Everyone's already gone into it in the comments, but Rocky not winning really helps the realism of the movie. Even if Apollo didn't train seriously, he was still the undefeated heavyweight champion who had never even been knocked down before. He was inevitably going to win against someone like Rocky who was struggling to beat amateurs just a few months ago. Any other fighter, especially at Rocky's skill level, would have been knocked out in the first few rounds. But with Rocky's hard work, determination, support from Adrian, and a superhuman ability to take 1000 punches to the face without getting knocked out, he was able to go 15 full rounds. He did what nobody else did before him. Rocky won in his own way without it being too farfetched.
For Rocky it wasn't about winning but going the distance, a great message for life really. As well as just caring only about Adrian by the end, still chokes me up haha. Perfect movie.
Mick is usually misunderstood. People think he is trying to take advantage of the situation because he is not a good guy. He really respects the "Sweet Science". He was against Rocky first because Rocky was wasting his talent and not respecting the sport. He was really serious in his desire to protect this chance Rocky had.
That's what makes this movie shine... there's no two-dimensional characters. They are all fleshed out, flaws and all. Every single character is portrayed as a real person.
Most people don't know this but...Burt Young who plays Paulie was actually a much better boxer than Sylvester Stalone. Burt Young accumulated a military boxing record of 32-2 while in the Marines. He then turned pro under the name Burt ‘Paulie’ Young and went 17-0 under the legendary boxing trainer Cus D’Amato (trainer of Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson, and Jose Torres). He was also a sparring partner for 5-time Canadian Heavyweight champion and two-time Heavyweight World Title challenger George Chuvalo.
Rocky runs up the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. People come from all over to run up those steps and throw their hands in the air triumphantly.
As I got older I saw Pauli as a highly depressed man who was deeply hurting and the 70s were economically very hard. A decent life was passing so many people by, leaving them scrapping a life together.
First movie I ever saw in a theater and great final scene. Like at the end of a real fight filled with hype. A lot of noise, confusion, reporters, photographers, trainers, people jumping in the ring who got no business being there, two fighters who are either blind or can barely stand up. Brilliant filmmaking.
I saw this movie when it was released and at the end the whole theater gave a standing ovation. And this was in a tiny little college town in Western Pennsylvania! This was a huge hit for that summer and launched Stallone's career into the stratosphere.
I live here in Philadelphia where almost all of the Rocky movies were filmed, and I have run up and down those steps at the Philadelphia Museum Of Art many, many times.
Omg, what a great reaction! You caught all the nuances of the story, and noticed what you needed to notice to really get this film. I can't wait to watch you continue your journey with Rocky. Please do Rocky II soon! I grew up in the 70s in Philadelphia and have seen this movie well over a hundred times. I am so pleased that you liked it. It was always very important to me. Rocky was always a legit hero to us youngsters back then.
Rocky II is on its way my friend, but there are two other films ahead of it in the schedule - namely Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Rambo: First Blood part II. Her Rocky II reaction is startlingly powerful. - the editor
I think that Rocky not winning the fight is what makes this a truly great movie, the underdog is the underdog for a reason, but he had his personal victory by accomplishing his goal of going the distance.
This movie was a huge surprise because Sylvester Stallone had done nothing other than a couple of character roles. He wrote the movie and shopped it around under the condition he would get to play the lead. It was a smash hit . It won theOscar for Best Picture. Stallone, Shire, Burgess Meredith and Burt Young were all nominated for Oscars. It was a real life underdog movie about an underdog.
Oh, Rocky did win! He got a huge payday (won't have to work as a "leg breaker " anymore), he won the vital of his dreams and he won everybody's respect. Those people who were calling him a bum at the beginning will think of him as a great fighter, now. And most importantly, his loss set the stage for half a century of sequels!!!
Good one, Verdy! These are a special set of movies. #6 is my personal fav, but they are all enjoyable. Thanks for sharing this one. I enjoyed rewatching it with you.
I liked your reactions, especially to the scene when Mick came to visit Rocky at his apt when he accepted the fight. IMO the best scene of the movie. Ery moving….gets me every time. This scene was actually Sylvester dealing with some pent up emotions he had with his real life father. Makes it more poignant. It’s a great movie. Glad you enjoyed it.
