Chevy Bolt EV Summer Range Test

- Come with me as I take the Chevy Bolt EV through 183 miles of summertime driving. It was really hot out and most of the drive was spent at 70 miles per hour, but the car still did pretty well.
Here's a link to my winter range test:

5:18 as a fire fighter I really appreciate this public service announcement. Don't just do it for government officials do it for everyone cause if you don't then we get called and then you really gotta move over and slow down (our department has portable speed bumps)
Virginia and North Carolina have the same rules too. Move over or get a ticket. If the way is clear move over. Safety first!
@@MsKewi-NYC Here in Canada the fools refuse to move.
@@dimitripapadopoulos5180 We have plenty of those here too
Illegal where I'm from in Canada now. Must move over and slow down to half speed or face big fines
@@Josh-cw8by yeah it's the same rules in pretty much every state in the US too. Doesn't mean anyone follows it. I've driven in Canada too, just as many slow pokes in the left lane.
I normally refuel with gasoline every 300 miles. That's like once a week based on my normal driving needs. I'm more convinced after these videos that a switch to an EV is not too much of a stretch.
Even now they are getting better. I -- a condo dweller of south florida -- still cannot switch to one in the foreseeable future, but there is hope. Now which comes sooner, switching to an EV or me leaving this hellhole? lol
@@acephantom903 you still wanna leave
@@TylerTMG Just had to pay $4k additional this year from condo insurance increases and $1k additional for auto insurance increases. Yes. Somehow need to save the money to leave.

You have such calm sarcasm for road rage. Ride with me in my wrecker and you'll learn a few words lol
I'm always bewildered by the size of the roads in the USA.
Cormy SyStem we have tons of traffic.
Big country, big people, big roads.
Fat Fuck Americans driving around in Big Fat Fuck 11MPG American Cars
Yeah the roads and cars are bigger because everyone is so fat
Cormy SyStem
This guy is mostly driving in the suburbs. Those roads were designed around the car. Cities such as boston, new york, philly, Chicago, etc have more narrow streets. Not as narrow as the old European streets, where that bolt would nearly fit.
Damn how do you have time to do UA-cam with drives like that for work
Waffle iron...I'm sayin lol
Nice job recommending people to actually be courteous and move over for someone on the side of the road. I had a car come too close for comfort once when changing a flat tire.
I really appreciate how observant you are to everything. I also notice small things nobody cares about but I like that!
That is great that they have a shift interlock for the charge cord! There have been people in traditional gas engine cars accidentally drive off with the filler hose still attached and they ripped the hose off of the pump! That can't happen with electric.
A couple years ago, I saw a van on I-90 with a gas pump nozzle and hose still in the filler. It was doing about 70mph and the driver was oblivious.
I had an original RAV4 EV back in like 03, and it also refused to shift into gear when plugged in, so I assume it was discovered pretty quickly that people weren't used to being plugged in at home, so the interlock was important. However: the parking brake was manual, so if your garage was ever so slightly sloped, you could release the brake and begin to roll backwards. Even though the connector just kinda slid in (there were no latches on that charging cable), and it was on the front, the cord connected at a 90deg angle, and so could still cause tons of damage.
Totally not speaking from experience, though. (it was caught in time, but still a scary event)
Going Bolt-ly where no EV has went before 😉
just realized that the Bolt EV looks an awful lot like a Car i made on Test Track at Disney World once.
It was a fully electric car too.
Chevrolet, i expect royalty payments.
It was made by a dog...He was in a talkie on the big screen, get it right !
Thank you for using your indicator.
It's 120 miles to Chicago, we've got a full battery, half pack of cigarettes, it's dark out, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Thanks for the review. I heard it while working as a process server in Phoenix, who drives crazy miles in my Bolt. The temperature was 110F and it definitely takes a toll on range, but I still have plenty. About once every other week, I have to top up at a level 3. Most of the time I leave the house with enough to do my work. I will admit to a little hypermiling, on occasion.
