I’ve been reading A Series of Unfortunate Events for the first time and I’m loving it- easy to read, entertaining, written well. Can’t recommend it enough
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is so up Rainie's alley. I love old Hollywood gossip and falling down that rabbit hole so a fictional version of that itched that part of my brain. I'm not great at focussing long enough to read multiple books a year but this was really easy to get into.
I worked in a library for multiple years and I found that people often made the mistake of attempting to jump from no reading to a thick, textbook-like work of non-fiction and then gave up. If you want to ease into reading, you can start with a book of short stories or find a book that is very similar to your favorite movie. Start with something less than 250 pages, perhaps something written for young adults (as they tend to be written to keep the reader engaged.) When I would meet a kid who "hated reading" I would immediately ask them what their favorite tv show, movie, or video game was. If I could find a book similar enough, they would read the entire thing and come back for another book.
honestly, not just because he's a friend of the trypod, hank green's "an absolutely remarkable thing" is SO fun and interesting (and has a sequel called a beautifully foolish endeavor which is ALSOO very good)
@@MP-Vancity Honestly I didn’t replay to get the numbers right. But this failure to correctly represent the countdown could be the launchpad to this channel’s viral explosion which won’t ever happen and even if it did I wouldn’t do a video exploiting that and psych this is a level higher and I’m super going to exploit those views and likes and actually fuck you. You don’t deserve my like. But maybe you do? Oh god.
Book Recs: I used to read a LOT when I was younger and found that when I’m in a slump now that reading YA books in particular can really help me have fun with reading again if that’s your thing! Here are some of my go to faves from all genres though if you’re interested: -A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson -Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan -The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer -Book Lovers by Emily Henry -Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid -The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson -The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid -The Cruel Prince by Holly Black -Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood -Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu -Something Real by Heather Demetrios -The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin -Just Listen by Sarah Dessen -They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera -The Face on the Milk Carton by Caroline B. Cooney -The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic Now all these books are all over the place so I’d recommend looking up the genre, rating, and triggers beforehand just to be safe but would say these are all amazing if you’re looking for something to read!
Agree! I was going to say the same thing about wanting to read more and starting with YA books. I've been reading Goosebumps books before bed to wind down. I grew up with the original 90s series so they give me a comforting nostalgia, they're simple and quite short, and they've continued writing them so there's a ton I haven't read. Also, I've been getting them as ebooks on my tablet from the local library 😊
British person here - you want real Doctor Who, go to the Christopher Eccleston episode of the little boy in the gas mask. Iykyk. Still traumatises me today.
@AlexandriaSimos genuine nightmare fuel 😂 can't remember what the episode is called but the scene where the old man's face becomes a gas mask, lord take my soul🫠
@@rosiewoodgate2112 Canadian here. Watched from the beginning of Eccleston all the way to current. That was also very traumatizing for me- and the mannequins coming to life episode. hated it. Faves were the royal family are werewolves, and the teachers being bats that sleep at the school
@IvypoolandBluestar oh I love that episode with Sarah Jane and K-9! I remember watching the 4th Doctor on PBS with my dad when I was young, and Sarah Jane was the companion then. I teared up a little that episode because my dad had been gone about 5 years before the reboot.
The book that got me back into reading after like 4-5 years of not reading at all was 'Before The Coffee Gets Cold". It's about a cafe that lets you time travel, and it's kind of like 4 short stories set in the same cafe, so it makes it much easier to read because you feel accomplished after finishing each individual story. But it's also all connected and IS one story. I cried at the end. I've also read the second book based on the same concept called Tales from the Cafe. So good. Excited to read the other 2! Alsooo, yes, the episode is called Blink, and it is definitely one of the BEST dw episodes of all time.
Okay booktok has entered the Trypod. I think you guys would CRUSH Fourth Wing or A Court of Thrones and Roses. It’s for the girlies, it’s for the guys. It would be so fun to listen to your reactions to the plot twists, the fighting, the romance, the SPICE! I left 2nd try to come comment this on UA-cam and going back to finish on 2nd Try 😂❤
I love the set up of one side being the two competitive bros and then the other side is just Keith minding his business and having fun. They remind me of kids in a sandbox LOL Thank you for this segment, Rainie!
Gateway drug books for me are books that I just can't put down that end up inspiring me to search for more like them. Off the top of my head, "Project Hail Mary," "Birdbox," "The Hunger Games" series, "Holes," and "Graceling," come to mind. I also want to include the "Broken Earth" trilogy in there but it's definitely not light reading- it just happened to bring me out of a years-long reading slump and absolutely floored me with how good and unputdownable it was.
