You did a great job carving this character from white pine. Kudos to you! When I was a beginner woodcarver, I used to make all of my figurines with head straight forward and arms straight to the sides. Later I decided to turn their heads one way or the other, and either put their hands folded behind their backs, or have one of their hands holding something, while the other hand was in its pocket. And I also had his/her eyes looking to the corners instead of just straight ahead. All of these things brings character and personality to the figurines, and suggests movement, instead of a static, rigid, motionless pose. Sometimes just a little thing can create the illusion of movement, such as hair blowing in the wind, a side of the jacket/coat lifted by the wind, etc. I think you get the idea. Nonetheless, I appreciate you sharing your skills and carving with us. Thank you very much!
Thank you
Fantastic carving Kevin. Another piece of, what looks like the allusive kiln dried white pine, turned into a masterpiece. I wish I could find some place to get some. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you Laurie. The pine I use come from eastern Canada. Irving company I think
Excellent. Thank you for showing
I have sent for two wood handled kitchen knives and will shorten them to carve with. Looks easy but I know it will be a challenge to carve a wood figure. My hands will be weak at first, I'm sure. Carving will strengthen them. I'll follow your videos while carving. I'm also a left handed person. Thank you much. Jim
It will strengthen your hands for sure. Good luck with the carving
Thank you, Kevin.
Just when I think it looks perfect, you take another big chunk out !!! and it looks even more perfect... brilliant work again Kevin, thanks for sharing :)
Thanks man. I see you have another fantastic creation uploaded. I hope to watch it tonight. I also have a question. Do you use a GoPro for your videos? If so what editor do you use? Sorry, that’s two questions.
@@KevinCoates98 Hi Kevin, yes its a gopro 3+ black edition, i film at 1080 hd, iv had it for years and its never let me down, I use powerdirector 15 for editing, i find it easy to use but your computer has to be quite fast for it to work properly, i hope this helps bud...keep up the great work you do Kevin...cheers
Boa noite meu amigo
Que madeira é essa ou que tipo de tratamento foi feito prá ela ficar mole assim vejo que está esbranquiçada e quando você cortar e amarela
I always look forward to your videos, Kevin. I consider them a class being taught by a master craftsman. Thank you for teaching me to be a better woodcarver.
Thanks Harry. You are too kind
@@KevinCoates98 - Thanks for the response Kevin, I am just stating a fact. The truth is all that matters. When a man can take a knife and a block of wood and create as you do Kevin that is just pure talent, period. Keep the video`s coming to all of us novice`s Kevin, they do help people like myself that are trying to learn this craft. Have a great day, friend.
Kevin you do such beautiful work. I just happen to come upon your videos nd enjoy every one. Yo me it's so relaxing nd I like there is no talking in them. Your the greatest!!!
Thank you
You are a fantastic wood carver . 😀
Í watch it again and again and again and again and again..........and again and never get tired of it.
All the best,,Júlíus
Thanks Julius
Another great job. I wonder if you have all your carvings on display. I would love to see a picture if you do. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Jerry. I have sold the most of them
Es fantástico como trabajas la madera, me gustaría que vieras messi de madera. En fabito creativo. Saludos
Kevin is there any place where we could find patterns of your carvings?
I also wanna know if there is any web site has your patent Kevin
Very inspiring. You're an amazing artist and carvers. Ty for sharing. May I ask what carving tools do you use most often and which one show a beginner use such as myself?
Thank you. I use a knife most time. I started just using a knife years ago. Getting lots of practice is what makes the difference
Amazing. Fascinating to watch especially knowing that one false move could ruin the whole thing.
Thanks and it can easily happen
Always enjoy watching your videos. You make it look so easy. I notice you make your blanks fairly detailed to begin with. I would like to see you make the blank on your band saw from the very beginning. Just something to think about for a future video. And can you recommend a good source for patterns? Thanks!
Thanks Kelly. I put a video on a couple weeks ago showing how I do my blanks on the bandsaw. Carving the man from the sawmill. I do my own patterns. I don’t know of anyone out my way
Watch the video "Carving The Man From The Sawmill".
Hi Mr. Coates, do you sell any of your carvings? Love your videos.
