I'm nowt exceptional. Like many, I have had direct, visceral experience of those close to me taking their own lives. This is still feckin' brilliant though. I'd go so far as to say thereaputic. Thank the lord(s) for HMHB.
My mate was a driver, he had a "jumper" go under his train. He is no longer a driver. Since then he has had bouts of depression, to the point he has stood on the platform of a station ready to jump.
Love HMHB but never heard this before. So, so funny. His sense of humour has cheered me no end of times over the years. Yes, suicide is a terrible tragedy, and yes, clinical depression is an awful affliction that ruins so many lives. BUT... human beings have wonderful coping mechanisms for the general unfairness and brutality of life and one of them is humour. Witness the black humour of the WW1 trenches or the people who work for the emergency services. Keep laughing, it's a good medicine.
Assuming that some of these unfortunate people who kill themselves in ways that affect the public or train drivers aren't deliberately choosing to 'inconvenience' the public as one last 'fuck you' to a cold uncaring world, does it not occur to people that in a suicidal state where a death as horrific as by railway is contemplated, they're not exactly thinking rationally. I have been on a platform as I was travelling anyway [I hadn't specifically gone there to do it] and it became an opportunity I could have taken and was strongly tempted by, the welfare of others sadly did not come into it, only ending my considerable torment at the time, it was complete tunnel vision. Most people have no idea of the hellish states the mind can conjure up.
Well that’s actually what the singer tells. “He thought of a love unrequited, and he thought of a life full of pain. It’s a pity he didn’t spare a thought for the poor driver driving the train”
I would say yes spare a thought for the 'poor bastard driving the train' but unless you've walked a mile in the shoes of someone who obviously has mental health problems and is suicidal, best to not make snide remarks. A woman in her 30s has just killed herself this way in Wigan (where I live) and the first comment from one guy I mentioned it to was along the lines of "Oh I have no sympathy for people who commit suicide." Nothing along the lines of "Oh I know it's terrible." Bit sad really. I like this band and have done for some time, although I would say their brand of over the top cynicism is a bit much sometimes. There is occasionally some pathos in their songs but it's generally drowned out by the aforementioned sarcasm. If they were a bit more heartfelt and less scathing, their humour would shine through better. Their lyrics are very good though; very witty and all that. Clever stuff and there's much to be admired and learned from them. I just think they have an obvious agenda which I don't always agree with.
I know It was two years ago, but , cynicism is what they do. I only found them by chance, or if you listen to Nigel , the fates led me, I like the things I hear. If you can do better, go ahead and try.
most underappreciated songwriter ever.
That'll be because he's the bastard son of Dean Friedman, I expect?
@@fatdaddy1996 Nine years late, but it's a good'un. Have a like.
This, Is why John Peel described Half Man Half Biscuit as a 'National Treasure'.
Knowing this band and their songs enriches my life. This one's got a Black Velvet Band vibe that is just lovely.
The lyrics read like Sir Betjeman. Wonderful

I think you should be at the Smiths Channel wearing some Joy Division Oven Gloves
I've tried to commit suicide and it was utter tunnel vision, no consideration went into it. I'm glad I'm alive and this is hilarious, lighten up

Brilliant song, especially the conclusion! When was the video of the train journey to Brighton made?
Robert Tolhurst I would say 79 maybe 80 going off the clothing and no brands in sight.
Yes funny .. but deep too.

Is this footage from the 5.45 Buxton to Manchester Piccadilly 'Shinkansen' service?

You can't make jokes anymore. I was cuckolded and don;t find that funny. Guess where I'll be.
This is my favourite song about suicide.
