What a wonderful tribute to a truly great GENIUS of choreography who has also enriched ballet repetoire magnificently! His reconstructions and his choreography will go down in history as classics, for example, his masterpiece The Pharaoh's Daughter. Thank you BunduBallerina for this fascinating compilation of extracts. It is evident from them that he expected much from his dancers in terms of mastery of difficult technique!

Within the DVD there is a wonderful series of interviews with Lacotte and the principal dancers. Most insightful. Perhaps you can obtain a copy of the DVD and share with the world the interviews. They are so insightful as well as historic.

I have seen all of these except for the Milkmaid, the Red & the Black, and the Papillon ones. It is lovely to see these old ballets kept alive. I am grateful for the work of Pierre Lacotte; he honored the style of these works while keeping up a good amount of fireworks and spectacle for the modern audience. I think Pharoah's Daughter and Marco Spada were especially successful; but I also liked the La Source solo for Franz in Coppelia. Paquita, Ondine, La Vivandiere, and the Schneitzhoeffer Sylphide were also well worth while. This stuff is the history of ballet; but it is also nice to expand the classic repertoire beyond just the familiar gems you always see. I'd like to see Stone Flower, Talisman, Awakening of Flora, Prince of the Pagodas, The Seasons, Sylvia, La Source, done more often.

As a lover of romantic ballet, I'm so thankful for Pierre Lacotte reconstructing these gems of ballet - especially La Fille du Pharaon (it had been the most popular ballet in Russia in the late 19th century). I just wish that there would be a full recording for Le Papillon; the pas de deux with Offenbach's music is so beautiful and I wish there would be a full version. I've also read that Lacotte reconstruct other ballets, such like La Fille du Danube, but I don't find anything as footage...)

Thank you so much for this vivid tribute. The "Pas de deux des écossais" (scottish pas de deux) in la Sylphide is also one of my favorite dance piece. Young Ganio remains wonderfull. "Old" Nureyev vas awful but the historic testimony of his dedication and burning passion for the stage is precious, and he had such a strong relation with Lacotte.... I waited for a long time a new ballet for Paris opera, and it was ... Le Rouge et le Noir (a book I love). So disappointing (except some short variations like the one you picked, a beautiful pas de deux...), such a beautiful stage and costumes for a too long, too heavy and globaly poor choregraphy (confirmed by all these marvellous ballets you show here). I hoped that he could fine tuned it but alas, no... But was a mastering of technique, grace, musicality and spirit of classical ballet... Thank you Mr Lacotte.

Such a poor choice to select that video of Nureyev for this wonderful tribute to Lacotte. If it was filmed in NYC, I saw it in person and was aware that he was already very ill . He danced dreadfully, and should have known better, by then. He never did have the stunning technique of Barishnicov or other male dancers. He was the first male dancer to leave Russia, he was gorgeous , he had mystic and Fonteyn and great PR....but he was on the stage when he no longer should have been.

I think the choice is based on the fact that Pierre Lacotte choreographed Marco Spada for Nureyev. It is historically of interest and it does, however, show that Nureyev danced on stage for too long.
