No, because we are in a hotel with to many people around to do a video, so I will post it Tomorrow night or Sunday when we get back to my grandmas house.
Now it's a good thing that I had a paper towel handy, because I'm drooling over my keyboard while I watch these fantastic crosses you got. They are all... wow! Does it even need any words? What a great haul! I wish it wasn't so expensive to buy from SVO to Europe, but the necessary permits cost way over 200 euros. SVO has the best catasetum hybrids ever. I love how you added the little pics of the parents. I love the ones with spots and fringes around the lip, and that orange one is fantastic, and the dark red ones too. They are all amazing! Hauls like this one make me want to move to the US, maybe to Florida. :) I laugh when I imagine myself applying for a green card and writing "catasetums" as the reason for it. :D
If only Finland was one of those places with lax shipping restrictions, I would try to mail you some divisons when they go dormant haha!! If you came to the US, we'd welcome you with open arms, who doesn't need a ray of sunshine like you around? :D
I met Carlos from SVO recently and finally bought my first Catasetum after 2-3 years of growing orchids. I hope I don't kill it/think it's dead during it's hibernation.
Carlos is SUCH a sweetie pie! I met him when I visited, it was great! Don't worry about the catasetums. I have thought a bulb was totally lifeless and yet it surprised me by putting out some new growth. They are resilient and strong. The biggest mistake people make is to water too soon. Unless the bulbs are totally shriveled, hold off water until the new growth has leafed out a bit. :)
He really is. He said he just built a greenhouse of his own. Or had one built. I can only imagine the things he'll fill it with. Out of curiousity, have you ever had a Catasetum still have all it's leaves and yet be completely and totally disinterested in taking any water? It's for a friend.
great order Astrid.here in UK and Europe in general its very difficult and very pricey to get Catasetinae orchids.I have got 9 crosses from SVO and they are amazing.two of them are already in spike.and one of these 2 in spike should open its flowers within 2-3 weeks I hope Happy growing!
thanks, definitely its worth while to check their crosses of Ctsm.Donna Wise 'Amber' with Ctsm.pileatum or fimbriarum. they are a big guys but they flower twice a year for me
No! I don't want any Catasetinae. They've let me down and seriously, when I give them another chance, I know I won't be able to stop (unless they all die again). What an I say? I loved this unboxing video, but it was tough for me. :D Really cute plants you got, thanks for sharing! :)
Unfortunately here in Europe is not so easy to get all of that variety in Catasitinae... but I'll look farward to see your plants in bloom! :) Thanks for sharing!
I bet you and your friends could pool to buy a flask? Then sell the extras! :) There are ways to do it. But I do agree, the US has it VERY good when it comes to catasetums!
I'm terrible with seedlings ahah I need to find someone who may take all the flask! ... I need to wait until the next interentional show... and I'll go hunting for Catasetinae from south american nurseries! ;)
You can find many orchids of Catasetum, in the site "bvorchids". Bela Vista Orchids is a nursery from the city of Assis, São Paulo, Brazil. They can post the orchids to you. Bye.
Thanks sharing such a wonderful video May i know at which age of a plant can start blooming ? My two catsm bulbs planted in March 2019 now they are with long leaves and some leaves browning and falling !! Does it goid matured enough to bloom this year ? Or a catsm take 2/3 years to grow at blooming stage ?
That's good to know! I have had a hard time with similar looking plants like the Nelly Isler, Miltoniopsis, and so on. I was worried this one would just up and die on me, too, haha!
Don't worry, this beautiful Plant will do just fine. I had a hard time with Nelly Isler and Miltoniopsis as well but the Sunset is one of the best Orchids i have.
Very nice Miltonia, And wow love your new Catasetum babies, They all look great, I wish we could get these babies here in the UK, there are a few but not many, might have to order some from Germany or France, You just made me incredibly Jealous, I only have 2, I do love the speed in which they develope, I have the uk fb project plant, Catasetum Charlesworthii x Ornithoides, and I have Catasetum Pileatum Pierre Couret X Pena, I can't wait to see them in bloom, If i don't kill them first, And advice you could give would gratefully accepted. Thanks Rosemary.
