  • Brass knuckles are banned in a lot of places, but fortunately these plastic versions are perfectly legal to own here. Pretty neat as collector's pieces or fun melon smashers after a stressful day. :)

    Here in Nevada I bought my girlfriend a pair of brass knuckles from a guy at a 'swap meet' stall who was quick to correct me when I asked to buy, "Those brass knuckles." He said, "No sir, that is a novelty paperweight."

      I've got about a dozen brass knuckles (well, steel, brass, iron and glass) in the UK legally. Can't get rid of them legally either. Can't carry them on the street. Can't sell them. Can't buy them. But I confiscated them working on the doors of a nightclub during fights. Now I'm stuck with them. Every time there is a 'knife amnesty' I chuckle because I'm on allowed to carry these to the collection point.

      +AnonEyeMouse You can get rid of them legally; just melt them down or chop them up. Not that you'd want to or that it makes sense, mind.

    I think a lot of the laws were made as excuses to arrest members of the criminal underworld, at least in some places here in the states. that way the could hold them for something small until they have a chance to get them for some of their worst crimes that the had been able to cover their tracks on. the problem is that at times these laws bite law abide-rs in the butt, like in california.

    • @DivingDonut
      @DivingDonut 8 років тому +28

      +jamcalx Don't think so. It's an open secret that most weapon charges are not followed through. Even gun charges do not get prosecuted. I belive those laws were made completely irrationally without any knowledge or thought.

    • @DivingDonut
      @DivingDonut 8 років тому +1

      CZProtton It really depends. In the US it appears to be, that heavier charges, for example illegal firearms, get dropped, while police is very eager to collect fines for smaller offenses. Here in Germany it appears this way, too, even though I do not have numbers on it.

    • @CZProtton
      @CZProtton 8 років тому +1

      Galgenvogel I am pretty sure that they do fight againts bigger offence aswell, but there is so much little "crimes" around like bad parking, jaywalking and so on that there is ofcourse a huge amount of fines for that. I do not know in Germany, but in Czech Rep, police need to give out a number of tickets per month. So... yeah. They sometimes fine you for jack shit just because they have to.

    I don't understand why if you wish the be proactive you basically have to play dumb and pretend like you don't want to be prepared in case of an emergency or else you will be seen as an attacker yourself. Do you have to use that same line of thinking when buying a fire extinguisher? Like "Oh, I'm just buying this fire extinguisher because it it aesthetically pleasing. Not to be prepared in case of a fire." Or, "the defendant claims he had a fire extinguisher in his kitchen in case of a fire. clearly, he had the fire extinguisher because he planned to start a fire sometime in the future. ladies and gentlemen of the jury, we are quite possibly dealing with a serial arsonist here." I don't get it. But then again I live in America, where if a police officer asks why i'm wearing a gun and I can answer "because it is a day ending in 'Y'." And that is a totally valid reason.

      U.S. is a polyglot nation, mate. A significant portion of the U.S. speaks Spanish as a first or primary language and UA-cam algorithms can't tell if you, a particular US citizen, speak Spanish or not. I suppose UA-cam programmers could circumvent this issue by looking at whether or not you use the Spanish version of your browser or UA-cam, but I suppose that wouldn't necessarily fix the issue for everyone since not all (primarily) Spanish speaking people will do that. Some may know enough English to use the English version of their browser or UA-cam but type in Spanish to search for videos.
      It seems like a non-issue, anyway. Most people hate ads.

    Heya Skall - Thank you for the thoughtful and realistic look you bring to the realms of weapons, self defense, and dealing with this crazy and sometimes violent world. I do have one comment that you might have covered before, but I haven't yet seen your full backlog. - I don't know how this woks in Canada, but here in the US, there are a lot of 'bans' and 'laws' that aren't regularly enforced. These punitive bans exist to provide prosecutors additional charges to drop on someone when there isn't sufficient evidence to put a bad actor away for a primary offense. For example, if someone is arrested after a domestic dispute, and the victim refuses to cooperate with prosecution, the offender will probably walk. However, if he is found in possession of one contraband or another, said guilty party may serve some time anyway. I can't say I'm necessarily a fan of this tactic, but I can sort of offer some empathy to the frustration of law enforcement who are trying their darndest to actually do the right thing, and get stymied when bad actors have good lawyers (which does sometimes happen).Anyway, Here's to you, and I hope your recovery goes smoothly.

    If you do plan to do an abuse test, please use extra caution like use an extended artificial punching limb to hold the plastic knuckles in place during the test.

    I live in Texas, so if somebody walks on to my property I could theoretically grab one of my guns (yes I actually have them) and shoot said person and get away with it claiming that I felt threatened. I also remember the guy who got away with shooting an "escort" here (here being Texas) b/c she "stole" money from him (even though she had probably just charged him) I think two days after the fact, not too sure but it was something like that....pretty silly
    The not being able to defend yourself in Canada is pretty silly and kind of pompous (why do you need to defend yourself if our society is so great?), but not as silly as the stuff here.

