    Some Modern treatments aren't much better.
    Using Radiation, you know the stuff that KILLS for Cancer treatment that usually doesn't work and can kill you before the Cancer sometimes. Then they charge those desperate families 10s of thousands for killing them sooner or maybe prolonging their life a few months in pain.
    Or the lobotomies of the 20th Century. No need to explain this one.
    Or vaccines that have caused Autism.
    While we have come a long way and the above treatments do work SOME of the time, we still have a lot of improving to do.

      TheJarmag So, taking a pill to fix a headache, but ending up with cramps, explosive diarrhea, with a chance of heart failure, respiratory problems, is the best thing to ever happen? Medicine in a nutshell.
      (I'm just making fun of it lol ever seen the commercials that advertise Viagra, Humira, etc?)

    • @EleMexican
      @EleMexican 9 років тому

      yeah but no pill ive ever taken has caused any of those problems thats like saying here have a hayfever tablet GONORRHOEA CANCER!

    • @Davd35
      @Davd35 9 років тому +2

      Radiation can cure cancer permanently if caught early the probably is most people don't wanna be told they have cancer. On lobotomy you are right they were gruesome at best. Finally no solid scientific proof has never proven ANY link between vaccines and autism.

    • @shadowsnake9004
      @shadowsnake9004 9 років тому

      Actually the vaccines don't cause autism

    0:35 Trepanning was partly successful in some cases because it released the pressure which the brain exerted on the skull. E.g. when having a tumor or an infection.

  • @CharlesTheClumsy
    @CharlesTheClumsy 10 років тому +3

    These tricks might have worked since placebo is a thing.

  • @RobertChisholm
    @RobertChisholm 10 років тому

    Trephination was used for all that crazy stuff. It was also used relieve swelling pressure from head wounds or remove pieces of bones from fractured skulls.

  • @jaclynbrockschmidt3604
    @jaclynbrockschmidt3604 10 років тому

    Trepanning actually had a practical application. The Incas (I think?) for instance, used it to reduce fatal swelling in someone's head. This would commonly be an issue for their warriors as their weapons primarily consisted of rocks attached to sticks.

    I'm so happy not to live in those times... just imagine having a migraine and then the doctor says that he must drill a hole in your skull for curing it...

    • @robertdeford7762
      @robertdeford7762 10 років тому

      I've had migraines so severe, that I have actually wanted a hole in my skull, just to relieve the pressure I felt. So it doesn't surprise me that they believed it was a viable solution.

    •  10 років тому

      Robert Deford There's a difference, the doctors you went to see weren't trying to let the demons out of your head but to relieve the pressure, at least I hope so haha
      But I can see your point, I'm not surprised they found the hole in the skull a viable option to cure migraines as the pain was in the head, they only needed an excuse to drill a hole in it and thus spirits in our head were born.

    Blood-letting actually works, when done right, to take down fevers. I also hear it's easy to go too far. I think I'd prefer sucking on tree-bark that contains salicylic acid (aspirin).

  • @Raeliquae
    @Raeliquae 10 років тому

    I think the information presented here is quite misleading, especially over trepanning. In Mesoamerica it can be said this procedure was used to remedy "evil spirits" but not so in classical Europe and Middle East. The surgical procedure was known at and after the time of Hipprocrates, he himself wrote of the dangers of the procedure such as bone fragments and infection but it was under Galen that it became more widely used in the classical world. A famous procedure used in the Roman Military.
    Given that head trauma such a blunt force to the head places pressure within the skull that could result in death, trepanning was a means to release that pressure. Evidence showed that those who did survive, new bone grew back to cover the hole.

    People here keep mistaking "ignorant" for "stupid." Human reasoning, especially with a subject as complex as our physiology, takes time to evolve and advance to how we think today. You can't have someone from the third century contract a disease and suddenly start thinking genes and injections. Hell, we barely understood our physiology until a little past the last century, so of course they'd try things that we know are utterly stupid today... As for the Dutchman guy, who lived in the sixties, yeah, that's pretty stupid.

I remember him mentioning that he had recently gotten something like a glass white board a while ago which is physically in front of him and he prints out custom stickers to put onto it. Then uses editing software to add in some small animations.. I hear its only compatible with Darude Sandstorm though :p