Legends & Lattes legit got me back into reading after struggling to keep my attention long enough to finish a novel for several years. Imagine a D&D character retires and wants to open a coffee shop. But along the way she has to defeat one last bad guy. The cozy romance fantasy genre is having a moment right now and this book is one of the ones that started it.
9:04 I've been getting back into reading myself and truly the best habit I've trained myself into is reading an easy book, then reading something challenging, and after that jumping back to an easier read. The alternating keeps me going--feeling rewarded by feeling smarter with the challenging books, then feeling good because I can tear through the easier books faster!

Public librarian here, so of course I had to add my book recs! And of course I had to coordinate them to each of the pod members: - Rainie - I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy. For something lighter and more fun - It Happened One Fight by Maureen Lee Lenker. It’s a old Hollywood-based romance, so I think Rainie will love the drama, the setting, and the fun banter! - Miles - For the advice guy himself, I have to recommend The Age of Magical Overthinking by Amanda Montell. I think Miles will enjoy Montell’s exploration into human reasoning and how to find ourselves in an unreasonable age. TBH, I think he’d love any of Montell’s books - they’re funny, practical, and such quick reads for being nonfiction. Keith - If Keith is enjoying a little science fiction moment, I HAVE to recommend Kindred by Octavia Butler. It is dark and tough but also so readable, so it’s perfect for someone who doesn’t read super often. I also think Keith would appreciate the mix of science fiction, history, and deeper topics. For a lighter read (and one that Becky would also probably love) - One Last Stop by Casey McQuinston. Still has those science fiction elements and deeper topics but also includes steamy romance and is a quicker read that it looks! I also think he’d love the NYC setting. Zach - I have to recommend one of my personal favorites - Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Leigh Allen. It’s got Bigfoot (?), a lesbian cult, a Bachelor spoof, and so much more. I think Zach would love the fun, absurdist horror elements throughout. Plus, another great quick read (shortest on my list so far)! For the pod as a whole, I think you’d all love A Long Stretch of Bad Days by Mindy McGinnis. It’s a YA novel about two teens who start a podcast looking into the “long stretch of bad days” - that includes a tornado and a murder - that happened decades ago in their small town. It’s a mystery that will keep you reading, and it has such a great story of friendship at the core. Happy reading!!
I'd recommend an easy YA book, maybe something by John Green or Alice Oseman. They're always a good length and have something for everyone, romance, drama, relatability. Oseman's Loveless is my personal favourite
Reading a book you would have been assigned in middle/high school but missed is a really great way to get back into reading. There are a lot of “required reading” lists out there. But it’s a great way to start out easy but interesting!
As a Bookseller: AUDIOBOOKS ARE READING!! read an audiobook! It's much easier to find the time to do it becuase you can do it while you do other things, like drive or do laundry or clean your kitchen and suddenly you've read 15 minutes or even more in one sitting. Read an audiobook!
Red White and Royal Blue was my gateway drug back into reading for enjoyment! I'm an incredibly jaded grad student who hadn't read for myself in years after only reading the books in the curriculum.
“The Blacktongue Thief” is the book that got me BACK into reading!! Dark fantasy, world building but not overwhelming and funny parts. Can’t recommend it enough!
re trypod book club + reading more: i work at the public library and highly recommend getting a library card and visiting your local branch! getting a card supports the library system bc we're funded via cards and branches usually have lots of displays with recommendations. especially recommended for miles and keith as parents bc the library almost always has a regular storytime program and a ton of kids books (+ some have toys and play areas)!
Book Rec that is top tier!! The series name is Murderbot, book 1 is called All System Red, author is Martha Wells. There is a sci-fi plot, in book 1 revolving around mining of a planet for scientific purposes. But the main thing we focus on and follow is Murderbot! It is a sec unit that has hacked its governor module and pretends to work like its programed to whilst trying to do as little as possible to watch its favourite TV show and binge media. Highly highly recommend. Everyone i've given this book to has loved it!
I think it’s really important that people don’t only read frothy books. Read things that challenge you - the prose doesn’t have to be difficult but the topics might be less lighthearted. Anti-intellectualism has gotten pervasive post 2020 and people are engaging their brains so much less in their interactions with media.