Just watch my channel, and check out Brittany - Holy City Orchids. She knows loads! You can also join the fb page for catasetums and get good help there. :)
Aww, what a nice unboxing, I am so jealous :) And I have a "Ten Dragons" cross, too, that hopefully will bloom this fall! It's Ctsm. incurvum x Ten Dragons 'Night Wasp'. And wow, this crosses sure will come out amazing when they bloom ... so looking forward to you showing them off this fall. I definitely want one or two Catasetinae more ... or three ...
I originally had a $500 wish list, and I had to cut it down drastically! I want all the catasetums!! :D I hope you get some more of these awesome guys.
***** I totally understand you, Catasetums are so rewarding - a nice variation when it comes to the other orchid slowpokes. Oh, by the way, my Wine Delight listened to you, it's growing beautifully - so looking forward to it's blooms. Are you planning a June Catasetum update?
Hmm, I am not sure. We will see what happens when my grow space is set up. Any day now.. I am chomping at the bit to get my supplies but I need the money to come first!
Hey Astrid, great orchid haul, I'm green with envy!! One quick question, do you repot to s/h immediately? Do the new roots that have already grown into the sphagnum moss adapt to the s/h or do they die off? Thanks, have a great weekend!
Hey there! So here is my thinking (maybe I should do a video). These catasetums have already put out their roots and are in VERY active growth. To repot them now would surely be detrimental and cause them great suffering. All my ctsm in semi-hydro were potted that way just as new growths were emerging. I cut off all the roots once the plants are totally dormant, and then I set the plant on top of the medium, and I know it will put roots down into the medium when it is ready. The ones who just arrived are already thriving in that moss, and I will only keep them in that moss for one year anyway. When they go dormant, I can chop off all the roots and wait for next spring, when I might pot them in semi-hydro. HOWEVER! This is my first year growing them. I want to see if my 10 plants in leca or my 10 plants in moss fare better. That will determine how I pot these types of orchid in the future. If it is equal, I might do semi-hydro, but if the moss is better, I will move them all back to moss next year.
Hi Astrid: About a two-thirds of the way through this video you showed your Fdk. After Dark SVO Black Pearl in semi-hydroponics, which was in beautiful condition. I recently purchased one about a week ago which is in definitely in its growing cycle and potted in bark medium. I noticed today that there is some type of sticky substance on the underside of the leaves, which tastes slightly sweet and a sort of bruising on the two biggest leaves. I've seen sap on phals and dendrobiums, mostly on the stems, but this is really strange. I'm afraid to do anything to it until I find out what this might be. If you need a photo, I can certainly send one to you. Thank you!!
That is just regular ol happy sap. It isn't harmful. My plants seem to have gotten a lot of it when I started watering them. I think they had some edema and their cells burst so they have some little oozing sap. That's what I think. All the undersides of my leaves are sticky now it is soo annoying. XD There's lots of it, too!
Any advice! I repotted my catasetum from dormancy, but they died, out of 8 got 3 still Okey. On the 3 left 2 didn't repot. One left from the group I repotted. I love to learn them my first time collections. And am willing to gamble. Please the way you water, repot and other thing that they love, that I didn't give it to them, school me Astrid!
Hey there. I pot my catasetums in late winter or early spring when they form a small new growth. I basically just sit them on top of the potting mix and stake them in place so they are not wobbly. I give no water until the new roots are longer than 3 inches total and/or the new growth is leafed out. Check out Holy City Orchids- she talks a lot about bringing ctsm out of dormancy!
Thanks for sharing. Lots and lots of catasetums, looking forward to their blooms. I recently like cycnoches species, do you happen to have one? are they easy?
I do not have any cycnoches. They can get absolutely HUGE though! MASSIVELY tall plants, I am not kidding!! They are beautiful, though. I don't particularly feel drawn to them, but I don't believe they'd be harder than another kind of catasetinae-type orchid. And boy oh boy are catasetums easy so far!
+Astrid do you know how many I killed / rotted? 4, still got one left, but i am not watering it untill it gets quite big. I look for C.winedelight and feredclarkia after dark , which you can't find in Europe.
