For the last five years I thought this song was about a breakup, but for some reason, it’s only clicked with me now that it’s probably about death.
For example, I thought “she’s left me with eyes far too glossed” was referring to her leaving the house with tears in her eyes, and “when I see her my heart feels like a sinking stone” meant he saw her around town after she left him and he was upset he couldn’t talk to her.
But those lyrics make much more sense in the context of her being in the hospital and dying. I guess it can ultimately be interpreted either way but I think this song is even more beautiful now
