This is one of those manga(i have no idea on the anime, but I hear it holds true to the manga) that is surprisingly uplifting and then downright depressing. Sometimes I feel like this manga is bipolar due to all the mood swings, but it has a good story with interesting characters and a somewhat original plot. You should give it a try.