From a fellow Suburban Illinoisan, Thanks for this. Always was a little worried about Electric vehicles in conditions like where we live. But this shows that I have pretty much no reason to worry. Love your videos!
“On the highway, there’s no braking going on...”
Oh boy, just wait till you drive the freeways in LA.
EVs are wonderful for rush hour traffic though. Good video on range anxiety.
I honestly appreciate the metric annotations
I've enjoyed all of your videos about the Bolt. Great car; I'm planning on buying one later this year.
Thank you for providing conversion to the metric units! A person who lives 15-20 minutes from you (: Your videos are great to watch, I only wish there was any chance to have a discussion with you in person
I know this is an old video but really enjoyed it.I was lost in your world and forgot about mine for awhile.luv u man!
Thanks for the metric units. I understand and can comprehend feet and inches but I don't have a reference/understanding of miles, gallons, pounds and so on.
A pound is 454 grams so at small scales thinking of it as half a kilo is a reasonable way to get a sense of scale, sure it's about 10% off but that's probably not much worse than the estimate error a person would typically have if you just dropped a pound of stainless steel in their hand and asked them to guess the weight so at human scales it's close enough. Also miles it's about 5 miles to 8 km roughly. Gallons however are a pain in the ass because there are multiple different units commonly all simply called a gallon that mean different things.
People only really "get" a unit when they use it on a regular basis. It's a bit like learning a language. When you start speaking that language more fluently, you think in that language rather than translating from your native tongue. I know that a meter is roughly 3 feet, but I don't "think" in meters. It might be helpful to give you an idea based on everyday examples:
- If you buy your milk in one-liter bottles, one of those weighs a little over 2 pounds.
- Four liters of milk would be roughly equivalent to a US gallon.
- Walking for 5 minutes would cover about a quarter of a mile, assuming you walk at the average speed of humans, about 3 miles an hour.
- The average speed limit in European cities is about 50 KPH, which is roughly 30 miles per hour. US highways have a maximum speed limit of 70 MPH, slightly slower than the 75-80 MPH of Europe's average (120-130 KPH). Most people speed, though, which I find irritating.
All this being said: _why can't the US just convert to metric._ I'd be happy to learn a new "language" of measurement if it meant conversions were that easy. How many feet are in a mile? I don't know! _Nobody_ knows! This entire country Googles it!
Do not write KPH because it means Kilo Per Hour! Correct is km/h.
KilometrePerHour is also valid and you will see it pretty often.
I have never seen KPH in Europe! It is always written as km/h.
Watching from Austin, but you're in my old stomping grounds. Grew up in Mendota, shopped in Peru/Ottawa, and worked in the burbs. Enjoy the channel - keep it coming!
Thank you for putting metric alongside
I like how it won’t let you drive while plugged in, my mobility scooter has the same safety feature!
I like these videos they are different then the regular in the house videos.
I have a 2020 Chevy Bolt and I love it!!
You got me. Though I have street parking half the time, I bought a Volt. Wow what a nice car. It was used so was hugely depreciated. I'll never buy a gas-only vehicle again.
Thank you for the metric and celsius units! made this severely more enjoyable!
No matter what video you post, if you mention an EV, there's going to be a bunch of posts about how people will never buy an EV because of $edgecase;.
Yep. But I hope at least _some_ viewers will realize I spent more than three hours in the car at highway speeds without needing to charge, and still I am recharged by morning. Hopefully at least a _few_ people will put two-and-two together.
You'd think. It's surprising how committed some people are to saying how it can't work, though.
All those edge cases are all perfect examples of the “But Sometimes!” effect as demonstrated on this very channel!
TC, I really can’t thank you enough for the “But sometimes!”, it’s a wonderful thing to keep in mind.