As a chronic book worm, I love that more & more of the tri-team are coming into their reading era. I’m literally looking at my bookish merch right now!
dude like actually genuinely if you wanna read but you need to retrain your brain to enjoy it, i highly recommend picking a book that is also a movie that you’ve seen and enjoyed. that way the plot won’t be difficult to follow, but the book will probably give you much more detail than the movie did and it’ll feel worthwhile. the hunger games in particular is a great series for this. i flew threw each of those books in 2 days
This is genuinely the only podcast I listen to every episode. It makes me laugh every single time ALSO KEITH ! you have to watch more of the 2000s Doctor Who. It's definitely not just for teenagers 😂 though it is very cheesy at times, there are also a lot of scary, heartbreaking, or trippy episodes
Aside from waiting for the podcast weekly, I'm also highly anticipating for trypod theme songs at the end of the shows!! fun and hilarious episode guys! always love when you geek out of something sciencey😊🤓
Yellowface by RF Kuang has been my recent fave, its technically really serious but reads as lighter then it is, I highly recommend, or Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson, that's been one of my favourite books for years and it's so ridiculously hilarious and enjoyable and gave me so much strength throughout the years
i would LOVE a silly literature book club, everything i've been reading for the past 3 years has been so gothic and heavy. also, doctor who is literally the perfect show for keith, it's actually shocking he hasn't watched it all...
Fiction: Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series Non-Fiction: Stanley Tucci's memoir, Taste Loved Blink! And for a good ugly cry, Vincent and The Doctor. (also, Keith - I once had a bowling score of 9. 🤣)
9:04 If we’re looking for simple literature, I’d suggest either Jeffrey Archer books (very pacy) or ‘The Travelling Cat Chronicles’. If you’re not into novels, I’d suggest O. Henry’s Short Story Collection.
For book recs, Haunted House by B. Allen! It’s poetry, but really easy and accessible poetry and tells a great story throughout. Only 60ish pages too, so very quick to get through!
Books for Zach: Quick reads Silverwing series - Kenneth Oppel Rule of the bone - Russell Banks Books for Raine : The Giver Trilogy - Lois Lowrey The Blue Helmet - William Bell
I recently talked about this after listening to an episode of the Brain Leak podcast where they talk about it but this year I discovered audiobooks and I am in LOVE with the format!! love that I can “read” while commuting / out on a walk, but can also sit down and follow along if I wanted to treat it as an activity. adhd break life hacks !!!
So we did this experiment off the side of my high school football stadium. I built a little paper box carriage attached to 8 balloons. It would have safely floated to the ground but we did the experiment like 4 weeks after we turned them in and my balloons had deflated. So this one girl made one that was like a reverse umbrella thing. Hers floated away towards the practice field to the point where we had to chase it. Mine would have taken 7 seconds to float to the ground. Hers was in the air for 7 minutes...
The Selection Series by Kierra CASS was my gateway drug into reading as a kid, and even though the reading level is lower it’s worked for both of my parents to get back into reading too. It’s a reread series for me!
Just finished reading Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguch which I finished in an afternoon. Excellent! (also as a Doctor Who person who has seen every episode ZACH IT'S CALLED BLINK COME ON MAN but also Classic Who is a hugely different vibe but it's totally a show for children lol)
I was introduced into Doctor Who back about 9 years ago, and i still currently watch it. I loved the new season, but I also love going back and rewatching it, would love to know which Doctor ends up being Keiths favorite. As for books, tiktok got me into A Court of Thorn and Rose series, I love Sarah J Mass as an author overall her books are amazing.
I used to read. Struggling to get back into it but the Midsolar Murders series by Mar Lafferty is great so far. Earthlings, aliens, hive mind hives of space wasps, and a woman than solves murders simply because so many happen around her. Series starts with Station Eternity
The Atlanta ETM show was so fun! I have beef with miles though bc he scared the shit out of me when he jumped down the stairs when he came to the balcony
For easy reading books look for classic middle grade books that have stood the test of time. They usually cover deeper themes but are written much more accessibly. Great for children and tired adults. Like Hatchet by Gary Paulsen or Judy blume books Or for fantasy, look at tamora pierce or Garth Nix. Both have really developed fantasy worlds with consistent internal rules and stakes but are written in a very sparse, straight forward way that's easy to read and visualize. For some quick but great contemporary literature reads I recommend This is How You Lose the Time War and Piranesi. I enjoyed them both immensely and they're short enough that the time investment doesn't seem overwhelming so it's easier to start!
Some of my favorite books are The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series!! The way they’re written are so fun and whimsical. My other favorite book is The Book Thief. It’s historical fiction during the Holocaust and will make you cry, but is so beautifully written. Turtles all the Way Down is also great, I finished it in a day.
Zach! Put Down Sapiens! Now, The “Dark Olympus” series by Katee Roberts is my current guilty pleasure. Modern retelling of certain mythology couples. They’re definite page turners.

