This is so beautiful, it actually hurts. Prine's is the first covid death to bring the reality of the virus home. I'll always associate the first weeks of lockdown with John Prine.

My favorite Prine song. A beautiful time capsule, for a dark part of America’s history.

Prine is one of our country's great songwriters. This song is one such example. See today's article in the LA Times about his new record and his influence on American music. Prine in the man. I just love his music.

Damn, Amanda's voice is so good. The perfect counterpoint to Prine's here. Jason to the side like the most unobtrusive backing band-mate ever. This would have been amazing to see.

    Lyrics
    In an Appalachian, Greyhound station
She sits there waiting, in a family way
"Goodbye brother, Tell Mom I love her
Tell all the others, I'll write someday"
From an teenage lover, to an unwed mother
Kept undercover, like some bad dream
While unwed fathers, they can't be bothered
They run like water, through a mountain stream
In a cold and gray town, a nurse say's "Lay down"
'This ain't no playground, and this ain't home'
    Someone's children, out having children
In a gray stone building, all alone
On somewhere else bound, Smokey Mountain Greyhound
She bows her head down, hummin' lullabies
'Your daddy never, meant to hurt you ever'
'He just don't live here, but you've got his eyes'
From an teenage lover, to an unwed mother
Kept undercover, like some bad dream
While unwed fathers, they can't be bothered
They run like water, through a mountain stream
    Well, they run like water,
    Through a mountain stream