Paulie does redeem himself to a degree in the later movies. The actor who plays him (I forget his name at the moment) is nothing like him, a good guy who is an artist in his free time and actually used to box in his younger days.
In the film, Gazzo was not loaning Rocky money for training but giving him an outright gift. He was looking after him as would an older brother. In real life the actor who played Gazzo, Joe Spinell, was a close friend of Stallone and treated him in the same way giving and lending money to Stallone when he was broke as a struggling actor. He was also godfather to two of Stallone's children. Spinell played Willi Cicci in Godfather I and II and also the character Lt. Spinell in the 1980 film "The Ninth Configuration", the theological and philosophical sequel by William Peter Blatty to his 1973 film "The Exorcist". It has a story arc from a minor character from the first work but has nothing to do with exorcisms.
@@jasonward1470Gazzo was cool 😎 how he kept the peace between Rocky and the driver and gave Rocky money But I would have to give the award to Mick. Many other actors could have played the loan shark role of Gazzo but that little man Mick and that scratchy voice was iconic
Great reaction Verdy! A split decision is where 2 out of 3 judges scoring the fight - thought Apollo won. Or you can look at it as Rocky lost by a split decision. ALL the Rocky movies are good. Some better than others, but all good! God bless you!
This is the first time I've seen your channel. I really appreciate the thoughtful reaction. You've got a new subscriber. I look forward to watching more.
i met my wife on the ice rink, in 1982 in the UK, disco night, i was great skater, she was not so good, back in those days, for the girl to be skating with a great skater, was a good look, we had 3 wonderful girls, those were the days
I first saw this movie in the late 90s as a little kid with my father, which my mother wasn't happy about 😂 Rewatching it now, it obviously goes way deeper than just showing action or violence. These kinds of hidden thoughts or messages often even in action movies are something I really like about older films 🎓
I saw this on the big screen when it first came out. I was about fifteen and it was amazing. I remember the buzz spreading and everyone talking about it. Great story that still resonates as shown by your enjoyable reaction.
This is my introduction to your channel. You are very enjoyable to watch---very attentive and thoughtful, I love seeing young women watch Rocky, and seeing how surprised they are at how great the movie is as it progresses. It's more of a love story than a boxing story, and with great characters. Keep doing what you're doing, you are a pleasure to watch. You're a natural at reacting, I can't wait to see more of your episodes.
Wonderful reaction ❤️ So looking forward to the next! I like the ending. Even we want Rocky to win and just barely doesn't andcthats by a decision so it's much more realistic than is typical for an American film which usually has the hero win.
The thing about Gazzo, people come to him to borrow money from him. He lends them money, but they have to pay high interest. These are people who are usually desperate for money, so when it comes time to pay, they may not always have the money to pay, especially with the high interest, but notice Gazzo didn't force them to take his loan, they came to him and promised to pay plus the interest. When Gazzo gave Rocky the 500, there were no strings attached. He didn't say here's a loan at such and such an interest rate. He did it cause he likes Rocky and he wants to help him out.
I like your reactions, very smart and intuitive. Especially for a girl so young. People will comment about his dog, and about how he wouldn't sell this script even though he was dead broke because he insisted on playing the lead. The best facts about this movie.
When I was in college I was part of the Navy training unit, and we had a physical fitness exam that ended with a three mile run. We ran a course through the park that ended with a hill beside a local high school. I was never a great runner, so during my first test when I got to that hill I thought I was going to die. But the high school marching band was practicing and just as I started up the hill they started playing the "Gonna Fly Now" theme from Rocky. I was never so motivated to finish that run as strong as possible.

This is a rags to riches story about a boxer Rocky Balboa. Rooting for the underdog. The American dream of making it big. And in a classic case of life imitating art, so is the story of Sylvester Stallone, who was a poor down on his luck actor before this movie made him a star. The movie itself won the Academy award for best picture beating out some really good movies that same year.