EVs really benefit those households the most that (A) have more than one vehicle (B) have charging available at home where the vehicle is parked. (C) Drive 50-100 miles at least 5 days a week. This list is a huge number of households and represent the 'lowest hanging fruit' to EV adoption. If you meet all 3 of these criteria, get an EV an start saving money on fuel and maintenance. Once we start getting EVs in the garages of single family dwellings, then we can figure out how to help the on-street parking and apartment dwelling folks. Around this time, the secondary EV market should be a bit bigger and it should start to become more clear just how much easier and cheaper it is to drive electric and it will no longer will make financial sense to keep driving a gas powered car every day.
+Zzyzx Wolfe I've heard everything from solar panels would have to cover the entire surface of the Earth to generate the power humanity currently uses to EVs require more oil to produce than ICE cars. You gotta laugh it off sometimes.
Over here in the UK, we have many rest stops (or what we call Service Areas) which were built over the road, mostly in the 1950s and 60s, it's kinda cool to sit there and eat your food watching the traffic racing past... Also it may interest you to know that *every* UK service area has at least 2 AC fast chargers provided by the utility company Ecotricity as part of their electric highway scheme. I enjoyed this video a lot and laughed at your commentary! :)
I realize this is an old comment but there are federal laws in the US preventing most commercial activity in highway rest stops. 80 years ago when the system was built, people were worried that drivers would bypass their town if they could eat and fuel up on the road. It resulted in travel plazas being built near exit ramps so they didn’t save their towns anyway.
Cool that your boss lets you plug in your car. I once worked at a place that wouldn't let you plug in your phone.
Props to you that you included conversions in video
One of your better productions, covered just about any question that could come up on the issue of using an EV for long range transportation. I live in your general area so it’s also nice to see and hear your comments and frustrations about our wonderful (facetious comment directed at IDOT and the ITA) Interstate and Tollway systems.
I'm blue, da ba dee da ba dai...
And what the state of Bad Noise calls an "oasis" is more commonly referred to as a "rest stop" or "service plaza".
Oh, well I knew _that_ (that rest stops exist elsewhere). I was more wondering aloud if the bridge/overpass configuration is used elsewhere. After some research it appears Illinois is almost the only state where these exist:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_restaurant
(or at least the only state aside from Oklahoma that's represented in that list)
There is one in North Korea (it's shown about 2/3rds of the way down the page): thevelvetrocket.com/2014/02/08/the-lonely-highways-of-north-korea/
Interesting!
Technology Connections we have some like this in Britain, but only a handful in my experience.
In my travels, it seems that not only are those exclusive to Illinois, they're pretty much exclusive to the Chicago area and most notably the Tri-State tollway in particular. I've traveled the entire length of I-70 across the southern half of Illinois and don't recall ever seeing one there.
I have never seen anything in California resembling that Oasis stop. We certainly have conventional oases and we could use more of them because it's hot, dry, and if you get stuck, the first thing you need if you can't get out of there is water and then some shade. There are rest stops sometimes in remote areas, particularly if you go to drive across the desert where there isn't much else. A lot of places just have the occasional town so they mostly leave people to stop there if they need to do so.
I always enjoy your EV videos, mostly because of how real yours are, unlike everyone else who "hate" EV because it is "too difficult."
On a somewhat unrelated note, how do you write your closed captioning? I could never figure it out in Premiere with trying to export CEA-608 and it cutting off the last parts of sentences or with Open Captions only exporting as closed captions sometimes.
Even though I am not deaf, I watch with CC because it helps me understand the video better and your CC quality is always so good compared to most community-contributed videos out there!
Last I uploaded to UA-cam, there was a handy video editor that allowed you to auto-generate cc and go back over it and correct any mistakes. An extra step, but time effective.
A polarizing filter in front of the lens will reduce those nasty dashboard reflexions. I always use polarized sunglasses when driving which makes those nasty reflexions go away. I can really recommend it!
I'm pretty sure polarized sunglasses and LCD panels in modern cars don't add up particularly well - tilt your head slightly and you can't see damn thing on your dashboard.
After testing with lcd monitors, to my suprise, it works pretty well with lcd screens as long as you keep your eyeline in the horizontal.
Whatever works for you, then :)
I legit thought UA-cam was your full time job, so I learnt lots today!
