I am glad my GSP (8mo old now) decided to take me in. She is pretty good at making sure she gets me out for at least two miles a day. She is trying to do exactly what you said... Build on me some buff shoulders and hams and be able to see the outline of my ribs or at least find a rib. LOL My wife and her are hoping in 3 months I won't get as tired so quickly and will begin listening better. :-)

Stonnie, at some point would you comment on how training can be affected by sudden onset of a "fear period"? Overnight, my dad's 6-month GSD-Malinois pup is alarmed at everything and anything out of the ordinary -- a man in a kayak, a kid running through the water at the beach, etc. Alarmed at, and sounding the alarm, and running at whatever it might be. (Man was sitting in beached kayak, so to pup he appeared to be just a torso with a head. Thus, alarming.)

Do you exercise them to exhaustion? Do you go on adventures with them? Do you work.them daily?
I had a dal. 10.yrs old when I rescued her. She attacked me...and my other dal. I instinctively did the above...what Stonnie preaches btw. I'm no dog trainer. It took a year...but she became the sweetest, smartest pup ever.
Before me...she was given back to the rescues by two families. She was rescued from a parking lot...where she lived for ten years. Alone...zero interaction.
If she wanted to go on adventures with me...stonnie says big adventures...she had to learn to be a polite dog...regardless her age. I worked her daily to utter exhaustion...broke her down. This dog didn't even know what a food/water bowl was. She had never seen stairs...she was a stunning dalmatian...but vicious. Took three years total to turn her into a beach dog...it was worth the effort.
You love your pup...dont give up on him. Follow Stonnie's advice. If you live near Central FLA...i will help. But, I go on instinct. I'm not a trainer. Hang in there. Good luck.

Hey Stonnie, I watch almost all your training videos. I appreciate your political incorrectness that is hilarious. I'm in NE Texas in the Piney Woods in Cass County which has ZERO dog shelters. I have my own 5 year old male black lab, and a 2 year old black lab mix. She has some hound in her and doesn't retrieve, oh well. Great dogs around here. But, the biggest problem is people dumping their unwanted puppies and dogs out here on the county roads. We try to feed the ones who have just been dumped, they stare down the roads for their owners to come back, which is heartbreaking to watch, or they and jump in my truck. I just cannot do more right now. My best friend and I fostered and rehomed 17 of them last year. We paid the Vet bills, got them spayed and neutered, and took cute photos, etc. This year, we just cannot afford it, thanks to the new president and his policies. Anyway, so many good dogs and a change in attitude and education is much needed here in the South. Winter is the time of year with the most abandoned dogs out here in the boonies.
