Thank you David for all you do for the guitar player community. I really wish your channel to get more subscribers. Your videos are very much appreciated.
That's a really nice tribute, David. Great that you mentioned Guthrie, Shaun, Phil and some of the other great tutors... And thanks for mentioning the 100 Great Licks issue that I put together more than 20 years ago... I'd forgotten about that one! You have a great UA-cam channel. Best wishes from the UK! Cliff
Yes thank you Sir! For the record, my son (whom is 10 years old ) and I watch every episode, even if I don't " care" for band or want need info, the way you lay out all info is useful, well explained and appreciated. You've introduced both he and I to new/ new to me ( obviously him) bands and materials. Thank you thank you, happy Thanksgiving. We wish you the best ❤
All credit to Neville Marten - great great guitar player, editor and guiding mind behind the format and contributors to GT - he insisted on keeping the cd which came with the mag - despite managements attempt to remove it. I have all issues and cd's since before 1996. Can't understand why, when there's clearly a market they can't find sufficient ability in management to make it work.
I remember back in the day when Guitar Techniques and Total Guitar were the best place to find really accurate tabs. Now they're everywhere for free pretty much.
Thanks for sharing this with us. I don't think today there is that excitement anymore that we have certainly had in the 80's when waiting each month for a guitar magazine to arrive at your local paper shop. Mine was the Guitarist magazine each month but occasionally we would find an American magazine which may have had that floppy vinyl attached which could have been "Eugene's trick bag" or Living Colours "Cult of Personality" etc... It is sad to hear this new as it's and end of another era. Best wishes David from the UK. 🎶🎶🎶🎶😊😊😊😊
there is one good thing for a long time subscriber like myself, I can finally catch up with all the good stuff they produced over the years, I also own stacks of this mag and while I got rid of many old mags already, those GTs will stay with me till the end. Thank you for this lesson!
Thank you David ! We live in a whole new world. We've gone from analog kids to digital dudes in our lifetime. My story is the same as most of the cats that follow your channel. Apple boxes full of guitar magazines. It's been hard to let go of them. I've been giving them away to the folks who want them and to the music stores in my community. It was time to pass this treasure of knowledge and wisdom on to other players. I feel like all I've learned from these magazines has made me a better guitarist and musician. As Miles Davis once said take all the music theory and technique you've learned and forget it all and just play your ass off...😎👍🙏🤟🎼🎹🥁🎸
Hey Dave, I'm lucky enough to have every single issue, first I knew it was over was when tye last issue arrived. I'm absolutely gutted this mag has gone, sad, sad day. It definitely made me a better guitarist.
Loved this. For me, my first issue was in late 95 A to Z of great riffs. This introduced me a certain Mr Van Halen. I learned about so many guitar heroes from this and Total guitar for the lols.
Agreed. I used to refer to GT as being the equivalent to a University course - the content was top notch. Even today i still revisit some of the older mags if i need to work on something or a song. I was lucky enough to make acquaintance with Eric Roche via the magazine and he came to my house a few times. Very talented and a top bloke who is sadly missed.
GT nurtured many truly great players and exposed us to many forms of guitar expression. Alas, now it's another casualty of the digital information age where people only see what they search for. I have quite a collection of guitar magazines myself, all stored in air-tight boxes, but I haven't looked at them in years; not since I got into computers and discovered a new world of interactive teaching resources. Progress is always a double-edged sword.
Hey what's up man going to check the video out today. Last night I was at The Creed and 3 doors down concert that also had Mammoth on the Bill. Wolf was amazing, he definitely has the VH gift. Seeing him live was great. The crowd really liked him as well. Can't wait to check this lesson out. Peace ✌️🕊️ my brother
I’ve been buying and collecting these mags since way back in the early 90s still got 100s. I think my favourite was probably Total Guitar, always loved the CDs that came with these as well. Funnily enough I can actually remember many of those covers
Thank you for all you do in the guitar community and I just learned some stuff from the Steve Vai videos that I didn't know a guitar could do. Many thanks.
David, you are correct. This magazine is/was great. I think that Jeff Beck edition (1996?), was my first one. I've learned so much from that magazine. Great video! My current favorite is Guthrie's rendition of the keyboard/organ part of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground. This was the edition with RHCP on the cover.
I bought the 2nd copy of GT and continued collecting for a number of years . Was learning Since I’ve Been Loving You from the same October 1996 edition only the other day (p.88). I’m sure there was a Bernie Torme edition somewhere in that box Mr Brewster 😉
Thanks for acknowledging this. I’ve got a stack of magazines like yourself but also got some digital copies on my iPad. I 'completed my collection' for 30 quid or something a while back (goes back to 2009, I think). Annoyingly it’s not going to be supported going forward. I’ve downloaded them all now but there’ll be no way of preserving them going forward. Anyway - sad to see it go. Was always head and shoulders above the competition.
Friend who was studying in the UK at the time brought me the first two issues… kept buying them until well in the 2000s although the quality went down a bit over time. But the first years were amazing - they transcribed really obscure shred solos (“Loch Rannoch”, for example) and the only mag that could tip it is/was Young Guitar.
Although I hadn't bought Guitar Player for a while, I bought the final issue-I put it on my list to buy it--but of course, like many print magazines, it had become very slender. I think that it will remain as Web site, but it had been in print since the mid or late 60s. When I first started playing guitar, I got a lot of the magazines that had tabs of entire songs, but with experience, I started to prefer Guitar Player-instead of tabbing songs, it had columns that showed licks from songs, and explained why they work--much more helpful to developing a personal style. I also liked Guitar Player because instead of focusing on glam metal and shred guitar like many publications were doing, it covered all styles of guitar from folk and flamenco to blues and country and classic rock. I also have a few copies of Guitar Techniques, I know some place I have the one with Jeff Beck and a blue background, I have a few of the CDs here some place. Print magazines are just disappearing, the newsstands are not very full.
I couldn't wait for the next month to go down to my Barnes and Noble and get the next issue of Guitar Techniques and did so from 2011 till 2019 then they didn't have the cd rom with it anymore .
Ya when I first found these they couldn’t put them out fast enough 😂 I remember going to Barns& nobles or Border, and there was always some sort of lag time every month, I would get so mad because I might miss something !!!!! But like you guys I got boxes full of these along with all the others 😎 They were great sad to see them go ……
Only recently have i learned to alternate pick correctly after decades. Guitar world and metal method didnt mention how to select pick width or strict alternate picking, maybe they did and i wasnt ready? Theo Ziras i asked he told me how to hold the pick and Justin Hombach told me that with even number of picks on each string pick direction stays same and odd it changes, when changing strings. The dilemma of directional vs strict outside picking wasnt covered in magazines. Basically "whatever feels comfortable". Especially Metal Method, the most general worst.. Then again maybe it was just me and i didnt pay attention? Problem with stopping of publishing is if the internet goes is anything archived?
Will you please make more Leslie West stuff? Outside of Mississippi queen, there is nothing! Mean mistreater would be awesome! Thanks for all you do… ❤
Really gonna miss guitar techniques. Such a privilige to get lessons from monster players like Guthrie Govan and David Kilminster etc. Sad that everything is online these days.
Hey David, do you read? And what are your thoughts about reading music notation for guitarist? I am finishing up book 1 of the Mel Bay Guitar Method that I actually started way back when I first picked up the guitar and I am loving it...got 6 more to go, lol. Thanks bro.
Oh that sucks.. these mags were the ONLY way to get decent info back in yhe 90's ive got boxes of them under the house nothing compares to finding one back in the day with a song you always wanted to learn for me it was comfortably numb i still have that mag in my current pile lol so sad to hear they're stopping production.. bless ✨🙏🕊️
I saved years of guitar mags that came with cd's. Now, after 50 years of working, I have the time to start to go through all this stuff! Except now I have to worry about healthcare and social security....fungoo!