It's just as much fun to watch you review a car, than it is to watch you talk about electronics gizmos and stuff... great work!
I love the sarcastic commentary about other driver. Especially the front license plate. Their so many chumps that don't know front plates are required on cars registered in Illinois.
i love this road rage more than anything
9:53. That beautiful sarcasm. I love it!
you commenting on other drivers is the best, i coul dwatch that all day
Your road rage is so much like mine i'll just be all like "Nice turn signal, jackass"
I watched the whole thing. I have intention of driving or ever buying a car. But your voice is just so damned easy to listen to!
Thank you so much for consistently putting metric units up on the screen!
You've got the best dry humor ever.
Also we've got rest stops here in Minnesota, sort of the same thing although I haven't seen ones with restaurants in 'em. But I haven't seen most of them.
Lol, my Land cruiser gets 190 miles out of a tank of gas on a good day so well done
I live in central Maine, rural and we have some pretty wicked winters, but I have some pretty short commutes. After watching this and the winter driving video, I will consider an EV for my next purchase. Thanks for these videos
Just got a used Bolt with only 7300 miles on it and I love it so far. For the price one I include gas savings you can't beat it. And it's fun to drive. Your not taking it to a race track, but when you need to get moving the Bolt just goes!
i'd suggest polarizing filter for that dash cam, would really improve the quality of the recording by eliminating windshield reflections
Thank you for posting the Celsius at the start there. Just had to post this... my mind started to wander (even though i know the conversion) then that got me back on track lol. -edit- also loved the text reminder for closed captioning (my girlfriend is a native hindi speaker). I think I geek out when people are considerate and take the time to assist others in a basic way with actions or information.
@ 6.02 In my Mitsubishi Minicab Miev ev I just couldn't stop myself from slip streaming that truck. with that in front I reckon I could get far better that my 80kl/50mile range. PS thanks for the metric conversions.
One great way to save on power, use the active cruise control and sit behind a truck :-D
Of course, the efficiency losses are bad for ICE vehicles too, it's just that petrol (gas) is too cheap for people to care. That's a problem. I also did a comparison of 'idling in traffic consumption' - an ICE car typically uses 1.8 litres (0.4 gal) per hour which is about 25km (16 miles) per hour consumption. A typical EV uses about 5km (0.8 mile) per hour. Another win for the EV!
And in grand IL style...The O'Hare oasis is now closed as of Jan. 2019
This is the second video you have posted that gives real world conditions here in the mid west. Thanks much for that. The only criticism I have is the noise while in the car. Very hard to hear you. Had to use the closed caption which I don't want to use, but otherwise very well done.
183 miles for $5.50... My wife's VW TDI SportWagen gets about 40 MPG on her commute, and Diesel fuel right now is a bit pricier than normal -- $2.95 per gallon in my area right now. But it's normally around $2.75 or maybe even $2.70 per gallon...
So let's say, best-case scenario, she could drive her car 183 miles at 40 miles per gallon and fill up at $2.75 per gallon... That's still a bit over $12!!! And her car is *very* efficient when compared to most cars of that size.
I just wish you could charge the Bolt as fast as you can fill up a fuel-powered car... We pretty regularly travel greater than the Bolt's 238-mile range in one go. Several times a year, honestly. So the money we'd save by owning a Bolt would be wasted on renting (and fueling) a wagon or SUV for those trips. Man, I wish they could make an electric-powered car that could be charged from completely dead to 100% full in 5 to 10 minutes... Whoever figures out *that* little trick is going to be a multi-billionaire.
This. I'm always astonished when TC does the math on how much his commute costs. I mean, $5.5 for almost 300 km of driving is hecka cheap.
I have had a VW TDI before. Your concerns about saving money on fuel should not be your focus. The reliability and super high maintenance costs for a TDI will cost a fortune. The Bolt has basically no maintenance costs except rotating tires. The Bolt EV will kill a TDI off the line and all the way to 100 mph. The Bolt will also out handle your VW. 95% of your drives will be in range of a Bolt, so why focus on the 5%.