Great reaction Verdy! I liked watching your facial expressions during the championship fight as well. And even though Rocky lost the match to a split decision he actually won in life. He fell in love with Adrian and went the distance with Apollo Creed. I still love watching this movie, it never gets old for me, it brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for a fun reaction and I'm looking forward to your next flick show! 🎥🍿😊
Great reaction, VERDY. Although this one was before my time, I LOVE it. And the thing to remember about this movie is that it was made on a very low budget and shot in only 28 days of filming. Sylvester Stallone was an unknown, but he wrote the script, and somehow not just convinced a studio to finance it, but he also convinced them to let him play a role in the movie (not just any role...the TITLE role). Anyway, the end result garnered multiple Oscar nominations and ended up winning the Oscar for Best Picture. Btw, this was also the movie that created the 'Workout montage' with the music in movies. Before this movie, filmmakers didn't see it necessary to show the athletes working out in different inter-cutting scenes, since they thought it would bore the audience...lol. But Stallone changed all of that making sure that there was an inspirational workout montage in the movie, the very first of its kind. Now pretty much every movie in this genre uses a similar workout-with-music montage.
Burt Young the actor playing Paulie was a real boxer, he was a boxer while serving in the Marines and held a record of 32 and 2 and went on to win 12 professional fights.
Great reaction Verdy! So glad you enjoyed it. Now its time to venture into Rocky 2. We're all looking forward to your next adventure.. Thanks for sharing.
Great reaction to a great movie, Verdy. Very insightful. The reporter that talked to Rocky was our own Diana Lewis from Detroit. She was a reporter on local channel 7.
Sorry to be the mythbuster here but that isn't actually true. The Steadicam was first used for a film called Bound For Glory the same year. Following that it was used in Marathon Man before it was used to film scenes for Rocky. Rocky is often cited as the first use of a Steadicam since it was more prominently used - particularly to add dynamic shots to the training montage scene.
Paulie was a typical older brother that was born in the 1930s. While his methods are cruel today, he actually did her a favor by helping toughening her up and, together with Rocky, start bringing her out of her shell and away from ultra-shyness, which is what she wanted to do but was afraid. Paulie has his moments in this series.
Apollo won on points. That was Apollo's victory. Rocky had two victories: He went the distance with Apollo thus proving he was no ordinary boxer, and his other victory was he won Adrians love. In a way this is a love movie, not a boxing movie.
7:50 Mostly it looks so abandoned because they just didn't have the money for background extras. That's why the ice-skating rink is closed for their first date. In the original script it was open for business. But most agree it worked out better this way, with Rocky having to pay by the minute for his date with Adrienne. Art through adversity. The lack of extras is also why they're kind of limited about the angles they can show during the fight scene. They had nowhere near enough people to fill the stands, so they just kind of had everybody crowded up close to the ring on one side and kept it as dark as possible out in the distance. Note: This was never an issue again for _any_ of the sequels.
Fun Facts: Star Wars and Rocky were released into theaters 6 months apart. Star Wars changed special effects and legitimizing the sci fi genre as legit. Rocky the steady cam was invented for. Before cameras were big and had to be mounted on a vehicle or a rail system. This is why we get the iconic stair run and intimacy of the fight.
I agree with everything you said, except... The Steadicam was used in two other films before it was used in Rocky - Bound for Glory and Marathon Man. It wasn't actually invented for Rocky. Rocky is often cited as the first use of a Steadicam, probably because they used it more prominently than the films before. So it's a common misconception.
Fun fact.. When Sly eventually sold the scipt to Universal they wanted a big name star for the role. He held out and almost lost the deal because he wanted to play the character of Rocky. My script, he said, if you want it then you have to include me. The rest is history....
Kool Reaction to this Classic..... These are my Standard Comments, So some might have been mentioned.... The "Rocky" Movies are movies about Relationships and Personal Growth, with a little Boxing thrown in...... Butkis was actually his dog, he had sold the dog before the movie beacuse he was broke, and bought it back when he got the movie deal....... The scene where Rocky points out the shorts are the wrong color, was added cause the printer messed up the poster/prop and they didn't have enough money left in the budget to correct it, Same thing with Rocky's robe being the wrong size..... So they wrote in dialogue to address it..... The Creed Movies happen after the Rocky Movies, the Creed Character is Apollo's Son......
