What great fun; Afghans certainly do love running and rolling in the snow. It's fortunate that they have that much running room. Mine likes to make snow angels.
Beautiful dogs with a very loving disposition toward the owners that raise them but they don’t take to strangers very well. Good guardians but are hard to train. They are self- possessed and can be aloof at times. We loved ours totally but he hated our young daughter because he felt she took his place in our lives and would try to get at her in a harmful way. Sadly at 5 years old the vet said because Aladdin would never go to another master we had to put him to sleep. That has been almost 40 years ago but I still carry that in my heart.
I have had six over the years, and such a small price to pay to see such beauty every day. Four were rescues, and each dog had a quite different personality, which made them especially interesting as a breed.

My afghan LOVED the snow. I have a video posted here of him rolling in the snow after a romp with our Irish Wolfhound. I think he would have preferred another afghan to run with. :o)
I had Afghans some time ago and yes they can be trained and are not dumb. It just takes more time because of the independent hunters they are. They have to make decisions because they are ahead of the human hunter. So once you are able to show them there is a reason to do something, they will do it. I had a obedience degree on one of my Affies and was working on off lead training. She was doing really well, then life intervened. But yes you can train them. Work with them just 15 minutes a day. I took mine to Home Depot and Lowes. I would put my Afghan girl at one end of the doors and put her in a down stay. And then go to the other end. People would come and go with large hauls of lumber etc. This gave us both lots of confidence.
