Trium Puerorum (2021) Luis Meseguer Mira

The story behind the music:
Akash Bashir. He became volunteer for the security of his parish, St. John's in Lahore (Pakistan). A man carrying explosives tried to get inside, but Akash blocked the way and grabbed hold of this man. Akash' final words were 'I will die, but I never let you through'. That was 11:15 in the morning of 15 March 2015. He was 20 years old.
Michael Nnadi. He was a seminarian from Good Shepherd Seminary in Kaduna (Nigeria). On January 8 2020, he was kidnapped along with three other students. The other three were released, but Michael was murdered, according to his captor, because 'he continued preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ' and 'told him to his face to change his evil ways'. Michael was 18 years old.
Matthew Ayariga. On 15 february 2015, ISIS published a video that shocked the entire world: the beheading of 21 coptic men in a Lybian beach. 20 of them were Egyptians and their names were known, but 1 of them was not. He seemed to be from a sub-saharian country. Later, some friends identified him: he was Matthew Ayariga, a migrant worker from Ghana. He was probably not coptic (who knows?), but when he saw that their mates were to die, he accepted to die with them. Some sources said that their last words were 'Their God is my God'.
The text of this piece is taken from the Book of Daniel. It tells the story of Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael. They were three young men of the court of the Babylionan king Nebuchadnezzar. The king had erected a 27-metre sculpture of pure gold and ordered all present to prostrate themselves before it. The three young men, who were Jews, refused and preferred to be taken to the furnace. As the flames did not burn them, they joyfully sang an hymn known later as the 'Trium puerorum' or 'Benedicite'.
'Trium Puerorum' is my musical offering for Bashir, Nnadi and Ayariga, who are our contemporary Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael.

Akash Bashir. Se hizo voluntario de la seguridad de su parroquia, San Juan, en Lahore (Pakistán). Un hombre que llevaba explosivos trató de entrar, pero Akash bloqueó el camino y se aferró a él. Las últimas palabras de Akash fueron: "Moriré, pero nunca te dejaré pasar". Eso fue a las 11:15 de la mañana del 15 de marzo de 2015. Tenía 20 años.
Michael Nnadi. Era seminarista del Seminario del Buen Pastor en Kaduna (Nigeria). El 8 de enero de 2020 fue secuestrado junto con otros tres estudiantes. Los otros tres fueron liberados, pero Michael fue asesinado, según su captor, porque "siguió predicando el evangelio de Jesucristo" y "le dijo a la cara que cambiara sus malas costumbres". Michael tenía 18 años.
Matthew Ayariga. El 15 de febrero de 2015, el ISIS publicó un vídeo que conmocionó al mundo entero: la decapitación de 21 hombres coptos en una playa de Libia. 20 de ellos eran egipcios y se conocían sus nombres, pero uno de ellos no. Parecía ser de un país subsahariano. Más tarde, unos amigos lo identificaron: era Matthew Ayariga, un trabajador migrante de Ghana. Probablemente no era copto (¿quién sabe?), pero cuando vio que sus compañeros iban a morir, aceptó morir con ellos. Algunas fuentes dicen que sus últimas palabras fueron "Su Dios es mi Dios".
El texto de esta pieza está tomado del Libro de Daniel. Cuenta la historia de Ananías, Azarías y Misael. Eran tres jóvenes de la corte del rey babilónico Nabucodonosor. El rey había erigido una escultura de oro puro de 27 metros y ordenó a todos los presentes que se postraran ante ella. Los tres jóvenes, que eran judíos, se negaron y prefirieron ser llevados al horno. Como las llamas no les quemaron, cantaron alegremente un himno conocido posteriormente como el "Trium puerorum" o "Benedicite".
Trium Puerorum" es mi ofrenda musical para Bashir, Nnadi y Ayariga, que son nuestros contemporáneos Hananías, Azarías y Misael.