      +Tahkozz You're allowed to defend yourself, but carrying a weapon is a no-no. Technically you're not supposed to use guns for home defense here either but people aren't generally punished so long as they, say, didn't put 10 rounds into a guy, pausing once to reload. Its more of a within reason thing. IE you carry around a knife openly, not for self defense purposes... well not self defense purposes against people anyways, against coyotes on the other hand... but if you say used it when you got attacked, generally the RCMP would cut you some slack. Unless you got a particularly anal one working that night.

    • @DeNihility
      @DeNihility 8 років тому +6

      Well, that's a misconception. In Canada, we technically are allowed to defend ourselves so as long as it can be argued out in court.
      So for instance, if someone broke into my house and had intent to hurt me or someone else, I can defend myself with however much force I may see adequate. Yes, you can kill them if you have no other choice.
      However, you can't go attack
      them if they're retreating. You can also perform a Citizen's Arrest, hold them in place until police arrive.
      You also can't shoot someone for tresspassing unless they shot first.
      But in the end, it never hurts to have a good lawyer.... or wallet.

    These look interesting. That law is strange though, if someone knows how to punch with proper technique and uses one of these I don't know much difference it'd make if the knuckles were metal instead of high impact plastics. The unfortunate target would most likely get fucked anyway.
    I own a set of "traditional" brass knuckles actually made of brass, though I don't carry them(legal to own, illegal to carry out the house). Looking forward to you testing these, I'm interested in how the plastics fare in an impact weapon shaped like this.

But for knives, it is clear: most crimes are committed with regular knives, those same ones old pensioneers and young kids use to make food. If you want to ban weapons becouse they are dangerous, ban those. Criminals won`t obey the law anyway.

    Skall please don't hit coconuts with knuckle dusters, they have a tendency to split outward, sending the sharp bits into whatever delivers striking force. (and we all dont want to see you hurt again.)

    I have been edcing a Blackhawk barong for years now..around 7 years...the blade is nearly 9 inches. and I live in ontario canada..around out 45 mins from Toronto and I've never had an issue with the police..I have had a couple ask to see it. but never have they given me a problem. and I know it seems a bit large for edc. but it seems to be my favorite option. .however I do also edc a Leatherman charge. and as of recently a spyderco native.

    Single-finger knucks are awesome but harder to come by, and often times pretty expensive because they're often made to basically be bad-ass designer key fobs and EDC things.

    well I suppose, with metal, you are more likely to course heavy injury or even kill someone than with plastic.
    So there is some logic in making that distinction. since most metals are harder than plastic.
    Although, is diamond allowed?

    I don't know much about Canadian Law, but if the law there is at all similar to the UK there could be a couple of other issues with the legality of those dusters. Firstly if judges took the purposive approach to statutory interpretation they could argue that the law exists to ban this type of weapon, and that syntax loopholes could be discarded. And secondly, if there are any laws that aim to tackle offensive weapons (that is to say objects thought to be designed or adapted for the purpose of causing harm to others or their possessions), they could maybe be used to prosecute users.
    But again, that's me commenting with only some basic UK Law knowledge and even then it's shaky. Still something to consider though in case you're a Canadian that's aboot to run out and instantly buy some.

    This makes me wonder if any non-metal material is exempt, like a "wood knuckles". Also, what if you make only the part in the palm out of metal, then make the actual knuckles part out of a hard plastic?

    I know you said, "You're not allowed to carry anything for self defense." But I would go farther than that. Self defense is illegal in Canada. From my eyes it's there as clear as day. If you happen to break that unwritten law and do so with an object of any kind it often results in MASSIVE escalation of the charges against you. A case (in my town) last year involved a robbery that turned into a criminal attempting to stab a home owner to death. A person in the home used a bat to strike the attacker. Criminal received no charges because of the "assault" against him and the person in the house is awaiting court.In Canada if you are attacked, in any way, you must allow yourself to be killed or maimed. I have been told this by police, word for word, including the threat of penalties if I fail to follow that bit of advice. Many, many judges in Canada see people who defend themselves as "worse than the attacker." This has been said to be the case because the attacker is "desperate" but the victim has had a better life.Another insane case just for fun: Burglar falls and hurts himself while breaking into the back door of a home in Canada. The home owner is charged because the back porch was under construction and was not properly marked as such.

    When he was describing how to hold a pair of brass knuckles he should've just said hold it in the leopard pop position. Same way you would hold a pair of brass knuckles well plastic knuckles but same thing.

    Don't you just love the loopholes in the law? Some years ago I came back from overseas. I had a telescoping rod with a spring and rubber ball on the working end, confiscated. The huntsman dagger, with a 13 inch blade was ok.

    It boggles my mind that people are taken back by illegality of self defense in Canada yet it doesn't seem to bother them one bit that we don't have the right to own property.