this is truly so amazing, I feel so lucky I get to witness the inner child of these men come up with these silly things, Rainy you are a mastermind
I'd recommend Project Hail Mary or The Book Thief
55:35 The background music 😭😭😭
As a chronic book worm, I love that more & more of the tri-team are coming into their reading era. I’m literally looking at my bookish merch right now!
Tuck Everlasting is my comfort book - I recommend it to anyone who wants to read a short book to get into reading!
dude like actually genuinely if you wanna read but you need to retrain your brain to enjoy it, i highly recommend picking a book that is also a movie that you’ve seen and enjoyed. that way the plot won’t be difficult to follow, but the book will probably give you much more detail than the movie did and it’ll feel worthwhile. the hunger games in particular is a great series for this. i flew threw each of those books in 2 days
the podcast is just becoming rainie babysitting and trying to come up with tasks to keep the kids busy. I'm so here for it
they need to have shayne topp on the pod so he can recommend them good books !!!
This is genuinely the only podcast I listen to every episode. It makes me laugh every single time
ALSO KEITH ! you have to watch more of the 2000s Doctor Who.
I kind of want them to read Fourth Wing. Becky would love them to read that 😂
I agree with Zack. The Don’t blink weeping angels episode is the episode to watch to show someone
Yellowface by RF Kuang has been my recent fave, its technically really serious but reads as lighter then it is, I highly recommend, or Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson, that's been one of my favourite books for years and it's so ridiculously hilarious and enjoyable and gave me so much strength throughout the years
i would LOVE a silly literature book club, everything i've been reading for the past 3 years has been so gothic and heavy. also, doctor who is literally the perfect show for keith, it's actually shocking he hasn't watched it all...
i'm now convinced that Johnathan is the funniest person at this company
Murder in the Family by Cara Hunter is FABULOUS and it’s written has a script of a tv show with fun graphics and insane plot twists
Fiction: Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series
Non-Fiction: Stanley Tucci's memoir, Taste
Loved Blink! And for a good ugly cry, Vincent and The Doctor.
(also, Keith - I once had a bowling score of 9. 🤣)
Oh my gosh, "Give it to me Tucci!", that is right up Zach's alley.
Pls start a try pod book club with the listeners
Also getting a sponsor with fable sponsor for it if u want ebook access too
Books for Zach: Quick reads
Silverwing series - Kenneth Oppel
Rule of the bone - Russell Banks
Books for Raine :
The Giver Trilogy - Lois Lowrey
The Blue Helmet - William Bell
Started watching Dr Who (2005) a few months ago. It was so good. The weeping angles are so scary,,, need to rewatch those episodes
😂 i want Zach to read the underrated goth 90s twilight that is Vampire Kisses 😂😂😂
Captain Underpants was my gateway book. Also shoutout to Miles for reading the Dragon Ball manga, highly recommend 👌
This discussion about Kant is ideal.
So shoving the egg in the tube was Keith's idea huh?? I rewatched it and realize it now.
Love Rainies activity's are always awesome and bring out utter chaos from the guts. 😂😂.
Book club rec: Paris Hilton's memoir!! surprisingly fascinating.
tuesday’s with morrie one of THE BEST and MOST EMOTIONAL book experiences i’ve ever had. fantastic.
The Selection Series by Kierra CASS was my gateway drug into reading as a kid, and even though the reading level is lower it’s worked for both of my parents to get back into reading too. It’s a reread series for me!
I am so glad I have since learned to always watch on YT or patreon 😂 so many good visual shenanigans
25:52 Miles, the hero we all need.
NISSAN VERSA
The Atlanta ETM show was so fun! I have beef with miles though bc he scared the shit out of me when he jumped down the stairs when he came to the balcony
For easy reading books look for classic middle grade books that have stood the test of time. They usually cover deeper themes but are written much more accessibly. Great for children and tired adults.
Like Hatchet by Gary Paulsen or Judy blume books
Or for fantasy, look at tamora pierce or Garth Nix.
+++++10000000 for Doctor Who. Even if you start from the 2005 series even then its AMAZING
😂 Keith having a existential conundrum live, Miles being a g damn casual genius.
The balloon popping on the table has me CRYING 😭😂😂😂
I was in my car listening to people blowing up balloons, when Miles commented on it I laughed so hard 😂
Zach! Put Down Sapiens!
Now, The “Dark Olympus” series by Katee Roberts is my current guilty pleasure. Modern retelling of certain mythology couples. They’re definite page turners.
My girlfriend and I are soooo hype to see you guys in Buckhead tonight!!!
