I might a little late to the party but in case anyone wants to know, i put the ink tube from the marker in a small bowl or shot glass with a little alcohol enough to absorb the color and wait a bit. Squeeze out what is remaining in the tube into the bowl or shot glass. use a funnel to pour into the container or bottle. Then you can add alcohol to fill the bottle to the desired tint. :) hope that helps if anyone is interested. I'm a mixed media and art journalist so I use alcohol ink. You'll have fun with these ladies I promise 😁 You can use it to tint white polish or matte top coat for a stain glass look. 😊
You explained and showed clearly how to do this and size of bottles. Love the design you did also. I just love the effects of alcohol inks. I also tried water colour paints and you must try also because the colour is so vibrant. It has the same effect but it pops more. I was amazed. There’s actually a much easier way of doing this! If you stick the sharpie ink pad into the jar and leave it sit for an hour, covering the top of it with the sharpie tube to keep the alcohol from evaporating, a lot of the ink will draw down the tube into the alcohol itself without having to squeeze it, and you’ll get a much more pigmented alcohol ink that way as well 😊 I’ve learned from trial and error and I’ve found I actually reach more for the ones I made myself then my Apres inks, and I have the whole Apres collection all 5 sets with 6 inks each and I think they are a lot more difficult to blend with the solution they sell, isopropyl alcohol doesn’t move them and acetone makes them disappear completely, my DIY ones always turn out much better!

First, very stunning marble you designed. When you start did you put a primer and base coat then build the nail or just add ink colour straight on the Nail? Also with the brushes, do you use one for ink then another for adding alcohol? Or do you use one brush and wipe on paper towel as you go. I will try cause I love how marbling nails look. Thank you! If I was doing it on a client if your just using gel polish it would be priming, base, white then after these were cured alcohol ink. The brushes for adding ink are right in the bottles I mixed. I use a pointy brush for dispersing the ink once I’ve applied it with alcohol. I just keep wiping the brush off when I switch to a different color. If I was adding regular glitter I wouldn’t cure the top coat but the type of glitter flakes I used in the video I had to cure the top coat first for it to stick. Thanks for watching!
@NADA STANKOVIC Tips: alcohol inks show best over a white base and they apply better on a matte surface. I use matte top coat over my white gel polish, then cure it. Even if using a no-wipe matte top coat, I still remove any residue with alcohol after curing, then I apply the inks. You could instead buff to remove any shine on the white polish surface, then apply the inks without using a top coat. However, buffing can leave scratches that grab the ink and I find it quicker and easier to use the matte top coat.
Oh I really like how that nail turned out. A set of 9 alcohol inks in Australia is $56.00 dollars and the bottles are tiny. This is a much cheaper way. Thanks for sharing 🌸🐨🌸
Fyi if you haven't tried or didn't know , Michael's arts and craft carries a wide variety of alcohol inks, glitters even pigment now. Like around the scrapbooking and paint isles. I got a lot of "nail" stuff from there better quality, value and price than online. Just passing it along.
So, I do calligraphy and I like making my own pens. I have a guy that makes the pen holder for me (where you add the nib) and he can make it in white resin for me. So my question is. Would this alcohol ink work on resin? I imagine yes because that nail base is plastic like a resin. And then I could marble it and then add a coat or varnish. Even the gel for nails and cute it in the uv...
@Michelle Rivail Yes, it should work, but for best results, you will want a matte surface before applying the inks. You can buff, or you can apply some mattifying product. If you have gel polish and a lamp, then you could use a matte top coat as a base and cure it. After curing, wipe with alcohol to be sure the surface is clean, then apply the alcohol inks. You can seal it all in using a matte or shiny top coat, then cure. You may want to do a few layers, but you can always reapply more later, if needed. Of course, you could also use any product that says it will seal resin, but if you already own the gel polish supplies, that may be easier. Good luck, I'm sure it will be gorgeous!
Ink is an art medium and although traditionally in black or blue, it comes in an array of colors. Visit your local art store/shop to see the variety much like paint. In college, I opted for the traditional ink "well" [or fountain pen artwork], but today [for nail art] I use empty nail polish bottles with rubbing alcohol - shake and have fun with alcohol inks. Mix colors like you would with watercolors.
@R.d R.dee Yes, you can use it. Most rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol, but some is ethyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is what is commonly used for nails, but you'll be fine either way.
Sharpies are pretty expensive in the UK, I don't know about elsewhere. It would be cheaper and easier to buy some alcohol inks and dilute with alcohol as needed. I kinda wish I had a label maker, I had one as a kid for some reason and I loved it 😂

Could you do the same with food coloring? Also after you applied your alcohol ink to ur nail tip to make ur design what did you put on ur gel brush to blend the colors? Great idea to DIY and make ur own alcohol ink 🙂
Great video, very informative. Although I'm not sure how much money this DIY would actually save you, I mean, after buying the bottles, the ink felts, and the Alcohol, you'd probably be better off just buying the blooming ink for nails... but it was still great to see how you did it. Great video 👍
I know this is an older video and perhaps this suggestion has already been posted in the comments, but here I go! In order to save some money on your label tape, print out the color names all at once, adding about four space bar spaces between them. Type as many names as your printer will allow and print. Now, back-space several times to erase the names in the printing queue and continue the process again. Doing it this way will eliminate the need to cut off and discard so much blank tape, leaving more money to spend on nail products! 😉
@christ nathania You are likely using regular ink or some type with additives. You need an alcohol ink which is why she used the Sharpies. What you're seeing is the pigments precipitating (separating) once you add the alcohol because of a chemical reaction. If it was a pure alcohol ink, everything would dissolve. I'm not sure what you used, but you will need to try another ink. Just make sure it is an alcohol based ink in the marker and it will work.
I love DIY, but all these I have seen with different effects every one uses nail tips, not the real nail or even an acrylic on a real hand, the question is how much does it pool and stain the fingers, I’m just wondering, because if I know myself I will have a large mess on my fingernails.🤣🤣 if not my whole hand.

Its awesome but would it work with just clothing dye or food coloring maybe a few drops too

Next time you could just leave them standing the jar. They soak up alcohol and then it's easier to squeeze out all the ink.
