Excellent demonstration of this radio. Very much enjoyed it. It is easy to get negative on this radio and the PL-990x for that matter with a lot of focus on the sync. Makes me wonder if they would get more praise if they just left the sync feature off the radio. However while I have liked sync on the Sony radio I had I actually prefer the multiple bandwidths DSP gives you over sync if I had a choice. So I almost never use my sync on my PL-990x. While fidelity on SSB on these radios is not as pleasant as SSB on a good analog PLL radio I find that the PL-990x is very sensitive on SSB and has very good intelligibility. Just not zen like listening experience like I can get on m Grundig 750 on some signals. However as a whole the PL-990x is just a wonderful radio to operate and listen to and the Bluetooth capability for listening to podcasts is just terrific on a radio with zen like sound. The H-501 is certainly a wonderful radio as well. We should be thankful that Tecsun released these radios. Looking forward to more videos from you on the H-501. I am temped to get it anyway even though the PL-990x would probably still be my favorite radio. I do like the large buttons of the H-501. How much better would you say the sound quality is of the H-501 compared to the PL-990x?
The SYNC on the PL-660 is the best you'll find on a radio you can buy today, but going one step further and using SSB on the 660/680 improves selectivity even further than DSP filters and great for fading signals, USING USB/LSB on a SW station really helps a lot better than filters when conditions get tough and because the DSP radios sound so bad on DSP ( not just tecsun ) it makes using SSB on SW Stations impossible to listen to, only the 660 and 680 sound so good in SSB especially the PL-680. If someone is seriously into pulling out the DX on a crowded band or wants to tackle fading then save a tonne and buy the PL-680 and spend the rest on a good antenna like the Bonito MA305 and mount it outside and ground the coax, you will have a seriously good radio setup that's extremely hard to beat at the cost.
Thanks for the demonstration of some of the shortwave performance aspects of the H-501. I respect your experience and expertise. Are you planning to provide a full review, or at least a detailed overall assessment of the receiver?
Helpful vid, thanks. I wish Tecsun's radios had 'slewing' or 'tuning up down' buttons also, but at least the tuning wheels on the H 501x have that rubber trim so you can spin the dial. Their PL-330 has a tuning wheel with no easy continuous grip and heavy detents; it's a "tuning wheel" that functions like slewing buttons, kind of the worst of both worlds.
At first I was bummed hearing about this radio as I a few mo.ago got the 990x.After seeing this vid I think I will stick with the 990x. The dials on the 990 are easy and fast to use ,and the sync appears to be no better on the 501 .my single speaker works good all in a smaller package. Good vid thanks.
Radio picked up a lot of stations. Where are you located approximately? What time of day? I assume you only used built-in telescopic antenna during the whole demo.
How does the sync detector compare to the PL-330? This appears to be a worthy successor to the venerable Zenith Tranoceanic, the Grundig Sateillit and Sony ICF 2010 “Porta-tops” but at an affordable price.
7:45 you answered my question. Guess I’ll go PL-330. Sad to see they have not fixed it! Unless it has much greater sensitivity than the PL-330, I see no reason to choose it.
@@joshuagardner894 Your right. I have an older Hamarlund receiver that offers BW all the way up to 16KHz. The ICOM IC-7300 has a variable I.F. that offers beautiful AM audio.
Dan - Why did you not allow comments on the Belka/330 test? Wondering if you notice a change between the low pass filter selection on the DX? I don't hear it. The DX needs more highs to my old ears. Thanx for the vid. No SOFT MUTE! Wish they would offer that option on the PL330.
SSB sounds so bad on Tecsun DSP why would they not just stick with analogue ? what's the point of DSP when the audio on SSB is so bad ? sure tighter filters are good but if it comes at the expense of audio quality then what's the point ? I have the PL-680, amazing audio, S2000 I sold for PL880, what a mistake, but I now have the 990x, yes, I did not learn my lesson, do not buy dsp portables but I had to try it. Now I will buy another S2000! never again DSP, I need SSB to sound good!
Is this intended as a "proper review" - or is this someone who is simply showing the features he uses? The title is "Tecsun H-501x Video", not "Tecsun H-501x REVIEW". If I'm looking at pickup trucks ... and searching UA-cam, I probably have to find more than one "video" to see everything that I am interested in. Not everyone tows an 18,000 lb Fifth Wheel like I do so I might have to watch multiple videos to see ALL of the features that I am interested in like interior, torque, towing, technological amenities, etc. Let us appreciate this video for what it is - not condemn it for what it isn't. It is an excellent video demonstration of "most" of the features - and if you do listen to ham comms & use SSB, I would bet that you would still utilize all of the features shown here as well.

Hi Dan, thank you for this. The H501x is quite an impressive radio and yes, there is quite a resemblance to the Satellit 500! 73s and GDX

Wow, do you live right by the ocean or something?! I wish I could get so many good signals like that!!!
Great video, I love it!!! I can’t wait to get home from my physical rehab and get to start using the one waiting for me at home!!! :0)

Hi Tom. Early in the video, he approximated 19:35 UTC, in eastern US.

I want to stay below $500.00 for a portable, what's your recommendation ?
Thanks Dan. Great stuff.
Is the tuning and volume strangely indented like on the PL-330?

What's this radio like on MW?
Thanks for the demo. Hope to have one soon. Thumbs up.
Does the fine tuning have a center point?
Hey Dan - from where did you get the H501?
how is he in sw
Do any of the portables with selectable bandwidth offer a BW greater than 6KHz ?
The 880 offers 9, but, is missing 6. In my view, 9 is too high without offering 6 as an option.

a proper review of $400 SW receiver should include SSB on Ham bands