Many are working on it. I think it involves capacitors instead of batteries.
Battery packs wear out much faster than your wife's diesel. You're much better off with the diesel. Far cheaper and more environmentally friendly than driving a current EV.
Thank you for displaying metric units.
Glad you're not driving in the passing lane. Not surprised, but I always like to see good lane discipline. Consistent signaling is also a courtesy many seem to have forgotten, or maybe never learned.
You are so Gloriously Nerdy, and I love you for that!
You have the exact same dashcam as I do. That startup sound is unmistakable.
This is like if David Mitchell did Top Gear... Subscribed.
I have been to the Belvidere Oasis in Belvidere, IL, I have also driven past the Belvidere assembly plant.
I’m from the UK, and I’ve heard that Americans are really bad at using highways properly (as in moving over to the outside lane except when overtaking), so your driving was very refreshing. I mean, people in the UK often sit in the middle lane of a 3-lane motorway, so I’m not saying we’re a lot better - but I’ve heard highway driving in the US is just terrifying.
10:07, fantastic example of video frame-rate on wheel rotation! The wheels of the car passing you look like they are spinning backwards.
Look i know its hot but WHERE IS YOUR JACKET !?
He DID say it was 35°C outside :P I wouldn't be wearing a jacket in that kind of heat.
Yeah it makes him look dynamic.
I SAID MANS NOT HOT!
I enjoyed your driving commentary during this video. It's great to see a youtube star doing everyday things instead of in front of the camera. Enlightening as always!
We have an oasis on the I90 in Angola, NY. It isn't built over the highway, rather it is built in between the two directions of roadway with parking lots on either side and a footbridge over the road connecting to the main building. Since I have only ever seen that one I figured it was a rare find.
Oh hey, I've never seen anyone who mentioned the Angola Oasis. I live only a couple miles from there, and yeah, I've never ever seen another one off those two-direction Oases.
For the neophytes out there wondering where you would charge an EV if you had one, have a look at PlugShare.com to see the available infrastructures around you.
You can also filter for your particular car type. The trip planner is also very nice.
The best EVs are yet to come, I guess?
I only charge mine with the super fast charging station using the SAE Combo connection! Charges up to 180 miles in 1 hour! I've been averaging 120 miles in an hour with moderate temps in the 70's.
Only? Yikes! Please make any future buyers of your EV aware of this practice should you ever sell it.
Thanks for the video. Stop and go in town doesn't increase range because of regen braking, it increases range because it takes less energy to propel the car and wind resistance is less.
Also, cabin heating and cooling percentages are relative to average speed. If you go 20 miles per hour the cabin conditioning percentages will go up and if you do 70 mph average they will go down.
The ohare oasis has since been removed because the road needed to be widened. But there is still one of those in Belvedere, Illinois. There used to be 8 of those until o hare was removed. One even used to have a hotel in it.
Hah cool I live right around the Joliet to Morris area. Saw the Morris exit. It's cool knowing you share my pain. haha
a dash cam with a properly calibrated CPL filter over the lens would greatly cut back the glare and dash reflections.
I'm loving the snark in this video.
There is an outside!?
Also, more seriously, that first road has so many expansion joints!
Pretty sure those aren't called expansion joints. Expansion joints are what you have at the ends of bridges. All road concrete has those seams, but old concrete like what's under that asphalt tends to buckle and cause bumps.
Roadsguy In the UK at least, an expansion joint is a joint between two slabs of concrete on a road. It doesn't necessarily have to be on a bridge.
Yeah, the roads like that tick me off so much. And then sometimes, especially on older ones, the tires going over the joints will impact the concrete panels and start to tip them, so for every single concrete section you're going up a small incline and then dropping off it onto the next section. (This was my experience on I-44 outside St. Louis.)