Danny got the Cycnodes Wine Delight in Europe. Perhaps ask her where she obtained it? Fredclarkearas might be harder to find in Europe, though, that is true. You have to be almost evil with keeping water back from catasetums. Get them DRY and leave them alone, because they rot easily. However, I saw a guy rot the base of a bulb, and he cut it right in half (like along the short path, so the cut makes a circle, not an oval) and sealed it with cinnamon. He potted it and waited, and two of the eyes in that bulb made new growths! It was astounding! These guys are tough. Not all is lost when rot sets in - not necessarily at least!
That is the magic of Trader Joes. If you wish hard enough you will find it hahaha. Well kind of. I just got a Zygo that I had wanted for a while the other day at TJ.
OOhh so nice little plants!! Astrid I must say thanks to you I must definately try some Ctsm orchids, I hope I find some nice plant at my area some time.. :) Thanks for these amazing inspirations... :) I by the way I must say as well you look so good these times, do you tell us somthing about your new growing place? As I caught in some video you moved? :)
I did move! I finished university so I moved closer to where I will work, and I have a beautiful back porch that looks out into a wooded area. I love it!! Ctsm are fun and I enjoy them greatly!
Oh thats good for you, living near the work place and having nice environtment around you.. :) good luck there... It looks really different and nice on your vids.. :) In autumn I will plan some Ctsm... I really like the pale color ones, not much stripy or dotty... I found some really nice yellows and oranges.... :) I will see, thanks for the new video as well!!
I'm going ape over catasetums too. I just received an order from SVO, so I've been up and down their website. I didn't see any of these catasetums on the website...okay maybe I did see one, how did you know they had these varieties? How did you order? Also, will you repot these right away? I'm new to orchids, so wasn't sure if I should repot these right away. I purchased some other cats a couple months ago and repotted them, but they seem stalled now. They're not dying, but they're not growing as "fast" as other YT's catasetums. Most are about the size of your small ones, none are as big as your biggest from this haul. BTW, you are funny...your shmoov move in the beginning of this video cracked me up. Worth a thumbs up and a re-watch. lol
Hey there! You have to be subscribed to his email list to get access to new catasetums before the general public. Go to his website and subscribe!! I don't know when the list will be made public, but you should get a hold of it before the best ones get snapped up!! :) I will NOT repot these as they are in active growth. They need every bit of water and nutrition they can get, and I would really not want to harm their roots at all in this rapid growth period. I repot them when they are dormant. I cut all of the roots off and set them on a shelf until new growth emerges, then I stake the plant up and sit it on top of some potting medium and wait for roots to creep down into it! I have only grown these for about 7-8 months, so this is some non-expert advice, but I think it is grounded in good logic. Also, you shouldn't use "cats" to describe catasetums, or you may confuse people who think you mean "cattleya" I think yours aren't growing as fast because they are younger? I am not sure. Of course, Fred Clarke is the expert on these and he is very friendly about answering emails people send him with questions. Treat your plants well with light and nutrients and copious water and they should do well. :)
Thanks for the advice. I just subscribed to his mail list. Mr. Clarke is a very nice man. Hopefully I wont kill my catasetums (advice taken) so I won't have to reorder them when I order from my new ones. This new obsession, I mean hobby, is expensive. Please keep us abreast of your new catasetum collection and if you plan to use the semi-water culture on them.
No semi-water culture for me. I don't like it. Good luck with your new babies. Don't be afraid to really hold back water as they go dormant, they won't mind.
Do you have any videos on growing these types of orchids. They Look interesting I believe I have one I bought years ago, but it was labeled "nun Orchid" so I'm not sure.
This is my first year growing them, so I am trying not to advise people on how to grow them yet. I need some success behind me before I feel comfortable giving advice! Holy City Orchids has videos about these plants, and they were really informative to me. :)

This really makes me want to blow my budget on next month's plants. Did you get the free plants with your AOS membership or by the quantity you bought?
Fred sometimes throws in an extra plant with orders as a surprise. I have bought from him before ($100+ orders) and know him a bit, and his website didn't list the denticulatum so I asked him if he had them in stock. He said he did, but since they weren't on the list he would gift me one. Surprise, he gave me two! He's a generous guy and great to talk to if you have questions!