If somehow you ever saw the old Batman tv show from the 60's, Mickey played the penguin in that. LOL. I remember when I saw this with my buddies in the movies we were all laughing at that. Apollo is acting like Muhammad Ali. The actor just died a few months ago. A round is 3 minutes. Apollo is saying "I" talian like that because he is sort of being wise guy. It's A very small insult. Something you would say to a friend to tease him. Like calling someone with glasses four eyes. "He's running in Converse." In 1976, they were the best running shoes. LOL. I mean literally, them and Pro Keds were the top of the line sneakers. If you liked this you need to watch at least the first 3 or 4 Rocky movies. They are all pretty good but the first 3 or 4 are the best in my opinion. There are a lot of Rocky movies.
There was a live crowd there...there was a fight card and they gave everyone a 10 dollar KFC coupon to stay for the filming...this is referenced in a line from Rocky 2

Yes. I knew that when I first saw that in the theater in 1976. Gazzo is a good guy to the people he considers family.

Paradise Alley: Stallone's best movie for me.
He just wanted to go the distance. He said it himself. "Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed before."
Rocky lost the fight but won love :) Nice reaction, I enjoyed it.
Paulie is a nice guy, he's just very rough and prickly.
If it wasn't for Paulie, Adrian and Rocky would not have gone out and become a couple.
Now 2 !!! 🙂
Yup. That's coming for sure.
They said Sylvester Stallone ran a lot faster than they could imagine. They couldn't believe how fast he was when he took off sprinting.
Gonna love apollo and the whole rocky series. Including 5. Lol
The shots following Rocky up the Art Museum steps was the first use of SteadyCam invented and operated by a Philadelphia filmmaker Garret Brown.
Not my interpretation of Paulie, but an interesting one I haven't heard before.
Apollo won on points. That was Apollo's victory. Rocky had two victories: He went the distance with Apollo thus proving he was no ordinary boxer, and his other victory was he won Adrians love. In a way this is a love movie, not a boxing movie.
The point system hadn't been developed yet. Apollo won the most rounds on a split decision.
Note: This was never an issue again for _any_ of the sequels.
even Rocky had a montage!
Our entire high school basketball team wore high top converse shoes in the early 1980s. Boy did they suck.
OMG I SAW THIS WHEN IT CAME OUT I LOVE ROCKY LOL IM 61 I LOVE PAULIE TOO// IM SHY TOO// PURE PROTIEN!!!!
My favorite series!! Love the reaction. Thanks for sharing this 😊
See, now you just need to see the next one. They all go together.
Love your point of view!! :)
Eye of the Tiger by Survivor will come in Rocky 3. They'll do another song in Rocky 4 ( Burning Heart )
Thank you for your reaction!
??? What line from Rocky II do you refer to there my friend?
Where he chases the chicken and what kind of idiot does he feel like? I don't want to spoil anything for her
And speaking of spoilers..I have said since I was little that the official Rocky 2 trailer is the most spoiler trailer ever in history!! If you've seen the movie..check it out and you will roll your eyes..I think spoilers came into our language from this trailer
@@phinfankr Haha. She's seen it mate. I'm editing her Rocky II reaction now. That's a curious origin for that line I've never heard.
@@phinfankr I just checked out the trailer. Thank God I was born too late to see that trailer before I saw what would become my favourite Rocky film. That really would have pi***d me off. I can't think of a beat in the plot that isn't in the trailer.
Loved watching your reaction to this movie! You should definitely check out Rocky II.
Yo Verdy, there was a statue Rocky at the top of those steps with him in his victory pose.
Back in 1976, Converse was the ONLY athletic shoe. I wore high tops in basketball from 1978 to 1983. They were good shoes.
Besides that the real important things are shoe insoles, cofortable shoes with flat base are best 4 almost everything
RIP Carl Weathers and actual boxing champ (U.S Maines 32-2) Burt Young.
1 round is 3 mins in Professional Boxing