Fantastic. If I may ask, how long have you been carving Mr. Coates? Your artistry is superb.
Really cool! Thanks for your video! =)
Thanks
Again beautiful work!
Thank you
Great work
Hi, Kevin. You are amazing at wood carving - I kind of want to BE you. Or like you when it comes to carving. I try to imitate what you do, but i need a good start, so I would very much like to know the measures in three dimensions on all the fantastic pieces you make. I mean in the beginning before you start carving. It would help a lot. Thanks anyway - you are the best, and very inspirational. Best regards from Norway.
Thanks Vidar. I put it in the description sometimes. That is when I remember to. The 8” figures I use a block of wood 8”X3”x2”. For the little ones 4”x2”x2”. That’s roughly what they are. I will try to remember to put it in from now on
Another great job..I have trouble with eyes so went to Michaels and bought some plastic ones..talk about looking goofy..guess practice of eyes gonna be answer..keep up firing the videos our way
Thanks Jack. Lots of practice for the eyes 👀
Great job !!!
Thanks Henry
Great job
Thanks
Sou Valdenir Grande admirador de seu trabalho, do Brasil
Hi Kevin love your work better than any photos they carvings are so realistic just wondering what is the best wood for carving from Jim in ireland
Thanks. I use white pine because it’s the most available wood here where I live. A lot of carvers use basswood. I assume basswood is the more preferred wood for carving. I haven’t used it enough to know
Hi Kevin. I’m new at carving and I love your videos. You do some really amazing things with that homemade
Knife of yours. If this figure is 8 inches tall. About how wide and thick is it? Thanks and keep up the great videos. We all love them.
Thanks, 3” wide and 2” thick
Ok thank you.
Lovely stuff Kevin
Thanks Paddy Pup
I've looked at the blanks on line. They are very expensive. What would you suggest for a beginner. Stan
Stan, I’m not much for drawing but I just draw a rough sketch on the wood and go from that.
Con qui coltelli fai di quelle sculture spettacolari.... troppo bravo 👏
Thank you
merci pour tout ce que vous faites c est magnifique on voit l experience
Thanks. You’re welcome
I also would like to know what's the best wood to carve?
I use white pine because that’s all is available to me. I’m thinking basswood is one of the better woods for carving though
Hello dear . I am following your videos from Iran . pleas tell me what kind of wood do you use , what is the name of soft wood . thank you.
Очень хорошо ! ! ! 👍👍👍 You need to cut the statue of Oscar and cover it with gold paint.
Thanks. 😃
Great job, where can I find the pattern ?
Thanks Scott. Most time I just draw a rough sketch on the block of wood and go from that
I think I seen a video of yours that showed when u first using that big knife that u cut it in half to use it to carve. Was that use to be a kitchen knife at one point??
It’s a fish knife
As you are left handed presumably your knife etc are ground for a lefty??
Not that I’m aware of. I just sharpen it to the best of my ability
Kevin, do you sharpen your knives before you start a project? They always look so sharp. And do you wipe oil on them to keep them from rusting? But since you use them every day, they don't have time to rust. Haha.
I sharpen them on the stone maybe once a week. I keep them honed often
Saw the instagram photo, had to watch the video!
👍🏻👍🏻
geniooooooo
Hola maestro, ?me puede decir que madera utiliza? Gracias
It’s eastern white pine
Can you please show how you paint
I have done videos with the painting. I will try to do another soon
@@KevinCoates98 amazing video always the best
i bet you kick some serious ass in thumb wrestling (bowing in admiration) 😉
Lol. Thanks
Quel et le bois du thieul ???
WHO WOOD???????PLACE
Are you a shipwright? You seem like one. Awesome job. I hope to be as talented and make it look so easy as you someday.
Never built a boat. Seen lots built though. With practice you will. Thanks
Cerco di copiarti ma con scarsi risultati a volte riesco ad intaglirmi le dita😂
Practice is key. I cut my fingers many times when I first started carving
Complete novice here. I wonder what kind of wood he is carving?
oh nevermind... lol
55:20 small mistake )
learn from mistakes!
Thanks?
@@KevinCoates98 I thank you for your work!