+Astrid Thanks. I think I'm going to blow out my budget next month for sure. I love me some minis and the fact that the denticulatum has both a miniature growth habit and lovely spots makes me want one. Maybe I'll see if he has any more next month with the second list.
You could probably email him about it if you want one that badly. When I saw the Clowesetum Pierre Couret I emailed him, "I've fallen in love with that plant and I must have it, do you have any left?" The tigrinum also seems small and is spotted, heh heh.
NOICE! :D Fred's going to be at my orchid society next month, so I'm itching to place an order but there are so many choices and I'm overwhelmed! I've been browsing SVO off and on for two weeks and I've barely made a dent. I've been looking for a catasetinae with pink flowers with no success, I know Rebecca Northen is pink but I only found the one cross with spitzii, which according to the first bloom pic and description makes a yellow flower- do you think it can bloom pink?
I doubt it will bloom pink, but you never know. Are you reading his descriptions closely? I think the tigrinum can be pink-ish. I wonder if the Clowesetum Pierre Couret "Flamingo Spots" x Catasetum Orchidglade "Davie Ranches" ( #6486 ) will be pink. I also wonder if # 6718 ( Fdk No Doubt "Summer Wine" x "Davie Ranches") would be pink.
ALSO! My "Jumbo World" bloomed pink, and it is supposed to be bright stinkin yellow. There is some surprising color variability in these so you never know!
***** I've been trying to read them closely- but there are so many of them! :p I don't find any Pierre Couret crosses on the website, where did you see it? I've put No Doubt x Davie Ranches on my list, the description does say they could be "rose" colored so I'll get one of them. I think I'll get a Rebecca Northen x spitzii too, if your Jumbo World bloomed pink maybe these can, and if not I still like the yellow.
Oh, his list isn't public yet! You could probably just email him asking for those crosses OR ask him to put you on the list and send you a link! It's good to be on his list! :D
Hi Astrid...I just watched your composite bonding video just before (ironically i had the exact same issue with my teeth and got the exact same procedure on the same teeth done!). How are you going with that? Any issues with the bondings?
Hey there! I actually had it taken off. I am kind of weird because I really don't like having things attached to me that aren't my body, so I reject them in some way or another. For example, I don't like wearing rings, necklaces, hair extensions, etc. For some reason, it makes me feel stressful, so I try to get rid of it. The dental composite made me feel weird because I knew I couldn't whiten my teeth at home anymore, and that bothered me a lot. I loved the straightness it gave my smile, but the fact that I couldn't get my teeth any whiter bugged me. They popped it off, filed it away, and I have my old tooth back. Easy! I don't regret having it done in any way!
Leca, hydroton, aliflor, clay pellets. It all means basically the same thing, and it is used for semi-hydroponic orchid growing, which I have videos about!
I don't know. What I understand is that many catasetums will make 3-4 flower spikes per season, so the flowers are a bit shorter-lived, but the plant makes many flowers. :) But I have only bloomed a few in my care - therefore I can't give a good general answer to your question.
Oh I wish our TJ would sell those miltonia. And watching your video is great but so dangerous. I want to get more of those catasetum. I don't have any more room!!!! Ugh!!!!!
I don't really have anything I want to trade. I'm attached to them all. Maybe someday. Are you going to the orchid auction next Tuesday? Hosted by Portland Orchid Society? You better.
Wonderful orchids you got there. Thanks for sharing and happy growing.
Thanks! And I can't wait for your Motes haul video, Caleb! Is it up?
No, because we are in a hotel with to many people around to do a video, so I will post it Tomorrow night or Sunday when we get back to my grandmas house.
Well I am looking forward to it! Have fun!

happy growing great orchids God bless you.
Gracias, Maria! God bless you, too.
Love your new alien-looking orchids.
They just float my boat!
Beautiful plants! Outstandingly beautiful Miltonia! I really like that one but never can decide if I should get it or not.
Of course get it! :D
Oh how I wish I had the space to keep a haul like that! Your new place must awesome! Love your updates. :)
Just add more shelves, bb.
