Actually they’re prone to a genetic illness in their knee joints called a “Luxating Patella.” Unfortunately, the shiba I was supposed to adopt 2 years ago had it, and I had to turn her down as it would be a few thousand dollar surgery for an 8 week old pup.

My girl was very easy to train. I’ve always described her as an “easy puppy.” As far as other dogs and people, she’s fine if we approach them but she does not like people or dogs to approach us. She honestly looks for my reaction. She has a 20 ft tether we use for outdoor activities sometimes. She has shown the most aggression if approached while using the tether. I think without someone right by her side, she has the perception that she’s alone. However, she is easily redirected. Regardless of the situation I’ve always been able to calm her down and show her there’s no threat.

I've never met a Shiba outside Japan but not surprisingly they are like their Japanese owners. They are wary of strangers but very attached to their owners. Possible this is a result of a lack of socialization. Japanese rarely invite outsiders inside their homes so Shibas just don't meet many people. They're generally very calm and kind of aloof. The one that lives near me has the softest fur that I've ever felt on a dog. He basically tolerates my presence and allows me to pet him when he wants.

they were very calm and collected, most of the time they let me and others pet them but every now and then they just hid from people and I could tell it was because they just didn't want to be bothered and they were super nice overall
never once made a noise except when excited and never went up to anyone to beg for food or tried to steal food from a table when we had BBQs and parties before and after the cross country seasons

Shibas are much smarter than their owners expect. They will track your behavior.
And know when they can get away with things you don't want them to do.
Which includes digging holes under fences to go exploring in the spring...
They very quickly come to the conclusion that they know things you don't and will use that to their advantage.

Some folks I met at a week long get together had one. We went into the local town one night for kind of a change of pace dinner. I rode with them and sat in the back with their Shiba Inu. When I got in, he was clearly pretty standoffish and had zero idea what to think of me invading the back seat of his car. The couple said he would probably ignore me, but that I shouldn't let it bother me, he does it to everyone. 15 minutes into the 30 minute trip, he rested his head on my leg and had no issues with me petting him. On the trip back, he just curled up in my lap and slept then entire way. Both the husband and wife were absolutely floored and said they'd never seen him react to anyone else that way.

I have three, they are the best dogs I've ever had. The pandemic baby is the only one who is wary of strangers because she couldn't get much socialization as a puppy, but the other two just want to be everyone's best friends. They're sweet and loyal and care for the pack (me included) in ways I have not seen other dogs care. They're definitely great pets if you have the patience and the willingness to learn how to deal with this little guys' attitude.

I had a Shiba-Taiwan Dog mixed breed called Rocky, it was basically Shiba with boosted reflexes and be even smarter. He's got that Shiba attitude, lol! One moment he is happily playing catch with you and then suddenly he would be like "nah, I'm done." stands by and watch the ball roll away like it's none of his business. He was very friendly toward all people but hated any dog that stepped into his turf, but if you talk to him tell him this is a good friend he'll tolerate that dog. Rocky passed away at 12 years old, we sure miss him a lot!

Shibas have an ocean of difference between them.
Ours loves spending time with us, hates touching his paws, sheds like crazy, has a cute yawn where it sounds like he’s talking several times a day, HAS to have a gift to give you when you get home, spins over and over when excited, rarely barks, gets super nervous around strangers. Runs when you change your garbage out, runs when you put bright colored clothes on, is always up for chasing a ball, when he knows you’re mad at him he goes into freak mode and starts spinning and acting goofy trying to perform for you. Among other things.

Sirius is a very sweet dog, and one of the few dogs I actually like (cat person, lol) because he’s so calm and reserved. He’s a good pet, especially for my sister who doesn’t like being alone. He’ll keep you company even if he doesn’t want pets, curling up at peoples feet, and is always respectful towards my nibling. They definitely require careful consideration if you don’t have a yard to let them run around it, but they make excellent pets for the right people.

