  • This is a 1996 promotional presentation from Apple Computer going over the planned features of Mac OS 8 which at the time was still under the Copland project name. After Copland was scrapped, some of the items featured in this tour did make their way into Mac OS releases while others never did. A later 1997 copy of the "Mac OS 8 Tour" shows what ended up becoming Mac OS 8 under codename Tempo.

I once read that Copland's NuKernel was actually ported over to Rhapsody for the 1997 Apple dev conference but they had also just completed Mach in time as well, so both were used in demos... But I guess technically the heart of Copland was completed for that.

@@netfreakcanada There's a channel out there with a bunch of full WWDC 1997 session videos; & I was surprised when during the Rhapsody "Blue Box" classic Mac OS VM session they used Copland / nuKernel to demo it instead and had to take a min to explain. The presenter said that their Blue Box VM had started under the Copland 4 months earlier and so it was farther along than the port to Mach, which had only started 3 weeks prior to the show. Pretty interesting to see it run... this is after it was cancelled and probably the last time it publicly demoed/shown. The demo consists of running 7.5 on a PowerMac, then rebooting into Copland, and going right into the Blue Box VM and showing that off. Video named "Apple WWDC 1997 Session 204 - Mac OS Support in Rhapsody's Blue Box" at 29:00 min mark. Most interesting thing was that it was stable enough to demo on stage and not crash. The presenter also mentioned that they had machines running this down on the show floor for devs to come test out their 7.x apps to see if they worked to test compatibility or find VM bugs.

I had an early developer build of Copeland. I remember having it run on my old PPC Mac for a few minutes before a hard crash. It was super buggy. Ultimately it was a fail so then CEO Gil Amelio scrapped it, bought NeXTSTEP which became OS X, and brought back NeXT CEO Steve Jobs to reclaim Apple.

9:50 Just like in KDE Plasma! 😂
Joking aside, it is still funny to
see that Apple, back in 1996,
had a very similar idea to make
    moving files between sub-directories quicker,
as KDE has had for many years now.
I was actually expecting something closer to BeOS's
"drill down" feature, where you would navigate sub-directories
in a tree-like context menu, available anywhere in the GUI.

    • @medes5597
      @medes5597 7 місяців тому

The drill down feature from BEOs can actually be seen in some videos of Copland from the Macworld where they unveiled it. It definitely seems like it was in some versions of Copland at various times.
It also gives you some idea how messy Copland was even when they were showing it off to new developers and Mac devotees not every build was the same.
Jean-Louis Gassée said that almost every feature on BEOs was based on something that was on his original list for Cooland features. When you look at that, you can see how much was added and taken away from Copland just by comparing it to BEOs.

Thanks for this and the Copland install demos. I wanted to install Copland on a 6100 until you showed that it was never even vaguely functional. I used to do some Macromedia Director work and you may be able to decompile the DIR files that make these demos and extract the art. Would love to these demos combined into a Director simulation of Copland.

    • @netfreakcanada

The fact that Copland is such a mess is part of the appeal for me. The first build is too broken to really enjoy but the last leak is one I'd like to keep messing around with. There's still really no point, but I suppose it's still neat technology.

It’s amazing to me how quickly many of the Copland features were able to be ported over to classic Mac OS to make Mac OS 8 after the cancelling of Copland. Some of these features took longer obviously; some never made it at all. It makes me wonder how much farther they could’ve gotten if they had better management at the time.

Sorry I am late to the party but nice video. This particular tour I still have on CD from when it was released. I don't remember 100% if I got it as a handout at retail or if it was included with a MacUser issue or if Apple mailed it out. I am leaning toward it was included with a MacUser issue. Cool demo and it is too bad they didn't stick with it making a modern version from the ground up. It is fun to think about what macOS would be today if they continued with their plans and actually finished the new OS vs reskinning/reworking NEXT STEP into OS X.

RISC was superior to CISC, BUT, things changed & it should be noted, Apple didn’t jump ship to intel until AFTER the pentium era, and the benefits of intel stopped just like with PowerPC, and now Apple is rejoined with RISC, though with the amount of control they could’ve only dreamed of in the 90’s ..

How many years was it that Copland hung over Apple? It was such a terrible time in Apple's history, even the devoted were feeling less enthusiastic. I recall there was some extension that you could install that would change the folder icons and do that diagonal opening graphic thing. I had that and thought I was clever haha. When Jobs came back and announced OSX it was the best recovery I've ever seen anywhere. I knew Apple had won then, an amazing time.

Yeah, I lost all hope in Aple when they came out with System 7 developer preview and it was a hot mess. A few kludges, like control panels that kind-of would open in the Finder, but not anything really useful, like cooperative multitasking or network drivers or multi-taskable Quickdraw without global variables. They were going headlong into bad ideas so I regretfully switched over to PC development. Which also had its primitive aspects but at least had great market share. It was lonely going to computer festivals and seeing maybe 10% of the tables were Mac oriented.

Yeah, Apple had a lot of grandiose and overarching ideas that would only work with industry-wide adoption, like OpenDoc. The idea was to have document-centric features, with perhaps multiple apps writing into the same document window. A fine idea in principle, that way you didn't need word processors with graphics editors built in, or spreadsheets with text formatters built in, a sane idea. Unfortunately that totally clashed with everything the industry and especially Microsoft was doing. There was no way Microsoft was going to cannibalize Word and Excel and PowerPoint to make them work inside an Apple document. So the idea was dead from square one. My boss worked for over a year to get our locally developed apps, including a Gopher client, to work with OpenDoc. It never worked well but no matter, nobody wanted OpenDoc or Gopher by then!
