These nissans have a bad reputation for catastrophic CVT transmission failure, make sure you are changing your CVT fluid every 50,000 or so.

I have a 2016 Altima with almost 42,000 miles. I decided to change my CVT fluid at around 36,000 miles after reading many horror stories about these transmissions. I saw in the service manual that the fluid seems to be very sensitive to temperature, so I did the drain and fill on a morning here in Florida when the temp was around 60. Just under 4 quarts came out, so just added the exact same amount. My car does not have a dipstick, just the cap on top of the tube. I plan on doing a 4 quart drain and fill every year to keep the fluid fresh. Just bought some on Amazon and I think it was around $17 a quart for the Nissan NS-3 fluid. After the warranty expires, I may decide to use a different fluid. Hope to see more videos from you.

The Pennzoil CVT2 is the exact same colour and your Nissan NS2 at a much better price. NOTE CORRECTION: SOPUS is Shell Oil Products !! not Standard Oil, my mistake, my bad.

There's actually a process to measure the CVTF level, where you have to warm up the CVTF a little bit, park in a flat surface, push the ebrake, go to 1st Gear, take the dipstick out, clean it, put it back in and then take the selector to either N or P, then grab the CVTF level, which has to be between the 2 dipstick notches. That's how it's instructed on the FSM.

You ever recommend using a trans stabilizer fluid like Lucas?

I actually used 2 ounces since I already had oil in it. It seemed to quiet startup a bit. No harm. Motorkote would be better but don’t keep it in too long because of the chlorine I heard.

Pedro Maycock I would drain and fill immediately and examine the condition of the fluid.

Solid "how to" video. I think all of the Nissans made between 2008 - 2014 have had their CVT transmission changed/fail by now, Nissan should have recalled all of them. We have already put over 138,000 miles on the new/replacement transmission so I think Nissan fixed the problem. However, I've noticed all CVT transmissions require fluid changes more often than traditional geared transmissions, every 40,000 to 50,000 miles vs 80,000 to 120,000 miles.

So what’s the best fluid to use?

    • @claytonrodgers1609

@@shellybelle6781 What has worked for me is Valvoline Full Synthetic CVT ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid - in the blue bottle). It is both NS-2 and NS-3 rated covering all Nissan CVT transmissions. Also, being replaced every 40,000 it is also one of the cheapest options. With this being said any CVT transmission fluid that is NS-2 or NS-3 depending on your CVT transmission should work fine.
Also, our Rogue has over 160,000 on the replaced transmission and going great. 258,000+ total miles on the car.

I've just purchased a 2012 Nissan rogue 2wd. 43,000 thousand miles. I will take your advice and change it at 50,000. The vehicle was driven by a elderly woman. Vehicle is cherry and I want to try and avoid any unwanted issues. Great advise. Maintenance book says every 80,000. I will ignore that suggestion. I will also use oem Nissan fluid.