Awesome Order Astrid The Ten Dragons X Ten Dragons wicked is a very big big plant and robust mine is in spike right now very good choice !
I thought it just looked so evil and vaginal. I HAD to have it.
vaginal is what drew you to it ? lol
No.
Evil AND vaginal.
like the emphasis on AND lol

The Clowesetum Pierre Couret "Flamingo Spots." That one cost me a lot of money but I HAD TO HAVE IT!!

I think it's beautiful in real life and in pictures!

I will NOT repot these as they are in active growth.
Also, you shouldn't use "cats" to describe catasetums, or you may confuse people who think you mean "cattleya"
I think yours aren't growing as fast because they are younger?
+Astrid I love a good unboxing! :D
At what period are the catasetum in dormancy in the USA (california) ? beginning of fall season ?
+Astrid love the Miltonia 'Sunset'
Me, too! I can't stop looking over at my beauty!
+Astrid :D

When I saw the Clowesetum Pierre Couret I emailed him, "I've fallen in love with that plant and I must have it, do you have any left?"
The tigrinum also seems small and is spotted, heh heh.
+Astrid You mean the summer catasetinae list he e-mailed? I have that. Is it on that list?
Ooh i love a good unboxing! :)
Makes me jealous though
Ah yes, it's a double-edged sword!
***** ill get my own tomorrow ;)
Well be sure to show it off!
Do Catasetums bloom at a young age? I didn't know that... Maybe I should get some more of them :D
I think so. I am not an expert on these. But once, someone showed me a ctsm blooming from the flask!!!! It was amazing!
Miltonia at trader joes? welp there goes my money ! I loveeeee loveeee trader joes orchids cheap and so well taken care of!
Yep. I have to be careful when I do there because I never know when an orchid will jump straight into my cart and demand that I buy it!
Yeah thats the good thing about bondings...you don't have to file your natural tooth down like Veneers! Thanks for your honesty! :)
Astrid, do you still like semi hydroponics for your catesedums?
I am going to do a video on that subject soon. Stay tuned! I need to put some thought into it because I am going to reflect on a year of growing.
i only have one orchid... and i think the lack of beauty is making me die slowly... 😂😖💀💀 Great haul!
what do you call that brown pebble like stone you use for potting your orchids?
Leca, hydroton, aliflor, clay pellets.
It all means basically the same thing, and it is used for semi-hydroponic orchid growing, which I have videos about!
Astrid how long to catasetum orchid blooms generally last?
I don't know. What I understand is that many catasetums will make 3-4 flower spikes per season, so the flowers are a bit shorter-lived, but the plant makes many flowers. :) But I have only bloomed a few in my care - therefore I can't give a good general answer to your question.
Thank you. I will try looking it up at AOS. Have a great day, Astrid.
I never tried catasetums or Fred Clark's website. Umm something to try summer.
Yessssss! Buy a plant or two. They will be satisfying!
+Astrid absolutely. Also guess what I'm getting? Its a mini
Tigrinum?? Clowesia??
+Astrid No, its a dockrillia/dendrobium
But which one is it?
Oh I wish our TJ would sell those miltonia. And watching your video is great but so dangerous. I want to get more of those catasetum. I don't have any more room!!!! Ugh!!!!!
Sell some of your "naughty" orchids that won't bloom for you! Make room for new, exciting plants!
What type of plant (with the white and pink leaves ) ???
That's a caladium. They don't like to dry out, hahaha
Any update
Glad to c ur doing well.! DM me🙂
Great haul. But so dangerous watching these orchid unboxing videos.
Can we do a trade???
Hell no! I wanna bloom ALL of these! :D
+Astrid not those!!! Just trade
I don't really have anything I want to trade. I'm attached to them all. Maybe someday. Are you going to the orchid auction next Tuesday? Hosted by Portland Orchid Society? You better.
+Astrid omg I forgot to tell you 😰 not moving yet. We are going to visit two months out of the year
Ohhhhh okay! Well, POS is waiting! :D
Yeaaay, first like first comment :D
Oops, looks like Archie beat you to it!