I visited Milwaukee a couple of years back, and whilst the roads were much better than the UK, I remember the cla-clunk, cla-clunk, cla-clunk of the joints in the concrete freeways. At home in the UK, most of our roads are asphalt, with regular potholes to rip apart your tyres and suspension ;)
Not expansion joints. The county fills cracks in the road with tar for temporary, or as is in most cases virtually permantly
When we visited Chicago about 10 years ago we were surprised to the oasis stops, never seen one before. We stopped at that one next to O'hare on our way out. Ate breakfast watching the cars go under us. Weird experience.
The toll plaza on the Will Rogers turnpike on I-44 in Oklahoma is like the Oasis.
Every time I see you switch into the 60:1 hyperspeed mode, the only phrase that goes through my mind is "Turbos, buddie!" ;-)
9:52 My god! You're my spirit animal!
We have an overpass oasis in Oklahoma in Vinita on I-44. Has a Kum and Go, Subway, and McDonalds.
I'd rather follow a truck doing 25 mph than one that takes the ramp too fast and overturns.
Cool video! I would buy an EV like the Bolt if my financial stars were aligned right.
I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining that he was going that slowly. Mainly I get frustrated because there is a truck at all! I can't ever manage to take that ramp without a truck being there.
9:37 You’d be the first to complain about that same truck laying in the ditch because he took that ramp too fast. Don’t hate on someone for being safe at 80,000 lbs.
Can I just say what a beautiful front yard
lol I used to live in Peru, as in the one in South America. That was really a cool place.
I appreciate the metric conversions. Plenty of American youtubers don't.
we should convert to metric. i dont think its better than imperial (or worse) per say although it is simpler but the rest of the world uses it and every industry uses it so why not standardize it?
In Michigan we have a hyper-tunnel to Hell.
Presumably it's paved with good intentions?
Big fan of the passive agressive road rage
I love your very civiliced and humble road rage ;)
9:52 at least they signaled in advance to announce their intentions, rather than signaling to announce what they were doing at that very moment. Seems like the opposite is more common where people move over and only turn on their signal once they're halfway into the lane.
Taking the Turnpike (I-80) is always fun when I pass through Illinois, because those oases are so much better than your typical service plaza. In Ohio, they have to build a mirror of the service plaza on either side of the highway, so their budget is stretched more.
Some day I hope to have a job where I can travel by road more, because I personally enjoy long highway trips like these.
A Chevy Bolt EV is literally the only car I would every think of buying from Chevrolet.
15:57 it's so they can pull almost any car over for speeding. Speed limits are messed up around the city
19:36 I haven't seen them in any of the states along the West Coast or in the Southwest (I don't recall seeing those on the East Coast either). All I've seen are either government built and maintained rest stops off to the side of major roads with one on one side and another on the other or truck stops lining the roads leading away from an exit. The rest stops tend to have quite a few people and are almost never completely deserted, but are mostly just parking spots for cars and big rigs; a few sketchy bathrooms, a couple of vending machines, space for people to walk around a bit, and maybe some information about the history of the region or a small monument.
I have seen so many people who drive exactly like that 4Runner did.
At the height of terrible gas prices in California and when I also drove a 650 cc single cylinder motorcycle, I could comfortably get 120 miles on the 2 gallons of gas in my main tank and then I had a half a gallon on back-up but I had to turn a switch to access it. I shifted to neutral, flipped the switch, and then shifted back into 5th gear on the freeway one time. At that time, gas got up to $7 a gallon here but that was around the end of the GW Bush presidency and that's the highest price I've ever seen for gas here, outrageous since I started driving when most gas was 69 cents a gallon.
I also get back home from work at around midnight. I feel your pain.
19:25 I take road trips across the country every year and never seen one of those. Looks like they combined a toll line with a truck stop. Normally they put the truck stops on the inside of the toll line down the road between 500 yards to about a mile in. You also don't see many of the more commercial truck stops outside of the east coast. Usually once you hit Kansas is where you start no longer seeing those at all and all you get are the generic bathroom truck stops.
Haha, the dig about the front plate on the Tesla.. dork 💕
5:11 thumbs up for that