I've had two Shibas. Back in 1996 I located a breeder in Arizona and. We picked Saki up at our local airport, having her flown to us when she was just 12 weeks old. Three years later we
drove 300 miles to Colorado with Saki where we left her over night at the home of a champion stud owner. I've never seen anything as cute as those four baby Shiba pups from Saki's only liter. Of the 3 females and 1 male we decided to keep one of the little female pups naming her Kiren. Having some experience with Shibas by this point, we realized just how important early socialization is with this breed.
Before they were even a week old we started the pups on a desensitization program. At least three times a day we'd separate the pups from their mother long enough for them to get a little hungry. Then before bringing mama back in to nurse them, we'd spend about 15 minutes handling each pup, paying special attention to holding their paws and nestling their little noses right up to our face to familiarize them with our touch and smell. The pups quickly learned to associate this handling time with the reward of being reunited with their mother and nursing. At two weeks old we started transitioning the pups to bottle feeding and by their forth week we had them fully weened to a bottle, and we were either physically holding the pups or keeping them right next to us almost 24 hours per day.
It was a lot of work but the difference was night and day. Saki, the mama lived to be about 16 years old and even near the end we could never trust her not to run off if she ever got out of the house off a leash. By contrast we were able to train Kiren to always stay within 20 to 30 feet of us when taking her on a walk without a leash, and not to leave the yard, even without it being fenced in. I've never talked to another Shiba owner who could say that.

Thanks for mentioning the dog aggression. This cannot be overstated since combined with the fearlessness it can lead to your Shiba being badly injured or even killed. I heard from a breeder once that the first breeders to bring Shibas Inus to the USA were Akita Inu breeders. The Shibas would get into fights with the Akitas and since Shibas don't ever back down the Akita would often end up killing them. This led to Akitas gaining an unjust reputation for being killers, but it was really the Shibas goading the Akitas into it.

I would love to have a Shiba one day. Some friends of mine showed them and had two, a red and a black and white. They had immense character and I was hooked! We already had two Norwegian Elkhounds, who seem temperamentally similar. They're independent, aloof, will do things if you give them a good enough reason, absolute nightmares to let off the lead (in that they can be great 99% of the time, but if they see something more interesting, they're off) and shed like crazy. Given all that, I think I'd have a good grounding for being a decent Shiba owner! Maybe when I retire. It'll certainly keep me fit to have a fizzy pup around! We also have a secure dog field nearby that can be rented out. ATM I have a Border Collie cross who needs to be constantly touched and an insecure Jack Russell Terrier rescue. I love them, but I do love the independence and standoffishness of a Spitz.

And, let's not forget to mention how absolutely, phenomenally, insanely smart they are.
My shiba not only took off his collar when he felt like it, managed to slip his leash on another dog when he did so, but habitually unlocked his three-stage crate, unlocked and opened doors, and would occasionally mimic words (albeit, with a whining, soft howl that made it clear it wasn't human). They can, and will, teach you just how not-child/shiba safe your house is within the first month or two.
But they're also clever, very capable of being trained, can live in houses with other pets (if you socialize them early and thoroughly), and take to discipline well (if it's consistent... they will test you to see if a rule still applies).
Absolutely loved my shiba. Little guy was a part of the family that certainly helped to make us all better people.

He's hardly playing nicely with other dogs. Meeting two dogs at the same time is impossible. I don't really know at which moment it went wrong, but we try very very hard for him to have the best life. And tried to correct his behaviour, but something is just wrong. He's very sweet with us, but it's hell at some times when you go on walks. If you hesitate to take a Shiba, please don't and reconsider. Especially a male.

Shiba Inus are similar to Akitas but smaller and less fluffy, and slightly easier to train and keep.
They are basically Akitas with less, well, Akita…

I like dogs that listen, are easy to train, affectionate and love to always be by your side, basically your shadow. Sounds like the Shiba is not the dog for me.