I think these magazines should start pressing thick books with old issues jammed in em.
That would be great 🎶🎶🎶🎶
I was subscribed for years and have all the magazines from then. I'd have to live 10 lifetimes to learn everything I want from these.

Thanks for this bit of nostalgia. Your love for guitar is infectious. Really appreciate your dedication to the guitar community. David from Belfast

WOW... RIP Borders books, RIP print mags.. thanks for keeping the spirit alive on your channel.
I used to love Phil Hilborne's "A - Z Of Great Riffs"
Nice little bite size lessons.

Nice tribute David! It is really sad. I am going back and looking at old issues of GT.

Dave Kilminster was my Favorite, but love all of them. I have a big collection of guitar techniques.
Great lesson as usual man. I appreciate your sincere passion and your approachable presentation

I have years of GT mags- love when they had actual songs back in the day

You are awesome dude, we change with the times, I guess. We feel loss, and heal together with music. Bought some shirts (they are Sweet!) Cheers!

What Borders did you go to route 18 north east Brunswick NJ your a Genius
Good stuff. Like the martino lesson
I have learned a lot from GT over the years as well as GP. I have been a GP sub since the mid 70s.
Well it's like Dylan said, times they are a changin'! It's tough to see, but cheers to you for paying homage to such an important legacy.🤘🎸✌️
Too bad. Guitar Techniques was my favorite.
I used to pay $15 for them, twice as much as for other mags, but it was well worth it.
Me too ..totally worth it
I miss using magazines. Such a bummer. Just something about flipping through and practicing.
Just a bummer.
UA-cam killed these magazines, plus the cost is expensive, and you can't trust the reviews. Sad, but it's time up for this format.
True, the world is going digital. I don't think I trust the reviews these days either. Sad indeed.

June 1997 issue was the best...Phil Hilbourne's A to Z of Great Riffs - Yngwie Malmsteen Part 1, what an issue!
I love GT. This realy sucks. Thank you for the posting this. Love your videos.
Yes, the UK guitar mags were high protein!
Will you please make more Leslie West stuff? Outside of Mississippi queen, there is nothing! Mean mistreater would be awesome! Thanks for all you do… ❤

Dang, I really liked "Guitar Techniques" (yes, from Borders or Barnes & Noble).

Don't forget David actually went to music College so I'll bet money he does read music, but more importantly he is a hard worker and has a great ear.
wow, another mag gone. thanks for sharing Dave.

I know ...me too
isn't guitar techniques on-line now? I think things have evolved now with online lessons at JTC guitar and Truefire.
Is this the symbol of an augmented chord ?; B+

After reading all the comments, all I can say is ..."Print is dead"
I think Guitar World will be the next magazine to shut down. It costs too much to produce them.

Maybe once a mounth your could share your tech😅
It's not great David. Saw another video on the subject that these three rags are owned by the same publisher.
