Says it all really. Hard working, first class quality, perfect temperament, the right attitude, the list goes on. I wish you both nothing but success in the future.

I really like this format of video. Sometimes the repetition of doing the same operation for 8 parts in a row can get dull, but you are doing several things in one video. I like the variety.

Im totally impressed, your knowledge must be a huge asset to the mining and earthmoving community . Having owned and operated heavy equipment most of my life and at times having engineers that don’t understand the stresses and forces involved on many components and not doing repairs properly can cost a fortune in down time .

I’m a science teacher in the USA, I’ve never been a machinist, engineer, welder, or anything like what you guys do….but prior to becoming a teacher, I worked many jobs such as truck driver and commercial fishing boat captain, to name a few- so I appreciate what you do and how it contributes to keeping the world working…As such, I show your videos to my students because they need to know how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) can lead you to a fulfilling and necessary career. Cheers to you both.
And BTW, I have some aspiring film students who appreciate the exceptional camera work and editing! Thanks for helping me show students how science is relevant.

This was a great video. It shows the hard graft that goes into running a business. The calls, the admin, the work, time management, STRESS, workshop supplies ordering etc.
What is evident is CEE is a sought after business and with that work ethic and attention to detail you will continue to have great success.
It is a real pleasure to be able to see you work through these videos which no doubt add to the workload.
I look at all the machines you have and my mind boggles at how much it must cost to run this business and purchase all the required tools/ equipment/ rent etc.
Lastly as an Australian it makes me proud to see fellow Australians leading the way and showing what we are capable of.

I can say, as someone in the Land of Bananas, who got out of the lighter side of the Mechanical repair business due to health reasons, we did not have nearly enough people who are able to do what you do, and it's only gotten worse in the last 6 years. We went from diagnosing and fixing the root cause of the problem, to firing the parts cannon at most issues and crying when we couldn't figure it out. We have gone from actual testing of components to needing a computer science degree to figure out that a fuel pump is failing. I lost count of the number of times we could have used someone like you who could fix a major failure of what you would consider a small to medium hydraulic cylinder for refuse vehicles and the smaller Caterpillar machines. and the welding and machining of other parts. Kurtis, I tip my........Christ, I can't even remember what cup of black diesel motor oil coffee I am on at this point. Regardless of what cup I am on, I tip my cup to you. Job well done sir.
The old scool knowledge is gone, and by that I mean no one wants to get dirty and learn old geezers knowledge anymore.
I'm a woodworker by trade. your video's are super relaxing. I would recommend them to any person with PTSD or anxiety issues regardless of whether or not they know anything about machining. Keep up the great work. I love that you continually invest in and improve your shop

Kurtis is a great teacher even though he doesn't realize it, I've probably learned more from your videos than everything I've seen on UA-cam. You just have a way of making things look simple. The highlight of my week is watching CEE. Love the coffee intro btw.

Cool too see the different time management compared to hobby machining channels. No unnecessary precision or overly cautious depths/feed rates here! And all these skills on top of machining: welding, specialized tools, optimizing throughout, forsenics, customer support, sales, logistics, accounting, acting...

As big as your shop is, I figured you had more people working, other then your wife, The four legged inspector & yourself.. Always a joy to watch.. A wise man once said "Hard work is a joy, I could watch it all day" Thank you for sharing..