I'll never forget the opening of a Dogs 101 segment on the Shiba: "Are you looking for a dog that is easy to train? Look somewhere else". I may have gotten the exact wording wrong, but that was definitely the message. And it is true. Not because they aren't intelligent. If anything they are too intelligent. My Shiba would figure out what I wanted her to do before I asked her to do so and already have 10 strategies in mind to avoid the situation if she didn't want to do it herself.

Shibas are not “aggressive”. They are standoffish and like their space, and if a dog messes with them too much when they don’t like it they will snarl a bit and just be “moody” as a dog. But that’s not “aggression”.
And socializing them is very easy actually but it’s easier to do when they are younger

Shiba inu is the best dog breed i ever have. They need mutual respect, not just like a dog who follow ur orders blindly. They are cats in dog costume. Independent. Brave. Quiet. Dainty. The side eyes. Clean.
My shiba is now 13+ years old, whenever i come home late, he is the first who scolds me 😂 like where the f were u? Lemme smell u. Damn girl! I don't like that dude. Get another one 🤣

  • @radhasen.animalwelfare.5644

All dogs and cats can be 'good pets' if their owners handle them with love and understanding from puppy days and train them from the start.
I believe with love, care and patience all domestic animals can be trained and moulded.
Dobermans & German shepherds were used as killer dogs to guard the concentrarion camps.
Well, my mother's GS and 2 huge Dobermans were like gentle lambs because we raised them that way.
It all depends on the owner to raise their pets well, give them them security And a at able environment and be calm and sensitive to their needs.
And if they are witness to domestic violence and shouting they are likely to end up aggressive or very frightened.
The ssme applies today raising kids...

SI are very demanding and need a lot of attention.I tried to train her but had little success but she has trained me to do what she desires. I walk her 3 times a day and she loves meeting people on her walk. She loves big dogs but is not good with little snappy dogs. Requests to pet her are constant, picking up my granddaughter from school means at least 5 or 6 little girls are on their knees petting her.

Let’s be fair. Their behavior isn’t that misunderstood by other owners. They are not that good at socializing with other dogs and other dog owners can easily see this. That part is not a misunderstanding. If we all ignored this behavior, there’d be a lot of problems. It’s always best to error on the side of caution than not when coming across other unknown dogs. Shebas are stubborn and have a lot of dislikes and that’s ok. But lots of other dogs and owners dislike aggressive behavior given to them when doing nothing wrong. This is good because it helps to keep everyone safe. Shebas are not the only ones like this but this is a big part of their typical temperament with other pets. Socializing does not mean it’s important to do so with other dogs only. Socializing means with all environments, types of people, things and places. The more you do this early for them and keep it up, the better they can be at all socializing. They will never be perfect with other pets, but there’s a lot we can do with their daily requirements to help them do their best…exercise, mental stimulation, training, socializing, eating healthy, vet check ups, quality time with owners, jobs and/or sports they and their owners enjoy, grooming time, comfortable and safe living environments, and having owners who want to and choose to be knowledgeable, and keep them protected, happy, healthy and safe. ❤

One more thing to keep in mind when getting a Shiba: a lot of vets are terrified of the breed. I've had multiple vets refuse to see my Shiba unless I muzzled her, even when she was a tiny puppy and litterally limp from illness. Even when I unfortunately had to put her down because of illness the vet wouldn't come near her until she was muzzled. They just didn't seem to understand that their fear for my dog was what was setting her off in the first place. My advice: when adopting a Shiba, visit your local vet often without anything actually happening. Discuss this with your vet and help the vet and dog get used to each other. This will highly increase your chances of your Shiba and vet getting along and thus ensuring your Shiba gets the proper health care it deserves.

I live in Japan. Most of the dogs here are shibas, and I can honestly say that they are HORRIBLE dogs. They always try to attack my gentle dog (a much stronger Hokkaido ken - which would make short work of a shiba in a fight, as they're bred to attack bears). I strongly advise against this particular breed.
