    Gotta love the sail shape using the autopilot explanation!!!

      I'm sure all the racers out there hate what I was saying, but cruising's a different animal...it's important to not spill your coffee all over the galley! lol

    good words on wind and trim logic. i was just self taught on sunfishes and i used to keep a little 22 in florida for cruising out to the islands
    but i did read a bit about it off and on through the years
    nice to hear your thoughts, makes good sense and yeah wow what a perfect morning for a sail . have fun!

      That was a brilliant day of sailing! There's always lots of technical pointers from the point of sail racing, so thought it would be fun to talk about some of the practicalities of cruising for comfort and handling. Glad you enjoyed! Will try and talk more about sailing stuff in future episodes. There's lots to learn and lots to share!

      Hey Jim, yeah we wished we could have stayed around a bit longer...was just an overnighter then onward again! Looked like fun surf, but we were bent on getting to the next free anchorage ;)

      Saltwest Co Sailing it’s been a few weeks of great surf down here. Some pretty windy days too. Where you at now?

    I was taught to run dead downwind, wing on wing, by a top name sailing school. Went to North University (North Sails) two years later and was shown that broad reaching and gybing would get me downwind faster despite the extra ground. That doesn't work for every boat, but for most modern designs, even if it seems wrong.
    Have you run the polars, or tried reaching, to see if it is also faster for you?

    • @LearnToSailMexico
      @LearnToSailMexico  5 років тому

      The best deal for us running "downwind" is to have the wind coming from about 140 or 220 degrees (if the bow is 0 degrees) to the side that the genoa is polled out to, as the top of the Gen. gets filled up and the main is on the "windward" side, then we can run the jib inside/behind the main as well...so it's not dead downwind. That gives us the best performance for running ;)

    Another advantage to the three-mile distance is that you can empty your doo-doo. I don't recall hearing you say that. We're a composting toilet boat, so there is no pumping or macerating involved but that distance can be advantageous for refreshing the head.

      We actually don’t poop ever...we’re very clean people...lol. But yes, that would be the time!

      Try not to hold on to that standard for too long. As my gastroenterologist says, "There's more room on the outside than the inside" and "That's why there is a hole there, ya know."

      I was very fortunate to have all those formative years filled with practical knowledge and experience, the kind of shit you can’t learn in the course of a ASA training cert alone. Just the sheer number of years in the sailing environment and observing or assisting in the work and repairs has been invaluable in the development of our sailing “common sense” that, not unlike on land, is not all that common on the seas either!! Lol

    Where did u get your solar panel mounts?
    I need 2 of them for 100 watt mano panels.

    • @LearnToSailMexico
      @LearnToSailMexico  5 років тому +1

      They’re Magma brand brackets for clamping on to round tube. I had to fabricate aluminum flat bar pieces that i could bolt onto the solar panel frame, then bolt on the brackets to that flat bar. The panel frame itself is so thin, that alone I wouldn’t trust. Look for our video from back in the spring of ‘18, ‘Installing Solar on a Sailboat’, shows the setup in more detail

    Saw Morgan slip a bit after spraying at that Sea Lion, nothing like being out of your element during a showdown. Cannot give likes or comments from the Patreon page, not snivelling, and not not digging to watch you a second time. Will just watch on here though because the views from that page probably do not count here either... am i right ?

      @LearnToSailMexico  5 років тому +1

      Yeah she almost biffed it right there!! I'm sure that would have been the end of her, as all those lions ate her right there on the dock! lol. Is there a problem with Patreon's app? Normally, you should be able to comment and like videos right through patreon and yes views from patreon register as a view on UA-cam (since it's a linked video). All the same, just glad you can find us and enjoy the vids :)

    Worst camera work of all time.....even though he tells you what to point at (the sail....the huge flopping piece of cloth), you somehow miss it.
