Ornamentation technique called damascene metal is of great antiquity, being the favorite decoration for weapons and armor from time immemorial. its not just the absorbance. it also has to be very light and soft as the gold is quite thin and rubs off quickly. sure we could probably make something equivalent but not much better. and it would take time and almost certainly be more expensive then bread.
