This was a fun event. I used to work at Disneyland 1985-94; I moved away and in 97 was living in Paris France. I was asked to come to the event since I knew it. When I got there for rehearsals, they still had my sweat-stained name-tag from 93 in the collar (I was a Cinderella court dancer). It was surreal. Most of the performers came from the local Disney stores; only about 1/3 of us were veterans from California. It was an unpaid event for us (but not for the drivers and wardrobe who were shipped in from California as they still worked for Disney). The parade is only designed to run 25-30 minutes. But we were on the street for almost 2 hours. The poor kids in the costumes had never worked in them and almost passed out as they get REALLY HOT inside. It was a great event nonetheless!
I was working for the 5th Avenue store at the time. I was "friends" with Dumbo that day, and yes, it was quite the experience - one I will never forget. Many of the floats ran out of battery before they reached the end of the route and were dark. I'm glad I had the opportunity to participate. This video was shot by my Brother in Law, and despite the large crowds and darkness, I was able to spot him in the crowd and Dumbo spent quite a few extra seconds waving at the camera :)
You know what made this so cool and rather emotional? There are so many families that could never afford a Disney vacation and this gave them a beautiful taste of it
I worked at the Disney Store that was at 42nd Street right next to the Amsterdam Theater. After the parade finished the store re-opened and massive crowds flowed into the store. It was like Christmas Eve but on steroids! That crowds kept coming in for hours and you could barely move. A fun memory though! I loved watching the crowd’s excited reactions during the parade.
For so many New Yorkers, this is probably the closest they'll ever get to Disneyland or Walt Disney World. As much as you hear the crowd cheering, video still doesn't quite capture the electricity of being there.
interesting fact: the version of Smee's rowboat in this video is the one from 1985 (his current one debuted at DCA when the parade started there in 2001)
@Danny Eyheralde what happened to the Normal MSEP floats after this parade? Were they put into Storage or were they completely destroyed (with the floats from the 1999 WDW version being New builds)
@@peppergaming8794 the bulk of the floats went to Florida for 2 years of refurb and an additional 2 of performances. 3 of the floats (Diamond Mine & both Pleasure Island units) were shipped to Disneyland Paris. they returned home I think in 2006 but were not seen again until 2009. not too sure on what happened to the 2 Herc floats.
I imagine this would've been an unusual experience for all of the float drivers... Driving down an actual street as opposed to the tight constraints of the Magic Kingdom or Disneyland parade routes..
And don dorsey recorded the 1979 underliner and the parade units from 1977 and 1985 and paul beaver and jim christensen recorded the parade unit music for dumbo, cinderella and to honor america from 1972 which was still used until january 2009
She led the parade from 1972-2009. Tinkerbell replaced her in 2010-2016. Her leading the parade was probably due to the popularity of the Tinkerbell movies. Since the 2017, 2019, and 2022 MSEP runs, the train now leads the parade. In Tokyo, however, The Blue Fairy still leads the Electrical Parade.

@@Dumbogal I remember hearing Pinocchio's float lost power before step-off.

29:40 my favorite part seeing the parade as far as the clock tower

for some reason i think the vocoder announcement is by the same person who does the announcements for MSEP at Disneyland Paris
no it's a different person. i'm pretty sure Bruce Healey did it for this project as he also recorded the music for the Hercules floats.
